In this in-depth exploration of the relationship between Puritans in England and New England, Francis J. Bremer challenges the view that the colonists turned away from English Puritans in the 1640s. Rather, he convincingly demonstrates that the two communities retained a complex, symbiotic connection - a communion - throughout the seventeenth century, and that the clergy on both sides of the Atlantic saw themselves as closely linked in their spiritual mission. Focusing on the interaction between social experience and the shaping of belief, Bremer thoroughly analyzes how Puritan clergymen of a congregational persuasion came together in a godly communion and examines how that communion sustained them in times of trouble and physical dispersal. He explains the social forces that led to the articulation of early Congregationalism and details the significance of trans-Atlantic religious exchanges through correspondence, associations, publications, and other devices. Bremer traces the first-generation Puritans from their formative years at Cambridge University through the creation of a network of clerical friendships, through the flight to Holland and to New England, to the death of Oliver Cromwell and the beginnings of division within Congregationalism. This thought-provoking volume makes a solid contribution to Puritan studies and offers a basis for further discussions of the trans-Atlantic aspects of the Congregational community.

It was founded by English migrants in the United States during the year 1870 - initially as a self-defence league - to protect Englishmen and their families from the murderous outrages of an Irish criminal gang known as the Molly Maguires. The order was later credited with having helped defeat the terrorist band, after which it quickly expanded, establishing a network of lodges amongst the English diaspora throughout North America. The brotherhood soon turned into a cultural organisation, with the object of celebrating and preserving the Anglo-Protestant identity of its members. It also became a benevolent society, with an insurance programme for the benefit and welfare of its members and their families. At its peak it boasted more than 500 lodges, and around 45,000 members, which included not only thousands of working men, but city mayors, councillors, police chiefs, newspaper editors, state senators, British consular and embassy staff, and also members of Britain's secret intelligence agencies. Throughout the one-hundred year history of this mysterious order, its members have involved themselves in numerous - sometimes clandestine - activities, with a view to strengthen the ties of friendship between Great Britain and the Untied States. Some have accused the society of being part of a broader political conspiracy, which ultimately led to the United States entering both World Wars on the side of the British. This fascinating expos� brings to light the activities of this secretive society, and explores the impact that its members have had on Anglo-American bilateral diplomacy, and consequently, global geopolitical events. In the modern-age, many English people feel they have lost their national identity and culture. This book shows that in the recent-past, the English had very strong sense of their own unique Anglo-Protestant identity. Englishmen who migrated to the United States formed the Sons of St. George as a means to celebrate and preserve this national-identity.

The bitter dispute between ethnic groups in the US from 1914–17—a period of time characterized as the “culture wars”—laid the groundwork both for US intervention in the European balance of power in 1917 and for the creation of what would eventually become a lasting Anglo-American alliance. Specifically, the vigorous assault on English “civilization” launched by two large ethnic groups in America (the Irish-Americans and the German-Americans) had the unintended effect of causing America’s demographic majority at the time (the English-descended Americans) to regard the prospect of an Anglo-American alliance in an entirely new manner. The author contemplates why the Anglo-American “great rapprochement” of 1898 failed to generate the desired “Anglo-Saxon” alliance in Britain, and in so doing features theoretically informed inquiries into debates surrounding both the origins of the war in 1914 and the origins of the American intervention decision nearly three years later.

Showing the fundamentally transatlantic nature of this discourse from 1850 to 1920, the authors gather a wide variety of literary sources that crossed national and colonial borders within the Anglo-American range of influence. Through manifestos, fundraising tracts, novels, letters, and pamphlets, they piece together the intellectual world where philanthropists reasoned through their efforts and redefined the public sector.
