This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Pawnee Archeology The Pawnee have been known to white men since, probably, 1541, and certainly since 1673. They were the most numerous and power ful of the tribes constituting the Caddoan linguistic stock and one of the most important of the entire Plains area. Since the earliest definite historic mention of them they have been resident in Ne braska and the extreme northern portion of Kansas, particularly on the Loup, Platte, and Republican Rivers. As a tribe they were always friendly to the Europeans and later to the Americans, ren dering invaluable aid as scouts in the Indian troubles on the Plains during the middle half of the nineteenth century; and that despite the half-hearted and tardy attentions that too often characterized the Government's relations with them. The tribe has been variously described by early explorers, mission aries, fur traders, Army officers, and travelers, many of whom left very valuable and worth-while accounts concerning them in their native habitat in the Loup and Platte Valleys. In more recent years, on their reservation in Oklahoma, they have been studied by linguists and ethnologists, though much of this material is still unpublished. Of outstanding note among the available treatises in this field is the work of Dunbar in general ethnology, of Dorsey in mythology, of Grinnell in folk-tales, and of Murie in social and political organiza tion. Archeological remains, surprisingly rich and numerous at many of the old village sites formerly occupied by the tribe, have received but little systematic attention up to the present, save for the excellent beginnings made by a few local collectors. Yet it is this latter, long-neglected field of research which must come to be more and more drawn upon for information regarding this fast-van ishing tribe and its native culture. Both fieldwork and writ ing came to a halt, the latter to be resumed in 1945. Shortly came further interruption when the Smithsonian Institution entered into an agreement with the National Park Service to participate in the archeological salvage work linked with the post-war Federal water control program. The writer was detailed by the National Museum for four summers and intermittently otherwise to the newly organized River Basin Surveys and was assigned the task Of organizing and setting in motion the salvage program in the Missouri Basin. Not until 1950 was there again opportunity for resuming the Kansas report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking Our Past: An Introduction to North American Archaeology offers an up-to-date and engaging introduction to North America's past that also illustrates contemporary archaeological practice. The authors include examples from both North American prehistory and history--drawn from academic archaeology and Cultural Resource Management (CRM)--in order to provide a broad overview of how the continent was settled, what archaeologists have learned about life across the North American culture areas, and how current archaeologists research our past. Chapters are enhanced by case studies written especially for this book by the original researchers. Through these case studies readers gain familiarity with particular projects and insight into what archaeologists actually do. In addition, the authors cover such important ethical issues as respecting and working with descendant populations and the need for archaeological stewardship. They also provide valuable information about contemporary practice and careers in archaeology. An exceptional resource, Seeking Our Past incorporates numerous pedagogical aids including: * Three types of text boxes: "Faces in Archaeology" offer profiles of working archaeologists; "Issues and Debates" address ethical concerns and scholarly debates; and "Clues to the Past" examine specific artifacts or features in detail * Maps of regions and cultures discussed in the text * Chapter summaries featuring bulleted lists of major points * Suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter and discussion questions after each case study * An extensive glossary * An Instructor's Manual, available to adopters * Student CD including additional sections; more case studies, "Issues and Debates" boxes, and "Faces in Archaeology" profiles; full-color illustrations; a complete list of references; a study guide (with questions and quizzes); and an "Exploring Further" section with links to related websites and recommendations of sites and museums to visit
