The problem has elicited a variety of societal and public policy responses over the years, concomitant with fluctuations in the economy and changes in the demographics of and attitudes toward poor and disenfranchised citizens. In recent decades, federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the philanthropic community have worked hard to develop and implement programs to solve the challenges of homelessness, and progress has been made. However, much more remains to be done. Importantly, the results of various efforts, and especially the efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans in recent years, have shown that the problem of homelessness can be successfully addressed. Although a number of programs have been developed to meet the needs of persons experiencing homelessness, this report focuses on one particular type of intervention: permanent supportive housing (PSH). Permanent Supportive Housing focuses on the impact of PSH on health care outcomes and its cost-effectiveness. The report also addresses policy and program barriers that affect the ability to bring the PSH and other housing models to scale to address housing and health care needs.

Book Researching Resilience

Download or read book Researching Resilience written by Linda Liebenberg and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-10-10 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While categorization has always been one of the primary focuses of the social sciences, recent trends within these disciplines have tended to categorize various behaviours as disorders. Researching Resilience challenges this tendency to pathologize, and marks a profound shift in research methods from the study of disorder to the study of well-being. This collection assembles qualitative and quantitative studies from a diverse group of scholars and disciplines, stressing the importance of studying the strength and resilience of youth who are faced with adversity. Working with youth in a variety of cultures and contexts, the contributors provide critically astute analyses of existing scholarship as well as rigorous methods for conducting resilience research in less Eurocentric and more culturally sensitive ways. An important collection, Researching Resilience is unique in approaching interventions with youth specifically from the point of view of research methods and challenges.

  • Author : David Canter
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-11-07
  • ISBN : 0429767218
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Interviewing and Deception written by David Canter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume brings together a unique range of previously unpublished studies that explore the psychological processes involved in interviewing, statement validation, detecting deception and the use of expert witnesses for the examination of such processes. One major challenge of any police enquiry is to filter out the distortions in the collection, collation and employment of the information on which all subsequent actions rely. These distortions may be produced by poor witness recall, deliberate obfuscation and deception, professional negligence or as a product of a variety of communication problems. The contributors to the volume tackle these and many related issues. Recent developments in our understanding of the investigative interview process are covered in a number of insightful studies by leading researchers, combining academic rigour with direct practical relevance. The wide range of topics covered in this volume will be of value and interest to all students of crime and its investigation as well as those who have a broader interest in interviewing and the assessment of information from naturally occurring accounts. Social scientists and those psychologists concerned to develop their understanding of accounts of crime will find the volume of particular utility, as will all those in law enforcement who wish to see an improvement in these crucial aspects of all criminal investigations.
