God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. 1. The apostle's design. 2. The subject stated. 3. (I.) The law and gospel both agree in having God for their author. 4 - 6. (II.) The difference as to their revelation consists 1. In the times of their promulgation. 7 - 9 2. The manner of it. 10, 11. 3. Persons employed. 12. (III.) Jewish prejudices against the gospel obviated, by attending to 13. 1. The just statement of God's revealing his will by his Son. 14. 2. Several excellencies attending the revelation itself. 15. 3. The concessions of the Jews. 16. 4. The dignity and glory of Christ the revealer, who is, 17 - 20. (1.) Heir of all. 21. (2.) By appointment. And 22 - 24. (3.) Maker of the world. 25 - 36. (IV.) Doctrinal and practical observations. 1. The apostle's grand design, throughout this epistle is, to engage the Hebrews to constancy and perseverance in their attachment to the gospel with its fundamental doctrines; and his main argument, for that purpose, is taken from the immediate author, the promised Messiah, the Son of God. Him, therefore, in this chapter, he describes at large, declaring what he is absolutely, in his person and offices, and comparatively, with respect to other ministerial revealers of the mind and will of God; principally insisting on his excellency and pre-eminence above angels. 2. A comparison being intended in these verses between the Mosaical law and the gospel, and particularly in reference to their revelation and institution, the apostle shews; I. Wherein the law and gospel in that view do both agree. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews, Vol. 2 of 4: With the Preliminary Exercitations Most expositors suppose this phrase, the last days, is a periphrasis of the times of the gospel. But it doth not appear that these are any where so called; nor where they ever known by that name among the Jews, upon whose principles the apostle proceeds. Some seasons, indeed, under the gospel, in reference to some churches, are called the last days, but the whole time of the gospel, absolutely, is no where so termed. It is therefore, the last days of the Jewish church and state which were then drawing to their final abolition, that are here intended. The apostle takes it for granted, that the Jewish church state did yet continue; and proves that it was drawing to its period, chap. Viii, ult. Having its present standing in the forbearance of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews, Vol. 4 of 4: With the Preliminary Exercitations The way and means of our interest in the sacrifice of Christ, is by faith only; now, even in this state, it often falls out, that true believers have a cmwcicnce, judging and condemning them for sin, no less than they had under the law; but this trouble of conscience doth not arise hence, that sin is not perfectly expiated by the sacrifice of Christ, but only from an apprehen sion, that they have not a due interest in that sacrifice, and its benefits. On the contrary, under the Old Testa ment, they questioned not their due interest in their sacs rifices, which depended on the performance of the rite! Belonging to them; but their consciences charged them wnththe guilt of sin, through an apprehension that their sacrifices could not perfectly expiate it; and this they found themselves led to by God's instituted repetition of them, which had not been done, if they could evcrs make the worshippers perfect; but in the use of them, and by their frequent repetition, they were taught to look continually to the great expiatory sacrifice, whose virtue was, laid up for them in the promise, whereby they had peace with God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Hebrews, Vol. 1 The observation, though commonplace, is true and important, that principles, in themselves not only innocent but laudable, may, from their being excessive in degree or ill-timed in their display, be, to a great extent, mischievous in their consequences. Excess of patriotism, not unfrequently, has not merely brought destruction on the patriot's head, but plunged his country into deeper calamities than those from which he was attempting to save it and some of the bloodiest persecutions of the Christian Church have originated in a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews, Vol. 2 of 2 It is proper to advertise the reader, that in the translation of the Epistle to the Hebrews, which is prefixed to the present vol ume, I have purposely avoided the usual division into chapters and verses, which is exhibited in our common editions of the Scrip tures. I have done this, because the sense is sometimes disturbed by it, and the reader is unwarily led to associate things together, in a manner which the writer of the epistle never intended. Some Jewish zealot, who appears to have been a man of considerable property and influence, a man Of parts and address, an eloquent speaker, a philosopher, and perhaps a Sadducee, formeda party in Opposition to the apostle, 'professing to teach them a mo1e refined system Of Christian philoso phy, derived from ancient Hebrew traditions, deny ing the resurrection Of the dead, and relaxing the Obligations Of Ch1istian morality. This dangerous teacher succeeded but too well in alienating the minds of many Of the giddy and volatile Corinthians from the simple and Offensive truths, and from the self-denying precepts Of the gospel, as well as from their veneration and affection for their first teacher; while others adhered to the apostle's doctrine, and remained strongly attached to his person and au thority. Thus the church was divided into two parties, one of which ranged themselves under the standard Of the false apostle, and thought and spoke meanly Of the doctrine and the authority of Paul; while the wiser and better part Of the society ad hered to their first teacher, and, in their zeal to sup.
