These sermons were rewritten and published in the Presbyterian Journal of Philadelphia. Favorable notice having been accorded these articles, I was led to continue them by writing introductory articles to the other books of the New Testament for the same paper. The kind encouragement and advice of Professor Warfield, under whose able instruction in Allegheny Seminary I was permitted to study for four years, led me to think of rewriting the whole series with the view of publishing them in book form when completed. As my ministry progressed, I was also impressed with the need of having a popular treatise on New Testament Introduction for uses of instruction among the people of my charge. These things led me on in my work until it is now completed. To the wise council and timely criticisms of Dr. Warfield I am deeply indebted, for through the years that have elapsed since the inception of this work, he has repeatedly encouraged me. His 'Zeit-schrift' also presents valuable critical investigations by the editor himself, Professor Holtzmann, and others, all tending to illustrate the Christian Scriptures. Mangold supplies useful additions to Bleek's ' Introduction.' Professor Reuss's recent publications on the New Testament are somewhat disappointing, savouring as they do of the Vermittelungs-Theologie, and influenced to some extent by a reactionary spirit towards the Tubingen school. Though this school as represented by Baur and Schwegler has carried its speculations too far, the important advance it has made in the criticism of the New Testament cannot be reversed. Modified it may be; but its mark upon early Christian literature is deep and permanent. In correcting its excesses moderation must be carefully preserved, for examples of backwardism are usually weak. A few faults of the 'Tendenz-Kritik' leave its basis secure.
