Beginning with Ida B. Wells and the campaign against lynching in the 1890s, Fairclough chronicles the tradition of protest that led to the formation of the NAACP, Booker T. Washington and the strategy of accommodation, Marcus Garvey and the push for black nationalism, through to Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and beyond. Throughout, Fairclough presents a judicious interpretation of historical events that balances the achievements of the Civil Rights Movement against the persistence of racial and economic inequalities.

Book excerpt: In today's society, there is little existing that causes people to think. Very seldom someone or something comes along evoking a thought in the minds of many. "Wakeupandthink" does just that. Malcolm Young took a serious interest in poetry over six years ago. Influenced by a poem written by a relative, he began to write. Wakeupandthink is a masterpiece of poetry formulated by Malcolm. Within this work he shines light on social issues and pressures that often plague America's young and old. He crosses both race and gender barriers with his words of love, peace, freedom, equality, justice, and consciousness. He composes pieces that are both revolutionary and thought provoking. Malcolm inspires us through his word to wake up from our dream state and think. "An inspirational, heart-felt, and progressive labor; that shines a light for all who desire a forward movement." Book A Long Way Gone

Download or read book A Long Way Gone written by Ishmael Beah and published by Sarah Crichton Books. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Long Way Gone Ishmael Beah tells a riveting story in his own words: how, at the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he'd been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. My new friends have begun to suspect I haven't told them the full story of my life. "Why did you leave Sierra Leone?" "Because there is a war." "You mean, you saw people running around with guns and shooting each other?" "Yes, all the time." "Cool." I smile a little. "You should tell us about it sometime." "Yes, sometime." This is how wars are fought now: by children, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s. Children have become soldiers of choice. In the more than fifty conflicts going on worldwide, it is estimated that there are some 300,000 child soldiers. Ishmael Beah used to be one of them. What is war like through the eyes of a child soldier? How does one become a killer? How does one stop? Child soldiers have been profiled by journalists, and novelists have struggled to imagine their lives. But until now, there has not been a first-person account from someone who came through this hell and survived. This is a rare and mesmerizing account, told with real literary force and heartbreaking honesty.

Book Breaking Down Barriers Becoming FREE

Download or read book Breaking Down Barriers Becoming FREE written by Stephanie Thom and published by Booktango. This book was released on 2014-03-07 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking Down Barriers and Becoming Free is a compilation of writings that reveals a deep introspection of the struggle of learning to understand yourself and learning to be known in God. This book illustrates an internal manifestation of breakthrough, enlightenment and freedom through the transforming power of God. It is a journey that frees one from the concept of who we have been taught God is which usually derived from religion, to an actual relationship and knowledge of who God actually is. It also shows the tenacity that can be found in someone who truly seeks to know God, and the infinite love of God that undoubtedly always seems to rescue us before we fall. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Book The Fate of Progress in British Romanticism

Download or read book The Fate of Progress in British Romanticism written by Mark Canuel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did Romantic writers mean when they wrote about "progress" and "perfection"? This book shows how Romantic writers inventively responded to familiar ideas about political progress which they inherited from the eighteenth century. Whereas earlier writers such as Voltaire and John Millar likened improvements in political institutions to the progress of the sciences or refinement of manners, the novelists, poets, and political theorists examined in this book reimagined politically progressive thinking in multiple genres. While embracing a commitment to optimistic improvement—increasing freedom, equality, and protection from injury—they also cultivated increasingly visible and volatile energies of religious and political dissent. Earlier narratives of progress tended not only to edit and fictionalize history but also to agglomerate different modes of knowledge and practice in their quest to describe and prescribe uniform cultural improvement. But romantic writers seize on internal division and take it less as an occasion for anxiety, exclusion, or erasure, and more as an impetus to rethink the groundwork of progress itself. Political entities, from Percy Shelley's plans for political reform to Charlotte Smith's motley associations of strangers in The Banished Man, are progressive because they advance some version of collective utility or common good. But they simultaneously stake a claim to progress only insofar as they paradoxically solicit contending vantage points on the criteria for the very public benefit which they passionately pursue. The "majestic edifices" of Wordsworth's imagined university in The Prelude embrace members who are "republican or pious," not to mention the recalcitrant "enthusiast" who is the poet himself.
