Book excerpt: The modern wireless communication systems require modulated signals with wide modulation bandwidth. This, in turns, requires signals with very high dynamic range and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This means that the amplifier in the base-station has to work at a power back-off as large as the dynamic range of the signal, so that the amplifier has a high linearity in this region. For the standard single-stage amplifiers, this large power back-off reduces the efficiency dramatically. In this work, a three-way Doherty power amplifier (DPA) aiming at high power efficiency within a dynamic range of 9.5 dB, is designed and fabricated using partitioning design approach. The partitioning design approach decomposes a complex design task into small-sized, well-controllable, and verifiable subcircuits. This advanced straight forward method has shown very promising results. Using this design approach, a three-way DPA has been designed to demonstrate the advantages of this reliable design technique as well. Based on the design of a single-stage power amplifier and proposing a novel output power combiner, a 6 W three-way DPA has been designed which allows the mandatory load modulation principle in three-way DPA structures to be realized with simpler elements, whereas the design of a standard Doherty combiner would have been very challenging and not practical due to the extremely small value of its characteristic line impedance. The proposed combiner is calculated for a three-way DPA with 2-mm AlGaN/GaN-HEMTs. The simulation result shows a very good load modulation for the amplifier, which confirms the theoretical expectation for a three-way DPA. The efficiency of the designed 6 W three-way DPA at large back-off shows very promising values compared to recently reported amplifiers. The measured IMD3 products confirm the good linearity of the amplifier as well. Accordingly, the proposed power combiner and the design strategy are recommended to be used as the preferred option for designing three-way DPA structures with very high output power.

Book excerpt: This thesis analyzes an amplifier architecture that combines a RF class D amplifier with a bandpass ∑delta modulator, broadening the utility of class D amplification to include signals with envelope variation. An integrated design methodology is presented that incorporates the coding efficiency and average pulse transition frequency of the encoded pulse train into classical RF class D amplifier design equations. The equations are used to predict the power efficiency of a complementary voltage switched class D amplifier design with CMOS, pHEMT, and MESFET switches. Simulated results are compared with the analysis and verify the design methodology. The power efficiency analysis shows a direct link between modulator coding efficiency and the output power of the amplifier; therefore, a modulator with high coding efficiency is desirable. It is shown that coding efficiency depends significantly on the order of the modulator loop filter as well as the carrier oversample ratio employed in the design. The variation with carrier oversample ratio is not monotonic for second and fourth order modulators, and some oversample ratios are more optimal than others. Bandpass ∑-delta modulation synthesizes a pulse train with synchronous zero-crossings, and the coding efficiency limitations of encoding a binary amplitude pulse train with constrained zero-crossings is analyzed. The analysis and characterization of other encoder designs shows that bandpass sigma-delta modulation is remarkably efficient. The analysis is extended to pulse train upconversion employing Manchester encoding. Upconversion reduces the difficulty of implementing highly selective noise shaping resonators at RF frequencies, and the impact of upconversion in terms of coding efficiency and average transition frequency is shown.

Book excerpt: Innovation in wireless communication has resulted in accelerating demand for smartphones using multiple communications protocols such as WiFi, Bluetooth and the many cellular standards deployed around the world. The variety of frequency, bandwidth and power requirements associated with each standard typically calls for the implementation of separate radio frequency (RF) front end hardware for each standard. This is a less-than-ideal solution in terms of cost and device area. Software-defined radio (SDR) promises to solve this problem by allowing the RF hardware to be digitally reconfigurable to adapt to any wireless standard. The application of machine learning and cognition algorithms to SDR will enable cognitive radios and cognitive wireless networks, which will be able to intelligently adapt to user needs and surrounding radio spectrum conditions. The challenge of fully reconfigurable transceivers is in implementing digitally-controlled RF circuits which have comparable performance to their fixed-frequency counterparts. Switching-mode power amplifiers (SMPA) are likely to be an important part of fully reconfigurable transmitters since their switching operation provides inherent compatibility with digital circuits, with the added benefit of very high efficiency. As a step to understanding the RF requirements of high efficiency and switching PAs, an inverse class F PA in push-pull configuration is implemented. This configuration is chosen for its similarity to the current mode class D (CMCD) topology. The fabricated PA achieves a peak drain efficiency of over 75% with 42.7 dBm (18.6 W) output power at 2.46 GHz. Since SMPAs cannot directly provide the linearity required by current and future wireless communications standards, amplitude information must be encoded into the RF signal in a different way. Given the superior time resolution of digital integrated circuit (IC) technology, a logical solution is to encode this information into the timing of the signal. The two most common techniques for doing so are pulse width modulation and delta-sigma modulation. However, the design of delta-sigma modulators requires simulation as part of the design process due to the lack of closed-form relationships between modulator parameters (such as resolution and oversampling) and performance figures (such as coding efficiency and signal quality). In particular, the coding efficiency is often ignored although it is an important part of ensuring transmitter efficiency with respect to the desired signal. A study of these relationships is carried out to observe the tradeoffs between them. It is found that increasing the speed or complexity of a DS modulated system does not necessarily translate to performance benefits as one might expect. These observations can have a strong impact on design choices at the system level.

This dissertation presents a study of phase distortion in RF power amplifiers (PAs) with emphasis on identification of the origins of phase distortion in EER RF power amplifiers. Circuit-level techniques for distortion mitigation are also presented.

Book excerpt: Radio Frequency (RF) Power Amplifiers are responsible for a considerable amount of the power consumption in the entire transmitter-receiver (transceiver) of modern communication systems. The stringent linearity requirements of multi-standard transceivers to minimize cross-talking effects makes Linear Power Amplifiers, particularly class A, the preferred choice in broadband transceivers. This linearity requirement coupled with the fact that the Power Amplifier operates at low transmit power during most of its operation makes the efficiency of the entire transceiver poor. The limited transceiver efficiency leads to a reduction in the battery life of battery operated portable devices like mobile phones; hence drastically limiting talk time. To alleviate this issue, several research groups propose solutions to improve PA power efficiency. However, these solutions usually have a low efficiency at low power and are mostly limited to narrow bandwidth applications. In this thesis, the efficiency of a class A Power amplifier in wideband wireless standards like WiMax is improved by dynamically controlling the bias current and supply voltage of the PA. An efficient supply modulator based on a switching regulator architecture is proposed for controlling the supply voltage. The switching regulator is found to be slew-limited by the bulky inductor and capacitor used to regulate the supply voltage. The proposed solution alleviates the slew rate limitation by adding a bang-bang controlled current source. The proposed supply modulator has an average power efficiency of 81.6% and is suitable for wireless standards with bandwidths up to 20MHz compared to the relatively lower efficiencies and bandwidths of state of the art modulators. A class-A PA is shown to promise an average power efficiency of 21.3% when the bias current is controlled dynamically and the supply voltage is varied using the proposed supply modulator. This is a significant improvement over the poor average efficiency of 1.06% for a fixed bias conventional linear class A PA. The project has been simulated using the TSMC 0.18 [mu]m technology.
