Book Analyses linguistiques sur corpus Subordination et insubordination en fran ais

Download or read book Analyses linguistiques sur corpus Subordination et insubordination en fran ais written by DEBAISIEUX Jeanne-Marie and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book In Search of Basic Units of Spoken Language

Download or read book In Search of Basic Units of Spoken Language written by Shlomo Izre'el and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the best way to analyze spontaneous spoken language? In their search for the basic units of spoken language the authors of this volume opt for a corpus-driven approach. They share a strong conviction that prosodic structure is essential for the study of spoken discourse and each bring their own theoretical and practical experience to the table. In the first part of the book they segment spoken material from a range of different languages (Russian, Hebrew, Central Pomo (an indigenous language from California), French, Japanese, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese). In the second part of the book each author analyzes the same two spoken English samples, but looking at them from different perspectives, using different methods of analysis as reflected in their respective analyses in Part I. This approach allows for common tendencies of segmentation to emerge, both prosodic and segmental.

Book Information Structure in Lesser described Languages

Download or read book Information Structure in Lesser described Languages written by Evangelia Adamou and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles compiled in this volume offer new insights into the wealth of prosodic and syntactic phenomena involved in the encoding of information structure categories. They present data from languages which are rarely, if ever, taken into account in the most prominent approaches in information structure theory, and which belong to the Afroasiatic, Amerindian, Australian, Caucasian, and Niger-Congo language stocks. In addition to the significant descriptive value of these pioneering contributions, several studies also draw attention to previously undescribed or typologically rare phenomena. By adapting a variety of methods to under-described and endangered languages, ranging from experimental to naturalistic corpus studies, this volume also aims to serve as an invitation for further research in this direction.

Book Coptic Interference in the Greek Letters from Egypt

Download or read book Coptic Interference in the Greek Letters from Egypt written by VICTORIA. FENDEL and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt in the early Byzantine period was a bilingual country where Greek and Egyptian (Coptic) were used alongside each other. Historical studies along with linguistic studies of the phonology and lexicon of early Byzantine Greek in Egypt testify to this situation. In order to describe the linguistic traces that the language-contact situation left behind in individuals' linguistic output, Coptic Interference in the Syntax of Greek Letters from Egypt analyses the syntax of early Byzantine Greek texts from Egypt. The primary object of interest is bilingual interference in the syntax of verbs, adverbial phrases, clause linkage as well as in semi-formulaic expressions and formulaic frames. The study is based on a corpus of Greek and Coptic private letters on papyrus, which date from the fourth to mid-seventh centuries, originate from Egypt and belong to bilingual, Greek-Coptic, papyrus archives.

Book Forms and Functions of Meta Discourse

Download or read book Forms and Functions of Meta Discourse written by Maria Cristina Lo Baido and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the first systematic analysis of meta-discourse in the spoken domain, addressing the question of how, why, and when speakers switch from discourse to meta-discourse by means of comment clauses (e.g., ‘I think’). The case of Present-day Italian is considered, exploring the internal properties of comment clauses (e.g., morphosyntax and semantics of the verb), their relations with the surrounding discourse (e.g., position of comment clause), and their prosodic profiles. This study shows that speakers recur to meta-discourse to convey a non-random set of functions, having mainly to do with the online process of reference construction (e.g., approximation and reformulation) and with the degree of speaker’s commitment (e.g., epistemicity and emphasis). Comment clauses are also used as attention-getting or topic-resuming devices, though less frequently. One of the most interesting results of this study is the identification of a close relation between meta-discourse and stance-taking in spoken domain, with speakers recurring to comment clauses to convey their attitude. Finally, meta-discourse turns out to be highly influenced, if not constrained, by universal properties of the spoken domain (i.e., non-linearity).

Book Insubordination

Download or read book Insubordination written by Karin Beijering and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insubordinate clauses present a challenge for grammatical analysis. This is owed to their unusual combination of subordinate structure with main clause use. This volume brings together a collection of articles on the form and function of insubordination in a range of languages – providing an up-to-date overview of current research on the topic.

Book Rhapsodie

Download or read book Rhapsodie written by Anne Lacheret-Dujour and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes the development of Rhapsodie, a 33,000-word syntactic and prosodic treebank of spoken French created with the aim of modeling the interface between prosody, syntax and discourse in spoken French. Theoretical foundations and methodological choices are presented and discussed, and compared with other contemporary approaches. Why is a data-driven instead of a corpus-based approach necessary when one wants to model and analyze discourse without neglecting the features typical of everyday speech, in order to capture not only what we say but also how we say it? How can one show that verbal exchange operates as a collaborative enterprise and how can the specific syntactic and prosodic markers of this collaboration be merged? The description proposed in this collective book is of interest for specialists of spoken French studies, and also for scholars who would like to extend Rhapsodie-like annotation schemes to other languages.

Book Dialogues homme machine

Download or read book Dialogues homme machine written by Collectif and published by Presses Sorbonne Nouvelle via OpenEdition. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Building Modality with Syntax

Download or read book Building Modality with Syntax written by Camille Denizot and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-09-18 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the intensive research carried out in recent years, modality remains an intriguing and challenging issue in linguistics. This book investigates modality from a syntactic viewpoint and with a bottom-up approach. A strong focus of the book is the interaction between the different linguistic tools that build modality (moods, modal verbs, modal adverbs, etc.), taking both the role of syntactic structure and the compositionality of modal meanings into account. The volume comprises corpus-based studies devoted to several syntactic aspects of modality in Ancient Greek, within different theoretical frameworks. The chapters shed new light on different modal categories (e.g. epistemicity, possibility, counterfactuality, evidentiality, subjectivity) and show how these modal meanings arise from the combination of different linguistic devices in specific syntactic contexts (e.g. combinations of modal elements, types of main and dependent clauses, types of illocutionary acts, etc.). By approaching modality from a different perspective and providing an up-to-date discussion of several aspects of modality, the book makes a significant contribution to current debates.

Book Complex Words Causatives Verbal Periphrases and the Gerund

Download or read book Complex Words Causatives Verbal Periphrases and the Gerund written by Petr Čermák and published by Charles University in Prague, Karolinum Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph focuses on the typological differences between the four most widely spoken Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian) and Czech. Utilizing data from InterCorp, the parallel corpus project of the Czech National Corpus, the book analyses various categories (expression of potential non-volitional participation, iterativity, causation, beginning of an action and adverbial subordination) to discover differences and similarities between Czech and the Romance languages. Due to the massive amount of data mined, as well as the high number of languages examined, the monograph presents general and individual typological features of the four Romance languages and Czech that often exceed what has previously been accepted in the field of comparative linguistics.

Book The Acquisition of Complex Sentences

Download or read book The Acquisition of Complex Sentences written by Holger Diessel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive study of how children acquire complex sentences. Drawing on observational data from English-speaking children aged 2 to 5, Holger Diessel investigates the acquisition of infinitival and participial complement clauses, finite complement clauses, finite and nonfinite relative clauses, adverbial clauses, and coordinate clauses. His investigation shows that the development of complex sentences originates from simple non-embedded sentences and that two different developmental pathways can be distinguished: complex sentences including complement and relative clauses evolve from simple sentences that are gradually expanded to multiple-clause constructions, and complex sentences including adverbial and coordinate clauses develop from simple sentences that are integrated in a specific biclausal unit. He argues that the acquisition process is determined by a variety of factors: the frequency of the various complex sentences in the ambient language, the semantic and syntactic complexity of the emerging constructions, the communicative functions of complex sentences, and the social-cognitive development of the child.
