The book shows a man's search for God, and how he found him (or, better, how God found him).

Book The Foreign Soul the Angelus

Download or read book The Foreign Soul the Angelus written by Guy de Maupassant and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-12-05 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Foreign Soul we are in classic Maupassant territory. Robert Mariolle, a wealthy Parisian bachelor, has just arrived in the fashionable spa town of Aix-les-Bains determined to enjoy himself at the casino in the company of high society, attempting to get over his break up with mistress, Henriette Lambel. The Angelus was intended to be Maupassant's great masterpiece, an ambitious inverted allegory of Christianity into which the author would pour his growing pessimism and despair. Set during the Franco-Prussian War, as were some of Maupassant's finest short stories, The Angelus finds the pregnant Countess de Bremontal alone in her chateau as Prussian troops move into the neighbourhood. Here are the first English translations of Maupassant's two unfinished novels, The Foreign Soul [L'Ame etrangere] and The Angelus [L'Angelus], together with full critical apparatus, including secondary sources outlining Maupassant's future plot ideas and an essay on The Foreign Soul by Paul Bourget.

Book The Hypercontemporary Novel in Portugal

Download or read book The Hypercontemporary Novel in Portugal written by Paulo de Medeiros and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of critical essays on the contemporary Portuguese novel in English, this book theorizes the concept of the 'hypercontemporary' as a way of reading the novel after its postmodern period. This inquiry into the notion of the hypercontemporary in its literary and cultural articulations analyzes a varied group of works representative of the most vibrant novels published in Portugal since 2000. The editors' introductory chapter theorizes the concept of the hypercontemporary as one way of looking at the novel after its postmodern period – especially in its relation to questions of violence, memory and performativity. These essays show how the Portuguese novel has evolved in the past 25 years, and how, in their diversity, most of these novels exhibit several common traits, including new topics and writing strategies – sometimes developing further entropic lines characteristic of many Postmodern narratives – and themes of violence, rapid transformation, and the many threats to a contemporary world that seems mass-produced due to greater technological advances. Readings also discuss the use of innovative graphic forms available from current print technologies and global networks. The Hypercontemporary Novel in Portugal provides a necessary understanding of the current literary landscape of Portugal and, in the process, the aesthetics of hyperrealism or post-postmodernism.

Book Portuguese Piano Music

  • Author : Nancy Lee Harper
  • Publisher : Scarecrow Press

Download or read book Portuguese Piano Music written by Nancy Lee Harper and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first book of its kind, Nancy Lee Harper’s Portuguese Piano Music: An Introduction and Annotated Bibliography fills the gap in the historical record of Portuguese piano music from its start in the 18th century to the present. While although Spanish piano music is well documented owing to the reputation of such composers as Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados, and Manuel de Falla, our knowledge of compositions in the tradition of Portuguese piano music has not fared as well, barring the work of Carlos Seixas (1704–1742). This obscurity, however, reflects poorly on the history of early piano music in light of the many compositions written for fortepiano on behalf of the Portuguese court during the first half of the 18th century. Indeed, it was in the royal halls of King John V during his reign from 1706 to 1750 where the early fortepiano was frequently heard. In Portuguese Piano Music, Harper explores this rich musical tradition, offering a brief introduction to the pianistic history of Portugal and overviews of Portugal’s contributions to solo piano music, piano in instrumental chamber music, piano concerti, piano for multiple pianists including with works with electronics, and didactic piano. While paying close attention to female composers, Harper adds an annotated and graded bibliography that presents readers with a comprehensive inventory of compositions. Appendixes include a selected discography, list of publishers, and other types of critical source information. To further illustrate its contents, Portuguese Piano Music contains a CD on which Harper performs representative repertoire, some of which are world premieres. This work is aimed at pianists, teachers, pupils, musicologists, and music lovers seeking to discover the remarkable world of Portuguese piano music.

Book Portuguese Missionary Grammars in Asia Africa and Brazil 1550 1800

Download or read book Portuguese Missionary Grammars in Asia Africa and Brazil 1550 1800 written by Otto Zwartjes and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 16th century onwards, Europeans encountered languages in the Americas, Africa, and Asia which were radically different from any of the languages of the Old World. Missionaries were in the forefront of this encounter: in order to speak to potential converts, they needed to learn local languages. A great wealth of missionary grammars survives from the 16th century onwards. Some of these are precious records of the languages they document, and all of them witness their authors' attempts to develop the methods of grammatical description with which they were familiar, to accommodate dramatically new linguistic features. This book is the first monograph covering the whole Portuguese grammatical tradition outside Portugal. Its aim is to provide an integrated description, analysis and evaluation of the missionary grammars which were written in Portuguese. Between them, these grammars covered a huge range of languages: in Asia, Tamil, four Indo-Aryan languages and Japanese; in Brazil, Kipeá and Tupinambá; in Africa and the African diaspora, Kimbundu and Sena (from the modern Angola and Mozambique respectively). Each text is placed in its historical context, and its linguistic context is analyzed, with particular attention to orthography, the parts of speech system, morphology and syntax. Whenever possible, pedagogical features of the grammars are discussed, together with their treatment of language variation and pragmatics, and the evidence they provide for the missionaries' attitude towards the languages they studied.

Book Boaventura and Education

Download or read book Boaventura and Education written by Inês Barbosa de Oliveira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the work of the leading critical and decolonial intellectual Boaventura de Sousa Santos and its impact on education in general, and curriculum in particular. The volume brings to the table crucial itinerant theoretical rivers of thought in order to examine and understand the crises of modernity and their consequences. The author insightfully articulates Sousa Santos’ major arguments – ‘prudent knowledge’, ‘decent life’, ‘sociology of absences’, and ‘epistemicide’, among others – to unpack some of the major issues facing the contemporary critical terrain. In so doing, she examines how Sousa Santos retools the critical ‘emancipatory educational project’ towards a more just and participatory democratic society. “Boaventura de Sousa Santos’ groundbreaking theories on epistemology, politics, and society are weaved into brilliant focus against the backdrop of educational practice. What emerges is a powerful exposé of political tensions, contestations, and ruptures, inherent to the struggle against the persistent colonizing forces in the lives of oppressed populations. Central to this decolonizing treatise are the paradigmatic transformations essential to an education truly in the service of democratic life.” – Antonia Darder, Leavey Endowed Chair of Ethics & Moral Leadership, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Education, University of Johannesburg, South Africa “A must read for educators and for students. Boaventura and Education allows one to understand the importance of the work of Boaventura de Sousa Santos that is essential for those who struggle for another world; that is more just, democratic, and united.” – Jurjo Torres Santomé, Professor, Universidade de A Coruña, Spain “In her work of art, precision, and clarity on the work of Boaventura, Inês Barbosa de Oliveira offers us a new framework with which to analyze and critically understand education. ... Oliveira’s Boaventura and Education is a fundamental tool for thinking critically for all those who oppose the mental paralysis that harasses us.” – José Félix Angulo Rasco, Professor of Education, University of Cadiz, Spain, Professor of Education, Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile
