Book An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology

Download or read book An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology written by A. Ghosh and published by South Asia Books. This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedia was initiated to accomplish the ambitious task of presenting the findings of the last 150 years of Indian archaeology in a single compendium. More than 100 scholars were selected to contribute essays dealing with the prehistory, protohistory, & the ancient historical period up to the 12th century. Volume 1 is organized into 20 subject chapters including dating, pottery, rock art, settlements, technology, cultures, etc. A third of this volume is devoted to the chapter on cultures, which are defined & named basically by time periods, e.g., Mesolithic, Neolithic, Iron Age, etc. Volume 1 is copiously indexed & extensive bibliographic references are provided at the ends of sections within the chapters. Volume 2 is a gazetteer of known & excavated sites arranged alphabetically; extensive treatment is given to large & important sites. Each volume makes references to appropriate entries in the other. Although the introduction mentions the general reader, the encyclopedia is written by archaeologists & primarily for archaeologists; one needs a good background in archaeology to find it useful. The entries provide highly detailed & specific information. Entries are well written & this will remain the most authoritative reference work in its area for years. A must acquisition for graduate & research libraries with collections in this field.--C. J. Busick, University of Colorado.

Book A Source book of Indian Archaeology Settlements technology and trade

Download or read book A Source book of Indian Archaeology Settlements technology and trade written by Frank Raymond Allchin and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: Numerous B/w Illustrations & Maps Description: The articles selected for this anthology are meant to act as a guide to the changing ramifications and some major foci of Indian archaeology up to the mid-eighties. The subsequent publications are still too close to us for a clear historical assessment. Although published some eighteen years later than the first volume, compiled with the same intention this is a definitive 'source-book' in its own right and will further help people to turn to some major studies which have become over the years difficult of access. Like archaeology elsewhere, Indian archaeology too is getting increasingly complex and perhaps polarized. In a sense the articles incorporated in the present volume serve as a reminder of some of the issues which confronted Indian archaeology before the current phase of complexity and politicization. The relevant literature, right from the beginning of Indian archaeological studies, was carefully scrutinized in its entirety before the present volume was compiled.

Book The Issues in East Indian Archaeology

Download or read book The Issues in East Indian Archaeology written by Dilip K. Chakrabarti and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: Archaeology is a neglected field of study in eastern India. However, the area from Arunachal to Orissa and Bihar covers a very large chunk of the subcontinent and is also along its most distinctive cultural areas. From this point of view the establishment of a new archaeological research institute, Centre for Archaeological Studies and Training, in Calcutta by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Bengal, is a welcome development. In September 1996 the author who possesses a grassroots familiarity with the issues facing archaeological research in this region delivered a number of lectures at the invitation of this institute. The purpose of these lectures was to assess the current status of archaeological knowledge about east India and highlight some of its research priorities. The picture has been portrayed as objectively as possible and may help in the planning of archaeological research in this part of India.
