Book An Irish Bishop in Penal Times

Download or read book An Irish Bishop in Penal Times written by Patrick Fagan and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the life of an Irish Franciscan friar and bishop of the early eighteenth century. Against a background of periodic repression of catholics by the authorities, Sylvester Lloyd emerges as a kind of Pimpernel figure, gravely in cahoots with the Jacobite plotters on the Continent and plying them continually with intelligence reports on the current scene as he flits between Ireland, Britain and the Continent. Lloyd's letters and reports, culled from the Stuart Papers at Windsor Castle, present us with new insights into events over the quarter of a century from 1723 to 1747 and serve to illumine a period of Irish history which hitherto has been neglected by historians.

Book Irish Jesuits in Penal Times 1695 1811

Download or read book Irish Jesuits in Penal Times 1695 1811 written by Thomas J Morrissey and published by Messenger Publications. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of the Irish Jesuits from 1695 to 1811 is concerned with those who lived and worked in Dublin and, in particular, with a central figure, the quite remarkable educationalist and pastor, Thomas Betagh. As we shall see, two other Jesuits also played a large part in the life of Betagh: John Austin, who was his teacher and subsequently a colleague, and James Philip Mulcaile, who was a friend, colleague and near contemporary. The life and work of Betagh can only be understood in the context of his time: not only the history of Ireland in the eighteenth century, but also the political, cultural and religious developments in western Europe.

Book The Catholics of Ireland Under the Penal Laws in the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Catholics of Ireland Under the Penal Laws in the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Patrick Francis Moran and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholics of Ireland Under the Penal Laws in the Eighteenth Century An endeavour is made in the following pages to sketch very briefly the condition of the Catholics of Ireland under the Penal Laws in the eighteenth century. The first Chapter is the substance of an article that appeared in the Dublin Review as far back as January, 1882. The subject was continued in a series of papers in the Australasian Catholic Record, published in Sydney, commencing in 1895. At the request of the Catholic Truth Society, those papers now appear in their present form. Perhaps no one will be more convinced than the writer, that the sketch here presented is far from being perfect or complete. The subject matter, however, cannot fail to commend the little volume to those readers who rejoice in the triumphs of religion. Never has a whole nation suffered more for the Faith than Ireland; and nowhere has fidelity to God and loyalty to the Holy See, amid unparalleled sufferings and national humiliations, achieved more glorious victories or been crowned with happier results. Those victories of the Faith and those grand religious results are a priceless heritage, of which the Irish race at home and abroad is justly proud at the present day. Every tradition of those times of suffering, and every record of the heroism of Ireland's martyrs, cannot but be acceptable to those who have at heart the success of the great work of religion in which the Catholic Truth Society is engaged.
