A great multitude of books for this purpose have been issued from time to time, but in most of them the prayers are so long, and depart so widely from the Liturgical spirit of the Prayer-book, that they soon become wearisome. There are other compositions of a proper Liturgical character, but most of these are very elaborate, and their use requires that an expensive book shall be in the hands of each member of the family. The present compilation is an attempt to provide for the Family Altar the animation and spirit of Liturgical worship, and at the same time present a form of devotion so simple, and so easily adapted to the varying exigencies of a family from day to day, that it may suffice for the briefest as well as for the longest time that may be desirable for such a Service. For this purpose the Prayer-book is taken as the foundation, and its partial use prescribed, so that those additions need only be preserved as a thin pamphlet within the cover of the Prayer-book, The Versicles, which give so much life and community of feeling to all social worship, are the same as in the Morning and Evening Prayer of the Church, with the addition of several beautiful petitions from the English Prayer-book, which are, unfortunately, omitted from our own. A few of the additional Collects are taken from Bishop Jeremy Taylor; but the greater number from the same primitive sources from which those now in the Prayer-book were derived.
