Yeager-Crasselt's essay explores the central themes of An Inner World through the lens of Leiden as a university city and Dutch artists' interests in the illusionism of space, candlelight, and painted surfaces. Shira Brisman examines the use of candlelight in seventeenth-century paintings and its role as a source of illumination as well as an indicator of the larger issue of the wax trade and the "outer world" of commerce. Last, Eric Jorink reflects on the confluence of art, science, and religion in the Dutch Golden Age.

All the paintings are illustrated in colour and are accompanied by comparative illustrations and technical photographs.

Why is Rembrandt van Rijn today considered to be one of the greatest painters in European art while Gerard de Lairesse, Rembrandt's younger contemporary and one of the best-selling painters of his day, is now forgotten? This book is a systematic and quantitative study of taste. More specifically it focuses on the painters of the seventeenth-century Low Countries and follows the changes in consumer evaluation of them from the seventeenth century up to 2008. Proceeding from the same starting point as Gerald Reitlinger in his monumental The Economics of Taste, it uses the prices paintings have fetched at auction as a basis for tracing trends in the taste of the art-buying public. Whereas Reitlinger's approach was rather intuitive, this study develops a sound methodological basis for researching taste and auction prices. It is not only quantitative methods and properties of auction prices that require a specific approach: in historical research quantitative data and analyses are only reliable when they can also be tested against qualitative or historical sources. Based on a statistical analysis, various 'universal' painters, such as Rubens and Rembrandt, are defined. In addition, however, specific genres such as landscape, portrait, history painting, and so on are analysed. In the case of eighty-three painters there is sufficient information to allow the profiling of individual price trends. But other quantitative data drawn from the examination of collections or catalogues raisonnes prove an additional source of information when compared with auction prices. This book shows what big data and statistics can mean to our understanding of art.

By pairing Rembrandt’s twenty-two extant drawings of Shah Jahan, Jahangir, Dara Shikoh, and other Mughal courtiers with Mughal paintings of similar compositions, the book critiques the prevailing notion that Rembrandt “brought life” to the static Mughal art. Written by scholars of both Dutch and Indian art, the essays in this volume instead demonstrate how Rembrandt’s contact with Mughal painting inspired him to draw in an entirely new, refined style on Asian paper—an approach that was shaped by the Dutch trade in Asia and prompted by the curiosity of a foreign culture. Seen in this light, Rembrandt’s engagement with India enriches our understanding of collecting in seventeenth-century Amsterdam, the Dutch global economy, and Rembrandt’s artistic self-fashioning. Book excerpt: The Paintings of Hendrick ter Brugghen (1588-1629), is the first major study of this important early seventeenth-century master since Benedict Nicolson's classic monograph of 1958. It comprises two chapters that explore ter Brugghen's development as an artist and the reception of his work among contemporaries, followed by a truly monumental catalogue raisonné of ter Brugghen's 89 authentic paintings, 54 pictures associated with the artist and/or his workshop, 141 rejected works, 42 lost works, and lastly, 10 drawings that have been linked to ter Brugghen directly or related to his paintings. Already celebrated during his lifetime, and avidly collected by elite cognescenti in the Dutch Republic and abroad, ter Brugghen executed a dazzling variety of paintings, ranging from Bible subjects and saints, to fascinating mythological images, as well as scenes of daily life, including musicians. Although his knowledge of paintings by Caravaggio that he had seen during his early sojourn in Rome always remained acute, these experiences were continually tempered by his awareness of older Northern European artistic traditions and conventions, with the result that ter Brugghen created pictures whose subject matter and style are fascinating, and at times, unique. Until his untimely death in August of 2003, Leonard J. Slatkes was Distinguished Professor of Art History at Queens College of the City University of New York, NY. He was an internationally renowned expert on the art of the Dutch Caravaggisti, to whom he had devoted many essays, books, and exhibition catalogues. Slatkes had begun conducting research on ter Brugghen's paintings in the 1960's, with the expectation of eventually publishing a new monograph on the artist. Wayne Franits, a former student of Slatkes's, is currently Professor of Fine Arts at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. He has authored numerous publications on seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish art.
