Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Silicon (Si) has many beneficial effects on plants. Its cycling in terrestrial ecosystems plays a vital role in the global biogeochemical cycle. Temperate tree species differ greatly in their capacity to accumulate Si, but the implications for such variations for soil biogenic silica (BSi) concentration remains poorly understood. This study aims to (i) explain the effect of tree species on soil BSi by assessing leaf and soil BSi in 19 temperate tree species; (ii) study the effects of species and functional diversity on leaf and soil BSi; and (iii) link leaf Si to plant functional traits. The study was conducted at the International Diversity Experiment Network with Trees (IDENT) plantation in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, QC. The plantation included 19 monocultures and 35 mixed plots replicated in four blocks. Soils were sampled in May of 2019, and leaves in August of 2019. Leaf Si and nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Mn), and soil BSi and soil parameters (pH and Mehlich P, K, Ca, Mg and Mn) were assessed. Soil BSi and leaf Si were extracted with NaOH, and determined by spectrophotometry. For hardwoods, soil BSi concentration was higher under Si accumulating species (i.e., maples) and lower under Si excluders (i.e., yellow birch), and increased with the proportion of maples in the plots. The opposite trend was observed for conifer species. Soil BSi concentration was significantly correlated with soil potassium (K) and phosphorous (P). However, species richness and functional diversity were not correlated with soil BSi concentration. Leaf Si concentration was consistently high in shade-tolerant species and was negatively correlated with litter carbon and growth rate, suggesting a beneficial role of Si in shade tolerant trees. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of tree species and some soil parameters for controlling soil BSi concentration and therefore Si cycle in temperate forests. The large variability of Si concentrations in soil and leaves and their relation to soil nutrients and plant traits suggest that Si plays an important role in a variety of ecological processes in forest ecosystems"--

Book excerpt: Increasing stress is being placed on the environment by man's activities including those of changing land usage for increased food production and the release of carbon dioxide due to fossil fuel combustion. Further stresses may occur if agricultural practice is modified by using plant products for liquid fuels. Rational management of these activities can only occur if there is a thorough under standing of the biogeochemical cycles of the major plant nutrients, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus. A vital part of this understanding concerns the interactions between these cycles, where in various limiting processes the cycle of one element exerts a controlling influence over the cycle of one or more of the other elements. A well known example of this interaction is the role of sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus as limiting factors in plant growth i.e. carbon uptake by the biosphere. A related effect is the suggested increase in nitrogen fixation by legumes due to CO2 enrichment in the atmosphere. Other interactions occur during the mineralisation of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus associated with the release of organic carbon during the decay of plant material and between the carbon substrate and mineral forms of nitrogen and sulfur during denitrification and bacterial sulfate reduction. Increased sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions to the atmosphere in some areas are causing acid rain which appears to be affecting the productivity of some land and aquatic ecosystems.
