Book The Evolution of Mine Surveying Instruments

Download or read book The Evolution of Mine Surveying Instruments written by Dunbar D. Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Mine-Surveying Instruments: Comprising the Original Paper of Mr. Scott on the Subject, Together With the Discussion Thereof, and Independent Contributions on the Subject This volume contains by no means the Whole of the discus sion elicited by the original paper of Mr. Scott. Additional contributions, received too late for introduction here, Will be found in the Transactions of the Institute, to Which. The reader is referred. This circumstance is, however, less to be lamented than if it had been possible, by a little longer delay, to close the Whole discussion, leaving nothing to be corrected or added. But the subject is one of those Which Will never be exhausted and there would be greater cause for regret if the issue of this volume should be construed by practising mine-surveyors and the designers or makers of surveying-instruments as an intima tion that further statements of fact, argument or criticism would not be welcomed by the Council of the Institute. I trust that such a misunderstanding Will be effectively prevented by the appearance in Vol. XXXI. Of the Transactions of the interesting additional papers of Mr. H. D. Hoskold, to say nothing of minor contributions on the subject, none of Which have been included ln the present volume. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Mine Surveying Methods and Their Applications to Mining Engineering These notes, problems and observations have been compiled in order to present in useful form for the student much that is today scattered among various texts on surveying and much from practical work that is not included in the average series of lectures on mine surveying. The surveying. Of lode and placer claims has been omitted, as the present methods of conducting such work are very differ ent from practice in underground work, and recent legislation has caused considerable confusion in all mineral surveys. Mine surveying is really one part of mining engineering. The purpose of these notes is to show how mine surveying enters into all the other phases of mining engineering and what meth ods are best adapted to each kind of work. Download or read book Coal Waste Impoundments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-02-07 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 11, 2000, a breakthrough of Martin County Coal Corporation's coal waste impoundment released 250 million gallons of slurry in near Inez, Kentucky. The 72-acre surface impoundment for coal processing waste materials broke through into a nearby underground coal mine. Although the spill caused no loss of human life, environmental damage was significant, and local water supplies were disrupted. This incident prompted Congress to request the National Research Council to examine ways to reduce the potential for similar accidents in the future. This book covers the engineering practices and standards for coal waste impoundments and ways to evaluate, improve, and monitor them; the accuracy of mine maps and ways to improve surveying and mapping of mines; and alternative technologies for coal slurry disposal and utilization. The book contains advice for multiple audiences, including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Office of Surface Mining, and other federal agencies; state and local policymakers and regulators; the coal industry and its consultants; and scientists and engineers.
