Book Interurban Knowledge Exchange in Southern and Eastern Europe 1870 1950

Download or read book Interurban Knowledge Exchange in Southern and Eastern Europe 1870 1950 written by Eszter Gantner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 1900 cities in Southern and Eastern Europe were persistently labeled "backward" and "delayed." Allegedly, they had no alternative but to follow the role model of the metropolises, of London, Paris or Vienna. This edited volume fundamentally questions this assumption. It shows that cities as diverse as Barcelona, Berdyansk, Budapest, Lviv, Milan, Moscow, Prague, Warsaw and Zagreb pursued their own agendas of modernization. In order to solve their pressing problems with respect to urban planning and public health, they searched for best practices abroad. The solutions they gleaned from other cities were eclectic to fit the specific needs of a given urban space and were thus often innovative. This applied urban knowledge was generated through interurban networks and multi-directional exchanges. Yet in the period around 1900, this transnational municipalism often clashed with the forging of urban and national identities, highlighting the tensions between the universal and the local. This interurban perspective helps to overcome nationalist perspectives in historiography as well as outdated notions of "center and periphery." This volume will appeal to scholars from a large number of disciplines, including urban historians, historians of Eastern and Southern Europe, historians of science and medicine, and scholars interested in transnational connections.

Download or read book South Shore written by William D. Middleton and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the new, expanded edition of William D. Middleton's much-admired book on the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad. In more than 250 photographs, maps, and schematic drawings, the rising and sinking fortunes of this technological triumph are chronicled from the first decade of the 20th century to the present day. Using the same technology that produced the electric street railway, the interurbans helped bridge the gap between the horse-and-buggy era in rural America to the modern age of paved highways and family automobiles. The Chicago South Shore Line is unique among the nearly 10,000 lines operating at the end of World War I, not because it didn't suffer the same triumphs and tragedies, but because it is the only one to have survived. It still provides electric transportation over precisely the same route it has served since the first decade of the 20th century. South Shore: The Last Interurban is essential reading for all those interested in rapid transit, railroads, railroad history, and the impact of America's last interurban.

Book Planning in Contemporary Africa

Download or read book Planning in Contemporary Africa written by Ambe J. Njoh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do authorities in post-colonial African states continue to employ European or Western planning models? What are the implications for different societal groups of adopting such models? Several decades following independence, this outstanding volume provides in-depth empirical research to uncover the answers to such questions. The book focuses in particular on Cameroon, the only African country to have been colonized by three different European powers: Germany, Britain and France. It discusses the nature of the state in peripheral capitalist countries and sets current planning and land use policies in their historical, colonial and post-colonial contexts. The author then proceeds to examine key planning issues such as housing, land ownership, sustainable development, environmental and waste management, transportation, infrastructure and gender. In addition to analyzing the impact of colonialism and imperialism on the built environment in Cameroon in particular and sub-Saharan Africa in general, the book also addresses global issues about urbanism and will be particularly relevant to those interested in planning, regional studies and development, and development geography.
