Book excerpt: Combining the literary sensibility of David Quammen with the scientific rigor of Stephen Jay Gould, Carl Zimmer reveals the power, danger, and beauty of the surprising creatures who dominate the earth: parasites. For centuries, parasites have lived in nightmares, horror stories, and the darkest shadows of science. In Parasite Rex, Carl Zimmer takes readers on a fantastic voyage into the secret universe of these extraordinary life-forms—which are not only among the most highly evolved on Earth, but make up the majority of life’s diversity. Traveling from the steamy jungles of Costa Rica to the parasite-riddled war zone of southern Sudan, Zimmer introduces an array of amazing creatures that invade their hosts, prey on them from within, and control their behavior. He also vividly describes parasites that can change DNA, rewire the brain, make men more distrustful and women more outgoing, and turn hosts into the living dead. This comprehensive, gracefully written book brings parasites out into the open and uncovers what they can teach us all about the most fundamental survival tactics in the universe—the laws of Parasite Rex.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Minute Animal Parasites, or Unseen Foes in the Animal World The selection of subject-matter, naturally, has presented some difficulty, but so far as possible that side of the science of Protozoology, that comes in direct contact with human life and needs, has been chosen in preference to that which deals with the more theoretical and speculative side. Diseases of man, cattle, horses, poultry, game, fish, and bees, due to parasitic Protozoa, thus occupy a large pro portion of the book. Book Parasites and the Behavior of Animals

Download or read book Parasites and the Behavior of Animals written by Janice Moore and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-31 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a parasite invades an ant, does the ant behave like other ants? Maybe not-and if it doesn't, who, if anyone, benefits from the altered behaviors? The parasite? The ant? Parasites and the Behavior of Animals shows that parasite-induced behavioral alterations are more common than we might realize, and it places these alterations in an evolutionary and ecological context. Emphasizing eukaryotic parasites, the book examines the adaptive nature of behavioral changes associated with parasitism, exploring the effects of these changes on parasite transmission, parasite avoidance, and the fitness of both host and parasite. The behavioral changes and their effects are not always straightforward. To the extent that virulence, for instance, is linked to parasite transmission, the evolutionary interests of parasite and host will diverge, and the current winner of the contest to maximize reproductive rates may not be clear, or, for that matter, inevitable. Nonetheless, by affecting susceptibility, host/parasite lifespan and fecundity, and transmission itself, host behavior influences parameters that are basic to our comprehension of how parasites invade host populations, and fundamentally, how parasites evolve. Such an understanding is important for a wide range of scientists, from ecologists and parasitologists to evolutionary, conservation and behavioral biologists: The behavioral alterations that parasites induce can subtly and profoundly affect the distribution and abundance of animals.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Parasites: And Parasitic Diseases In my twelve years' experience in teaching parasitology, I have felt the want of a concise text-book incorporating the names of the common parasites of the domestic animals, and it is with this in mind that I now dedicate this work to the student and to the busy practitioner. The work is divided into four chapters, treating of the following subjects, viz.: External Parasites, Internal Parasites, Protozoa, Preparation of Specimens. The names of the parasites are arranged in tabular form at the beginning of each of the first three chapters. In the first column of the table will be found the Branch; in the second the Class; in the third the Order; in the fourth the Family and in the last the Genus and Species, names by which we know the parasites. By reference to this table one can trace each species at a glance down through the classification to the starting point, - the Branch. Each parasite is dealt with in the order of the tabulation. Book Introduction to Animal Parasitology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to Animal Parasitology Classic Reprint written by J. D. Smyth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Animal Parasitology Special attention has been paid to presenting the life cycles of parasites in detail, relating these, where possible, to the properties of the environment. When a life cycle is presented in diagrammatic form, in this way, the result is frequently complex, but it has been found that the preparation of such diagrams helps to focus attention on some overlooked aspects of the life cycle. Prominence has also been given to two new and rapidly developing fields of parasitology, namely, immunity to animal parasites and the development oftec for the cultivation of parasites in vitro. Within the past few years remarkable advances have been made in both these fields, and these open up exciting possibilities for the future. Biological research is now being carried out on such a scale throughout the world that a text in most specialised fields is out of date almost as soon This is certainly true in parasitology and the constant flow of reprints reaching the author each week serves to emphasise this fact. Many of the ideas set down here will require reconsideration in the light of further work, and this thought should be constantly before the student, as he turns over the pages of this book.
