Book Conduct Disorder and Offending Behaviour in Young People

Download or read book Conduct Disorder and Offending Behaviour in Young People written by Joanna Richardson and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2007-06-15 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `This is the latest in a series of accessible, evidence-based resources from Jessica Kingsley Publishers for those seeking to understand and promote young people's mental health. Trawling through the evidence, the authors start by looking at the nature and prevalence of conduct disorders including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and how they relate to factors such as depression, substance misuse and learning disabilities. They also look at preventive methods and services available to adolescents in the wake of Ever Child Matters. The book then deals with different approaches to treatment, from individual programmes using cognitive behaviour therapy to family, school-based and pharmacological interventions. It suggests family therapies are the most promising, with little evidence supporting the efficacy of medication.' - Youth Work Now Offending behaviour in young people is a problem not only for affected neighbours and communities; it is also a serious problem for the young people involved. Behaviour problems and involvement in criminal activities have been linked to continued offending, substance misuse, lack of education and work - all factors that are linked, in turn, with shorter life expectancy. This book reviews the literature on a number of techniques and treatment approaches designed for use with adolescent conduct disorder and young offenders. The authors also provide an overview of the condition including its developmental pathway; the criteria for diagnosing conduct disorder, and services for adolescents. Conduct disorder and offending behaviour in young people are complex problems that need multi-agency, multifaceted solutions. This book aims to contribute to the design of services by drawing on a wide range of high-quality research, and presents it for the non-specialist. It is essential reading for child and adolescent mental health practitioners, social workers, youth offending teams and other professionals working with young people with conduct problems and their families.

Book Drugs Crime and Their Relationships

Download or read book Drugs Crime and Their Relationships written by Glenn D. Walters and published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveys administered to high school students, studies carried out on jail and prison inmates, and interviews conducted with substance abusers undergoing treatment all point to the same conclusion: drugs and crime are strongly connected. Why they are connected is less well understood, however. Written for middle to upper-level undergraduate courses on drugs and crime or substance abuse and crime, this book examines the drug-crime connection in a systematic and comprehensive way. This book covers the entire drug-crime spectrum, starting with a review of drug and crime terminology, classification and theory, and ending with policy implications for prevention, harm reduction, and macro-level management of the drug-crime problem. The opening chapters discuss drugs and crime separately for the purpose of setting the stage for later discussions on drug-crime relationships. As the book proceeds, the boundaries between drugs and crime blur, thus revealing the complex and intimate relationship that links these two behaviors.

Book Children in Foster Care

Download or read book Children in Foster Care written by James Barber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers, practitioners, journalists and politicians increasingly recognise that foster care throughout the world is in a state of crisis. There are more and more children needing care and, as residential alternatives dry up, more of these children are being assigned to foster families. This book reports the major findings of a two-year longitudinal study of 235 such children who entered the foster care system in Southern Australia between 1998 and 1999. As well as examining the changing policy context of children's services, the book documents the psychosocial outcomes for these children, their feedback on their experiences of care, and the views of their social workers and carers. In the process, the book examines some cherished beliefs about foster care policy and sheds new light on them. The research reveals that while most children do quite well in foster care up to the two-year point, there is a worrying amount of placement instability at a time when the concentration of emotionally troubled children in care is increasing throughout the western world. Although, surprisingly, placement instability does not appear to produce psychosocial impairment for a period of up to eight months in care, it has an extreme effect on children who are moved from placement to placement because no carer will tolerate their behaviour. These children are consigned to a life of distribution and emotional upheaval because of the lack of alternative forms of care. Another unexpected finding of the research is that increasing the rate of parental contact achieves little or nothing in relation to the likelihood of family reunification. As child welfare increasingly enters a world of research-based practice, Children in Foster Care provides some much needed hard evidence of how foster care policy and practice can be improved.

Book Artificial Intelligence and Mental Health Care

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence and Mental Health Care written by Jorge Piano Simoes and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-08-09 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New developments in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) hold great promise to revolutionize mental health care. In this context, ML and AI have been deployed for several different goals, including 1) the early detection of mental disorders, 2) the optimization of personalized treatments based on the individual characteristics of patients, 3) the better characterization of disorders detrimental to mental well-being and quality of life, as well as a better description of projected trajectories over time, and 4) the development of new treatments for mental health care. Despite their great potential to transform mental health care and occasional breakthroughs, ML and AI have not yet fully achieved these goals. This research topic aims to bridge the gap between the potential uses of ML and AI and their practical application in standard mental health care. More specifically, we welcome original research submissions applying ML and AI to promote public health by reducing the burden of chronic disorders with detrimental effects on well-being (e.g., psychopathological distress), and improving quality of life. We also welcome submissions applying ML and AI in heterogeneous datasets (e.g., subjective scales and questionnaires, biomarkers, (neuro)psychological assessments, etc.) from Big Data sources (e.g., large datasets of clinical populations, electronic health records from nationally representative cohorts, and/or biobanks, studies using experiencing sampling methods, etc.) to gain mechanistic insight on how different chronic conditions associated with psychopathological distress can affect patient well-being and quality of life. Finally, we also welcome opinion papers and reviews on how to develop AI applications in mental health care responsibly, while integrating biopsychosocial aspects of patients to promote better mental health care.

Book Mental Health of Children and Adolescents with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Download or read book Mental Health of Children and Adolescents with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities written by David Dosetor and published by IP Communications. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at high risk of co-morbid emotional, behavioural, and psychiatric problems that may further reduce their functional abilities. For the clinicians who support them and their families, meeting the needs of children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health problems is challenging. In this book, clinicians who work with young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health problems will find a comprehensive framework for how their complex needs might best be addressed. Relevant biological, developmental, family, educational, social, and cultural factors are integrated. The evolution of developmental sequence is seen as vital to understanding the mental health problems of young people with disabilities. This view informs multi-dimensional assessment of behaviour, and addresses conceptual confusion in defining behaviour problems, developmental disorders, mental disorders, and serious mental illnesses. Evidence-based interventions to promote skill development and mental health in young people with disabilities are described. A model for how interdisciplinary and multi-agency collaboration and co-ordination might be facilitated is outlined. Parents’ perspectives are also presented. Fundamentally, though, this is a book by clinicians, for clinicians. All clinicians and other professionals who work to improve mental health outcomes and quality of life more generally for young people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities - paediatricians, child psychiatrists, psychologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, social workers, behaviour clinicians, counsellors, teachers, agency managers, among others – will find the book invaluable.

Written by international experts in psychology and related disciplines from diverse fields of study and clinical backgrounds, this handbook is a comprehensive resource that will meet the needs of clinicians, researchers, and graduate students with an interest in the multidisciplinary and emerging field of child and adolescent sleep and behavior.
