Book excerpt: The Menard pressuremeter was utilized as one element of a comprehensive soil property characterization of medium to stiff, plastic, Pleistocene clays on which the pile foundations for a proposed coal-fired power plant would be supported. Pressuremeter testing was supplemented by drilling, sampling and laboratory testing. Various design methods were utilized to predict the ultimate capacity and load-deformation behavior of the pile foundations under axial and lateral loads. Analytical predictions were verified by a program of full-scale instrumented pile load testing on various types of piles including hel-cor corrugated straight-shaft, monotube, step-taper, precast concrete and pipe piles. Five axial tension and compression load tests and one lateral load test were conducted. The field and laboratory testing program confirmed that the pressuremeter provided accurate properties of the clay and that reliable predictions of axial and lateral pile capacity and deformation can be made using these properties.
