Book excerpt: One of these approaches is the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, TRC, believed to provide a veritable platform for victims and perpetrators alike, to have a voice that would enable them to come to terms with the horrifying past. In Africa, TRCs as strategies for coming to terms with the past in Africa came into prominence following the example of South Africa after the end of apartheid in 1994. Since then, TRCs have been set up in Rwanda and Sierra Leone, while one has been proposed for Liberia.

Book A Window of Opportunity The Truth and Reconciliation Commission s Impact on the Transformation of Gender Inequality in Sierra Leone

Download or read book A Window of Opportunity The Truth and Reconciliation Commission s Impact on the Transformation of Gender Inequality in Sierra Leone written by Elena Stuke and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-18 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Gender Studies, grade: 1,7, University of Bayreuth, course: Social and Political Processes in Africa and Beyond: Post-conflict Societies in Africa, language: English, abstract: This term paper analysis the transitional justice mechanism of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Sierra Leone with regard to its impact on gender equality in the country. It analyzes the gender-transformative potential of the Commission, examines the measures taken by the government to implement the Commission's recommendations on gender equality and analyzes the changes that have been achieved with regard to gender equality in Sierra Leone. While the trials of the Sierra Leone Special Court have led to a number of groundbreaking legal developments that have significantly impacted international gender justice the Court is believed to not have offered much potential for the transformation of gender relations due to "the absence of a reparations mandate and the limited opportunities for victims to participate in proceedings" (Williams and Opdam 2017, 1286). Therefore, this analysis focuses on the TRC. It will begin with a brief account of the situation of women in pre-conflict Sierra Leone as well as during the conflict to make the case for the need for a transformation of gender relations. This will be followed by an analysis of the gender-transformative potential of the TRC and a subsequent examination of the measures taken by the government to implement the TRC's recommendations on gender equality. Subsequently, the changes that have been achieved with regard to gender equality in Sierra Leone will be examined. Finally, the position of women in contemporary Sierra Leone will be outlined, followed by a brief presentation of missed opportunities in the promotion of gender equality.

Book Religion Tradition and Restorative Justice in Sierra Leone

Download or read book Religion Tradition and Restorative Justice in Sierra Leone written by Lyn S. Graybill and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking study of post-conflict Sierra Leone, Lyn Graybill examines the ways in which both religion and local tradition supported restorative justice initiatives such as the national Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and village-level Fambul Tok ceremonies. Through her interviews with Christian and Muslim leaders of the Inter-Religious Council, Graybill uncovers a rich trove of perspectives about the meaning of reconciliation, the role of acknowledgment, and the significance of forgiveness. Through an abundance of polling data and her review of traditional practices among the various ethnic groups, Graybill also shows that these perspectives of religious leaders did not at all conflict with the opinions of the local population, whose preferences for restorative justice over retributive justice were compatible with traditional values that prioritized reconciliation over punishment. These local sentiments, however, were at odds with the international community's preference for retributive justice, as embodied in the Special Court for Sierra Leone, which ran concurrently with the TRC. Graybill warns that with the dominance of the International Criminal Court in Africa—there are currently eighteen pending cases in eight countries—local preferences may continue to be sidelined in favor of prosecutions. She argues that the international community is risking the loss of its most valuable assets in post-conflict peacebuilding by pushing aside religious and traditional values of reconciliation in favor of Western legal norms.
