Book excerpt: La creación (o adaptación) de instrumentos de medida es una necesidad frecuente en la investigación psicológica, educativa, sociológica, etc. Esta monograma trata de ser una guía útil para los que pretenden crear una escala tipo-likert para la medida de actitudes (o de otros rasgos afines) y para todos aquellos que, en general, necesitan familiarizarse con el proceso de construcción de escalas con el fin de adaptarlas, revisarlas, valorarlas, etc. Para situar estas escalas en su contexto, se dedica un primer capítulo introductorio a los tipos de escalas que podemos considerar clásicos. En el segundo capítulo la exposición se centra ya exclusivamente en las escalas típo-Likert. La secuencia de contenidos reproduce el proceso completo de construcción, desde las fases iniciales de elaboración, redacción y análisis de items hasta el análisis de fiabilidad y de validez de la escala. Cada fase del proceso se ejemplifica e ilustra, y aquéllas que incorporan como parte sustancial el análisis estadístico de datos van acompañadas de una sección sobre cómo utilizar el programa SPSS con este fin.

If the Internet is a new world of social behavior it is also a new world for those who study social behavior. This volume is a compendium of essays and research reports representing how researchers are thinking about the social processes of electronic communication and its effects in society. Taken together, the chapters comprise a first gathering of social psychological research on electronic communication and the Internet. The authors of these chapters work in different disciplines and have different goals, research methods, and styles. For some, the emergence and use of new technologies represent a new perspective on social and behavioral processes of longstanding interest in their disciplines. Others want to draw on social science theories to understand technology. A third group holds to a more activist program, seeking guidance through research to improve social interventions using technology in domains such as education, mental health, and work productivity. It is first of all a comprehensive but concise text that covers the recently developed and widely applicable methods of qualitative choice analysis, illustrating the general theory through simulation models of automobile demand and use. It is also a detailed study of automobile demand and use, presenting forecasts based on these powerful new techniques. The book develops the general principles that underlie qualitative choice models that are now being applied in numerous fields in addition to transportation, such as housing, labor, energy, communications, and criminology. The general form, derivation, and estimation of qualitative choice models are explained, and the major models - logit, probit, and GEV - are discussed in detail. And continuous/discrete models are introduced. In these, qualitative choice methods and standard regression techniques are combined to analyze situations that neither alone can accurately forecast. Summarizing previous research on auto demand, the book shows how qualitative choice methods can be used by applying them to specific auto-related decisions as the aggregate of individuals' choices. The simulation model that is constructed is a significant improvement over older models, and should prove more useful to agencies and organizations requiring accurate forecasting of auto demand and use for planning and policy development. The book concludes with an actual case study based on a model designed for the investigations of the California Energy Commission.
