Book excerpt: An important challenge to what currently masquerades as conventional wisdom regarding the teaching of writing. There seems to be widespread agreement that—when it comes to the writing skills of college students—we are in the midst of a crisis. In Why They Can't Write, John Warner, who taught writing at the college level for two decades, argues that the problem isn't caused by a lack of rigor, or smartphones, or some generational character defect. Instead, he asserts, we're teaching writing wrong. Warner blames this on decades of educational reform rooted in standardization, assessments, and accountability. We have done no more, Warner argues, than conditioned students to perform "writing-related simulations," which pass temporary muster but do little to help students develop their writing abilities. This style of teaching has made students passive and disengaged. Worse yet, it hasn't prepared them for writing in the college classroom. Rather than making choices and thinking critically, as writers must, undergraduates simply follow the rules—such as the five-paragraph essay—designed to help them pass these high-stakes assessments. In Why They Can't Write, Warner has crafted both a diagnosis for what ails us and a blueprint for fixing a broken system. Combining current knowledge of what works in teaching and learning with the most enduring philosophies of classical education, this book challenges readers to develop the skills, attitudes, knowledge, and habits of mind of strong writers.

  • Author : Michael S. Roth
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2014-05-28

Download or read book Beyond the University written by Michael S. Roth and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contentious debates over the benefits—or drawbacks—of a liberal education are as old as America itself. From Benjamin Franklin to the Internet pundits, critics of higher education have attacked its irrelevance and elitism—often calling for more vocational instruction. Thomas Jefferson, by contrast, believed that nurturing a student’s capacity for lifelong learning was useful for science and commerce while also being essential for democracy. In this provocative contribution to the disputes, university president Michael S. Roth focuses on important moments and seminal thinkers in America’s long-running argument over vocational vs. liberal education. Conflicting streams of thought flow through American intellectual history: W. E. B. DuBois’s humanistic principles of pedagogy for newly emancipated slaves developed in opposition to Booker T. Washington’s educational utilitarianism, for example. Jane Addams’s emphasis on the cultivation of empathy and John Dewey’s calls for education as civic engagement were rejected as impractical by those who aimed to train students for particular economic tasks. Roth explores these arguments (and more), considers the state of higher education today, and concludes with a stirring plea for the kind of education that has, since the founding of the nation, cultivated individual freedom, promulgated civic virtue, and instilled hope for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on Education It has long been my intention to publish an essay on education, as my last work. In the meantime, men of learning have been engaged, from the most disinterested motives, in the same field. They have done much good, for which they have received the thanks of every true friend of our common country. This essay will not, noris it intended, to supersede the use of what others have heretofore published on the same subject. But, although all that has been published on education is valuable, yet the whole mass is too voluminous for common readers. A condensation of much that has appeared into a small space, seemed to the author to be a desideratum, and that is all that this small volume pretends to be. It has been my object to condense as much useful matter as possible into a small compass, adapting it to the age in which we live, and to the republican institutions of our country. It is quite common for authors to name the authorities from which they have drawn their information. Having read almost every work on education as soon as it was published, during the last forty years, I have not retained the books themselves, nor any extracts from them. Having thrown the ingredients into my own mental crucible, I have, from the liquid mass, produced this essay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education: An Essay and Other Selections Progress in educational theory has been so rapid in recent years, and changes in school-room practice have been made with such frequency, that many parents and teachers have failed to grasp the meaning of the new movements in education. This is not a matter for blame; it is characteristic of any period of transition such as ours. As we have become conscious of the need of modifications in our school system to meet changing social conditions, we have attempted a welding of new ideals to old traditions, with the inevitable result that not a little waste and confusion have attended the administration of our schools. Book excerpt: First published in 1951. This book examines the challenges and difficulties that schools may face when it comes to the teaching of children with special needs. Book Feel Bad Education

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alfie Kohn
  • Publisher : Beacon Press
  • Release : 2011-04-05
  • ISBN : 0807001414
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Feel Bad Education written by Alfie Kohn and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mind-opening writing on what kids need from school, from one of education’s most outspoken voices Almost no writer on schools asks us to question our fundamental assumptions about education and motivation as boldly as Alfie Kohn. The Washington Post says that “teachers and parents who encounter Kohn and his thoughts come away transfixed, ready to change their schools.” And Time magazine has called him “perhaps the country’s most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades [and] test scores.” Here is challenging and entertaining writing on where we should go in American education, in Alfie Kohn’s unmistakable voice. He argues in the title essay with those who think that high standards mean joylessness in the classroom. He reflects thoughtfully on the question “Why Self-Discipline Is Overrated.” And in an essay for the New York Times, which generated enormous response, he warns against the dangers of both punishing and praising children for what they do instead of parenting “unconditionally.” Whether he’s talking about school policy or the psychology of motivation, Kohn gives us wonderfully provocative—and utterly serious—food for thought. This new book will be greeted with enthusiasm by his many readers, and by teachers and parents seeking a refreshing perspective on today’s debates about kids and schools.
