Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Excerpts American Angler's Book, the foremost fishing reference book of its time • Info on native fishes of North America • Technical expertise on tackle Norris on Trout Fishing samples both the expertise and the generous warmth that made Thaddeus Norris (1811-1877) such a beloved figure in American angling. From his wise portrayal of the many types of anglers, to the biology and behavior of native American brook trout, to his touching portrait of the now-extinct Michigan grayling, Norris set a standard for American angling thought that educated and inspired succeeding generations and still offers us both provocation and wisdom today. His concluding essay on the joys of fly fishing alone is regarded as a primary milestone of angling philosophy that set the tone for the philosophical explorations of many later writers from Arnold Gingrich to Ernest Schwiebert to John Gierach.

Book Fishing Lessons

Download or read book Fishing Lessons written by Paul Quinnett and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With honesty, wit and erudition, the acclaimed author of Pavlov’s Trout delves into the philosophical lessons learned from a lifetime of fishing. Despite its title, Fishing Lessons will not show readers how to fish. In fact, you don't even have to like to fish to enjoy and appreciate the latest book from renowned psychologist, fisherman, and essayist Paul Quinnett. Fishing Lessons is a rich mix of anecdotes, observations, essays, short stories, one-liners, and personal revelations from Quinnett's rich life and fishing journals. In his straightforward style, Quinnett rounds out the trilogy that began with Pavlov's Trout and Darwin's Bass, the first books ever written on the psychology of fishing. This time he tackles the philosophy of fishing—a philosophy of enjoying life. Over the course of its pages, Fishing Lessons provides satisfying essays that won't so much teach you about fishing as they will teach you about yourself.

Book Angling for Insight

Download or read book Angling for Insight written by Jennifer Heibult Sawchuk and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ever-growing body of literature highlights the importance of understanding user groups and stakeholders in conjunction with biological information to manage and recover threatened or endangered species. Stakeholder support is especially important to manage less charismatic or "little known" species. A representative survey of boat-based anglers (n = 443) was developed to this end with respect to rockfish (Sebastes spp.) in Puget Sound, Washington. Survey results discuss anglers' relative knowledge of rockfish life history, regulations, and species familiarity; perceptions about threats to rockfish; fishing practices; and preferences for recovery measures. Findings indicated that support for rockfish recovery was associated with anglers who historically fished for rockfish, yet few anglers took specific fishing trips to target them. Preferences for rockfish recovery measures among anglers varied. Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that knowledge of rockfish life history was a significant explanatory variable for only some recovery preferences, namely for marine protected areas. Additionally, perceptions of rockfish threat type were the most important explanatory variables for recovery preferences - more important than rockfish knowledge, fishing experience, group association, or other demographic variables. Findings can inform managers' planning as they seek methods to: 1) encourage rockfish conservation through targeted education, 2) obtain more accurate records of self-reported released catch, 3) bridge gaps between scientific evidence and commonly-held beliefs, and 4) increase the efficacy of future management actions.

Download or read book The Fish s Eye written by Ian Frazier and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Fish's Eye: Essays about Angling and the Outdoors, Ian Frazier explores his lifelong passion for fishing, fish, and the aquatic world. He sees the angler's environment all around him-in New York's Grand Central Station, in the cement-lined pond of a city park, in a shimmering bonefish flat in the Flordia keys, in the trout streams of the Rocky Mountains. He marvels at the fishing in the turbid Ohio River by downtown Cincinatti, where a good bait for catfsh is half a White Castle french fry. The incidentals of the angling experience, the who and the where of it, interest him as much as what he catches and how. The essays (including the famous profile of master angler Jim Deren, late proprietor of New York's tackle store, the Angler's Roost) contain sharply focused observations of the American outdoors, a place filled with human alterations and detritus that somehow remains defiantly unruined. Frazier's simple love of the sport lifts him to straight -ahead angling description that are among the best contemporary writing on the subject. The Fish's Eye brings together twenty years of heartfelt, funny, and vivid essays on a timeless pursuit where so many mysteries, both human and natural, coincide.

Book How to Think Like a Fish

Download or read book How to Think Like a Fish written by Jeremy Wade and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The star of the Animal Planet's River Monsters and author of the bestselling companion book shares a meditation on fishing--and life. In his previous book, Jeremy Wade memorably recounted his adventures in pursuit of fish of staggering proportions and terrifying demeanor: goliath tigerfish from the Congo, arapaima from the Amazon, "giant devil catfish" from the Himalayan foothills, and more. Now, the greatest angling explorer of his generation returns to delight readers with a book of a different sort, the book he was always destined to write -- the distillation of a life spent fishing. As Jeremy's catches attract increasing attention, many people ask him how they can improve their own fishing results. This book is his reply: part science, part art, and part elusive something else -- which is within every angler's ability to develop. Along the way you will learn when to let instinct override logic, which details are vital and which may be irrelevant, and how a "non result" can be a result. Thoughtful and funny, brimming with wisdom and, above all, adventure, these are pitch-perfect reflections that anyone who has ever fished will identify with, for ultimately they touch on the simple, fundamental principles that apply to all angling -- and to life.

Book It s More Than Fishing

Download or read book It s More Than Fishing written by Pat Murray and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The only constant in fishing is that the fish are still trying to avoid being caught as hard today as they were 100 or 1,000 years ago. To improve as anglers, we must be willing to change and evolve.” It’s More Than Fishing is a how-to guide for Texas coastal fishing that addresses a number of key aspects of coastal angling, including the basics of patterning, fishing the Texas surf, choosing lures and baits, common myths and misconceptions, and what to keep in mind when hiring a fishing guide. In addition to these how-to elements, It’s More Than Fishing also includes insight and information from marine biologists, fishing legends, and guides about coastal angling and the importance of conservation. Author Pat Murray has spent more than two decades as a marine conservation professional and more than four decades as a Texas coastal angler, and he emphasizes the critical role of recreational anglers in protecting and enhancing marine resources. Each chapter begins with a handy summary to guide readers through the information, making it easy to jump around. Throughout the book, Murray reminds the reader that angling is part science, but it’s also part art. Similar to fine arts, culinary pursuits, and any other timeless crafts, angling is an evolving skill that has been in practice for centuries. Successful fishing requires a mixture of knowledge, practice, patience, and skill. Murray believes that if anglers view their pursuit as an art, they will not only invest in developing their skills, but their passion for fishing and ocean resources will increase along with their catches.

Book Fishing with Confidence

Download or read book Fishing with Confidence written by John Mark Warren and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all of my years fishing, I've recognized that most of bass fishing's intelligentsia tends to focus on the bass and its behaviors to teach the angler how to better catch them. While this is important, too little time is devoted to helping the angler to understand the angler, and his/her responsibilities toward success. Anglers must have a better understanding of the limitations and governing factors of the sport, and of the common sense truths that promote the development of an indestructible confidence needed to execute the demands of fishing. Do you find that confidence in your bass angling skills is erratically elusive? Whether you're a seriously devoted tournament angler or an aspiring novice, every bass angler experiences this universal problem. And there are very specific and justifiable reasons for it. Fishing with Confidence addresses these reasons, and lights the way to more prosperous and confident fishing. Fishing with Confidence goes beyond the over exemplified and often redundant 'tips and techniques, ' and in groundbreaking fashion tells the story of bass fishing straight. Author John Mark Warren uses reasoned and sound fishing principles, his 35 years of insight, the wisdom and truth from professional anglers, and an exposure of a market driven media to create a template that ensures lasting self confidence in every aspiring and passionate bass angler. John has faced the challenges that every serious angler faces. His uncompromising standard of truth and accuracy shines a new light on just what makes good anglers more proficient and confident anglers. So, when you are done looking for manufactured remedies at your local bait shop, try honing your craft with Fishing with Confidence. 'Need to know everything that you need to know about bass fishing in order to return home grinning, and not grouching? Book Fishing Gone

Download or read book Fishing Gone written by Sid Dobrin and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have a rapacious relationship with the world’s ocean, extracting immeasurable quantities of its inhabitants and resources, while simultaneously depositing unbound sums of pollution into it. If we are to move toward sustainable practices, then we must first move toward ways of thinking about fish and fisheries beyond mere economic agendas. And there is one group in particular who could make an impact: saltwater anglers. Recreational saltwater fishing is big business and big culture. The industry is one of the largest in the United States, but that has not translated into a cohesive effort, agenda, or ethic. Saltwater anglers, a diverse group with a range of motivations, do not belong to a single organization through which to galvanize significant voting or lobbying power toward conservation regulation. As a result, federal policymakers have traditionally focused on commercial harvesting interests. Dubbed the “most contemplative of pastimes,” recreational fishing provides a valuable perspective on how humans interact with saltwater environments. Fishing, Gone? builds on this tradition of reflection and opens up the saltwater sportfishing life as a method for thinking through the current status of marine fisheries and environment. Author Sid Dobrin calls on fellow saltwater anglers to reconsider their relationship to fishes and the ocean—the sport can no longer be only about the joy and freedom of fishing, but it must also be about living for the ocean, living with the ocean, and living through the ocean. It is about securing the opportunity to fish on while meeting the economic and environmental challenges that lie ahead.
