Book An Experimental Validation of the SIMBAD Gun Dynamics Simulation Package for Flexible Saboted Long Rod Projectiles

Download or read book An Experimental Validation of the SIMBAD Gun Dynamics Simulation Package for Flexible Saboted Long Rod Projectiles written by J. B. Hoyle and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental firing programme has been carried out using the RMCS 30mm Air Powered Gun to study the flexing of saboted long rod penetrators in-bore. A number of special two piece projectiles were developed, each with as nearly as possible the same mass, position of centre of gravity, pitch inertia, and band spacing, but with different rod diameters. A rigid one piece projectile was also developed, that had the same physical properties and band spacings. A refined technique for measuring the in-bore motion of the shot was introduced into the experimental facility. This technique enabled the pitch and yaw motion of the front end of the rod to be measured, thus producing data that could be directly compared with theoretical simulations. The technique made use of an optical displacement transducer mounted perpendicular to and down range from the muzzle. A light beam from this transducer was directed on to a mirror on the front of the projectile via a circular mirror in the path of the shot. This latter mirror was formed by stretching a thin aluminised membrane over an annulus, through which the projectile passed without damage. The displacement of the returning light beam from the projectile was then measured by the transducer, from which shot pitch and yaw motions could be calculated. Accurate measurement of the barrel profile was found to be necessary for the simulation work. This was achieved by pushing the rigid one piece shot slowly down the barrel, whilst measuring its pitch angle. The resulting data was then analysed to remove the gravity droop component, thus producing the barrel bend.

Book Validation of the U S Army Research Laboratory s Gun Dynamics Simulation Codes for Prototype Kinetic Energy

Download or read book Validation of the U S Army Research Laboratory s Gun Dynamics Simulation Codes for Prototype Kinetic Energy written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report compares a priori gun-projectile dynamic simulations to experimental ballistic jump test data for seven 120-mm prototype kinetic energy (KE) projectiles and describes the methodology used for the comparison. The projectiles contain significant differences in their charge, subprojectile, and sabot designs that span the design parameters encountered in KE cartridge development. In such tests, four or more sets of orthogonal radiograph images (x-rays), which are typically used to characterize the state of the projectile at muzzle exit, can be directly compared to predictions from ARL's gun-projectile dynamic simulation (GPDS) codes. The results from these comparisons show that the GPDS codes were able to predict the ballistic experimental results except for the transverse center-of-gravity jump velocity in two cases. For the two cases, the difference in predicted and experiment is shown to occur when a high average rate is seen at the muzzle exit and is probably due to the timing error associated with muzzle exit.

Book Use of the SIMBAD Gun Dynamics Code for Modelling the In Bore Dynamics of EM Launchers

Download or read book Use of the SIMBAD Gun Dynamics Code for Modelling the In Bore Dynamics of EM Launchers written by D. W. Lodge and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generic SIMBAD models of various Electro-Magnetic (EM) launchers have been used in the UK for studying model the in-bore phase and launch accuracy issues of such systems. Although many of features of the EM environment are not modelled with any degree of complexity, SIMBAD still provides a useful tool for investigating some of the dominant material and geometric influences on the in-bore dynamics and launch accuracy. Modifications to the SIMBAD code allowed for the simulation of asymmetrical electro-magnetic forces acting on the projectile. Other modifications allowed for the simulation of some of the time varying asymmetries in the forces on the projectile. These have demonstrated that there may be additional EM influences contributing to in-bore projectile balloting. Comparative performance data was produced for three shot designs (U4, U7 and U9 projectiles) simulated being fired from the 90 mm IAP and Task C launchers, and highlighted their typical in-bore performance characteristics. Transverse accelerations on the projectiles showed typical peak values of 6,000 g. higher values and degradation in projectile performance was demonstrated due to increasing wear and distortion in the launcher's core when experimental bore straightness and wear were included. Initial values for projectile exit conditions from the launchers were produced, which demonstrated increased sensitivity of shot jump, pitch and pitch rate in the vertical plane and some important differences between projectile designs.

Book Replica Modeling of the Launch and Flight Dynamics of Projectiles

Download or read book Replica Modeling of the Launch and Flight Dynamics of Projectiles written by E. M. Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program has been conducted to determine the limits of applicability of replica model scaling of gun systems. A one-third scale model of the 105mm, M68 tank gun and the M392 kinetic energy projectile are tested. Data are taken on the interior ballistics, muzzle blast, sabot discard dynamics, and exterior ballistics of the model. Comparison of the test results with available information on the full scale system shows that, as anticipated, accurate reproduction of the interior and exterior ballistics is achieved; however, while gross similarity in the sabot discard is observed, the magnitude of the launch disturbance in the two systems is not identical. Book Design for Control of Projectile Flight Characteristics

Download or read book Design for Control of Projectile Flight Characteristics written by United States. Army Materiel Command and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents a general survey of the principal factors affecting the flight of projectiles, and describes the methods commonly used for predicting and influencing the flight performance. The coefficients which characterize the aerodynamic forces and moments of a moving body are identified, methods for determining the coefficients applicable to a projectile having a given shape and center of gravity location are described, and the coefficients of a number of projectiles and projectile shapes are given. The use of aerodynamic coefficients in predicting stability, range and accuracy is described. The effects of variations in projectile shape and center of gravity location on range, accuracy and lethality are discussed. Some material on prototype testing and the effects of round-to-round variations in production lots is presented.

Book The Dynamics of Projectiles Launched by a Two Stage Light Gas Gun

Download or read book The Dynamics of Projectiles Launched by a Two Stage Light Gas Gun written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projectiles launched at hypervelocities at the ballistic ranges of Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) are subject to extreme loads of over 100,000 g's and occasionally fail. The ultimate material strength, in practice, limits the maximum speed to which the projectile can be launched and still remain intact. The projectiles are constructed from a variety of materials, including metals, plastics, and composites, and may undergo large viscoplastic deformations dependent on the strain rate. An understanding of the dynamics of the projectile and its interaction with the light-gas and barrel wall could lead to improved projectile designs and to procedures to reduce the possibility of model failure without degrading the overall performance of the gas gun. This Phase I effort addresses the need for an analytical tool to simulate accurately the projectile dynamic stresses. Under this study, a prototype finite element code has been developed and tested for axisymmetric projectiles to assess the feasibility of conducting realistic simulations.
