Book An Investigation of Fluidized Bed Scaling Relationships

Download or read book An Investigation of Fluidized Bed Scaling Relationships written by Joel Raymond Schroeder and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to validate fluidized bed scaling relationships using spectral analysis of pressure fluctuations. Static pressure fluctuations are measured in two cold bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) models, a bubbling fluidized bed combustor, and a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) model. A visual comparison of the pressure fluctuation spectral analysis is used to confirm similitude between fluidized beds. The Bode and power spectral density plots of BFB models simulating a BFB combustor do not provide conclusive evidence of similitude between the beds. An argument is presented to relax the ratio of bed diameter and particle diameter when scaling fluidized beds of sufficient bed diameter, thus allowing much greater freedom when scaling fluidized beds than previous methods. A sensitivity study is conducted to investigate the importance of the independent fluidized bed operation parameters. In addition, the effect of L-valve height on L-valve solids flow rate and the effect of the coefficient of restitution of the top plate and fluidizing particles on mass flux are examined.

Book Scaling of Pressurized Fluidized Beds

Download or read book Scaling of Pressurized Fluidized Beds written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project has two primary objectives. The first is to verify a set of hydrodynamic scaling relationships for commercial pressurized fluidized bed combustors (PFBC). The second objective is to investigate solids mixing in pressurized bubbling fluidized beds. American Electric Power's (AEP) Tidd combined-cycle demonstration plant will provide time-varying pressure drop data to serve as the basis for the scaling verification. The verification will involve demonstrating that a properly scaled cold model and the Tidd PFBC exhibit hydrodynamically similar behavior. An important issue in PFBC design is the spacing of fuel feed ports. The feed spacing is dictated by the fuel distribution and the mixing characteristics within the bed. After completing the scaling verification, the cold model will be used to study the characteristics of PFBCs. A thermal tracer technique will be utilized to study mixing both near the fuel feed region and in the far field. The results allow the coal feed and distributor to be designed for optimal heating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1970s there has been an explosion of industrial and academic interest in circulating fluidized beds. In part, the attention has arisen due to the environmental advantages associated with CFB (circulating . fluidized bed) combustion systems, the incorporation of riser reactors employing cir culating fluidized bed technology in petroleum refineries for fluid catalytic cracking and, to a lesser extent, the successes of CFB technology for calcina tion reactions and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In part, it was also the case that too much attention had been devoted to bubbling fluidized beds and it was time to move on to more complex and more advantageous regime,S of operation. Since 1980 a number of CFB processes have been commercialized. There have been five successful International Circulating Fluidized Bed Confer ences beginning in 1985, the most recent taking place in Beijing in May 1996. In addition, we have witnessed a host of other papers on CFB funda mentals and applications in journals and other archival publications. There have also been several review papers and books on specific CFB topics. However, there has been no comprehensive book reviewing the field and attempting to provide an overview of both fundamentals and applications. The purpose of this book is to fill this vacuum.

Book Bench scale Two dimensional Fluidized Bed Hydrodynamics and Struvite Growth Studies

Download or read book Bench scale Two dimensional Fluidized Bed Hydrodynamics and Struvite Growth Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bench-scale, two-dimensional multi-compartmentalized fluidized reactor was designed and studies of hydrodynamic behavior of fluidization of struvite pellets were performed. Also size growth distribution tests were analyzed qualitatively. The study validated a previously-proposed theory, concerning the relationship between dynamic pressure drop and upflow velocity as well the experimental protocol to determine the minimum fluidization velocity. Findings indicated that the mixture of two-sized particles would behave rather independently of each other, before the bed expansion. It was suggested that bed height measurement could be another promising method to pinpoint minimum fluidization velocity as there is a sharp bed surface "waking episode" during the process of a packed bed being gradually fluidized. Bed expansion equations for the prediction of void fraction as a function of superficial upflow velocity or vice versa, have been established for 4 groups of monosize particles, as well as two mixtures of two-sized particles. The equation constants did not agree well with previously established ones. The two layers of segregated mixture bed had congruent linear relationships between the logarithmic void fraction and logarithmic upflow velocity. It was found that a mixture does not always go through segregation, but only when the size difference is large enough. Size growth distribution tests were performed under different hydrodynamic configurations as well as seeding conditions. Conclusions can be made that a bed with uniformly- distributed particle void fractions and higher mixing energy input (upflow velocity), normally has better performance of struvite growth in size.
