Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Recent European History, 1815-1916 This outline with the accompanying references is a revision and enlargement of previous editions of "An Outline of Recent European History" prepared in 1916 and 1918 for the use of students at the Ohio State University. Like its predecessors it contains much fuller references to the period since 1870 than the earlier years. Hazen, Europe Since 1815, Schapiro, Modern and Contemporary European History, and the second volume of Hayes, Political and Social History of Modern Europe have been followed in preparing the outline; and references to all these excellent books have been appended to most of the topics. Students should read one or more of these and at least one of the "Additional References" under each special topic. The purpose of the outline is not to provide a brief summary of the facts, predigested mental pabulum, as it were; but to provide a scheme of organization, to suggest to the student what he is to look for as he reads, and to teach him to distinguish between essentials and non-essentials. Hence the facts are not usually stated, but the student is left to work them out from his reference readings. Though the outline and references have been prepared primarily for use in the writer's own classes, it is hoped that they may be useful to other instructors who are using the admirable books on which the outline is based. Book Europe in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Europe in the Nineteenth Century written by Ephraim Lipson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe in the Nineteenth Century: An Outline History This book was written in order to provide students and general readers with a short survey of the History of Europe in the Nineteenth Century. The plan on which the book was based has given rise to some discussion as to the best way of writing European History. Professor Hearnshaw, in his M win Currents of European History, after quoting the preface to the first edition, concluded in favour Of the more usual method, which he has himself followed in his own work, but most Of the reviewers of this book expressed their agree ment with the method here adopted. Experience Of teach ing the subject for several years has convinced me that the student is most likely to Obtain an intelligent grasp of European History when each country is treated, as far as possible, as a separate entity, although due recognition must be paid to the working of forces which have affected the destinies of all. I recognize, however, that there is ample room for both methods, nor is there any necessity for adopting one to the exclusion Of the other. Book Europe on the Path to Self Destruction

Download or read book Europe on the Path to Self Destruction written by Jack L. Schwartzwald and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-07-19 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the years 1815 and 1945, Europe achieved unrivaled global dominance, only to see it shattered by two world wars. This frenetic rise and fall was attended by immense societal change. In 1815, Europe remained largely agricultural and dependent upon horsepower. By 1945, the power of the atom had been unleashed. Two industrial revolutions occurred in the interim--the first founded upon coal, iron and steam, the second upon oil, steel, electricity and internal combustion. The implications for humanity were profound. This concise yet comprehensive study is divided into three sections. In section one, the map of Europe emerges in its modern visage as unrestrained nationalist fervor gives rise to an assemblage of new nation-states. In section two, the continent attains global hegemony as massive industrialization fuels a mad scramble for colonial markets and raw materials. In section three, a cauldron of national, ethnic and class hatreds spawn the rise of totalitarianism and the overthrow of European hegemony in two calamitous world wars. By tracing the events and undercurrents of this vital period in European history, this book offers trenchant insights for the lay reader and the student of history alike.

Book excerpt: "Chilling... To Hell and Back should be required reading in every chancellery, every editorial cockpit and every place where peevish Euroskeptics do their thinking…. Kershaw documents each and every ‘ism’ of his analysis with extraordinary detail and passionate humanism."—The New York Times Book Review The Penguin History of Europe series reaches the twentieth century with acclaimed scholar Ian Kershaw’s long-anticipated analysis of the pivotal years of World War I and World War II. The European catastrophe, the long continuous period from 1914 to 1949, was unprecedented in human history—an extraordinarily dramatic, often traumatic, and endlessly fascinating period of upheaval and transformation. This new volume in the Penguin History of Europe series offers comprehensive coverage of this tumultuous era. Beginning with the outbreak of World War I through the rise of Hitler and the aftermath of the Second World War, award-winning British historian Ian Kershaw combines his characteristic original scholarship and gripping prose as he profiles the key decision makers and the violent shocks of war as they affected the entire European continent and radically altered the course of European history. Kershaw identifies four major causes for this catastrophe: an explosion of ethnic-racist nationalism, bitter and irreconcilable demands for territorial revisionism, acute class conflict given concrete focus through the Bolshevik Revolution, and a protracted crisis of capitalism. Incisive, brilliantly written, and filled with penetrating insights, To Hell and Back offers an indispensable study of a period in European history whose effects are still being felt today.
