Download or read book An Emerging Natural Gas Hub in the Eastern Mediterranean written by Alexander Huurdeman and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 2020, the energy ministers of seven countries and territories established the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum. EMGF's objective is cooperation to overcome obstacles to exploitation of the region's gas resources. Major challenges are (i) lowering the cost of supplying eastern Mediterranean gas in regional and international markets, and (ii) opening markets to enable hub operations and price discovery. The World Bank is supporting efforts to meet the second challenge and, in so doing, to meet the first as well.

Book The scramble for the Eastern Mediterranean

Download or read book The scramble for the Eastern Mediterranean written by Valeria Talbot and published by Ledizioni. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few years, the Eastern Mediterranean has become a major hotspot for both natural gas and geopolitical competition. Natural gas discoveries in the last decade have attracted growing interest from regional countries and beyond. However, recent escalations in tensions and outright confrontations suggest that competition goes beyond the scramble for energy. Indeed, natural gas is just one of the factors that contribute to shaping security and geopolitical dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean, which has emerged as a crucial strategic area in the broader Mediterranean and the Middle East.Moving from the analysis of these interconnected factors, this Report examines the strategy and the plethora of interests of regional and international players, as well as the interplay between cooperative and competitive dynamics in the region. What are the geopolitical, security, and energy interests of the countries involved? What are the implications on the regional security context of the moves and policies of regional and international powers?

Book Natural Gas Flares Up Over Eastern Mediterranean

Download or read book Natural Gas Flares Up Over Eastern Mediterranean written by Mamdouh G. Salameh and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of huge reserves of natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean in the last few years are stirring the pot of regional turmoil and provoking various reactions from the other players in the area. It is also opening up new economic opportunities and redefining strategic relationships. The recent hydrocarbon finds are thus catalyzing long-running security issues, rather than creating new ones. It looks as if the region is on the verge of a very volatile and highly complicated situation. The complex nature of the overlapping claims, history of conflict in the region and potential riches available to cash strapped nations, present a long-term security dilemma for regional states and makes it more difficult to resolve the various disputes. Moreover, the gas discoveries are not only changing the energy calculus in the eastern Mediterranean but also creating some new geopolitical developments that could impact on future Russian gas exports to the European Union (EU) and also on Turkey's strategic goal to be the energy hub for Europe. The paper will argue that potential disputes about gas are largely containable, owing either to an asymmetry of military power between Israel and its neighbours or to membership of NATO or the European Union, which should encourage negotiations rather than confrontation. It will also argue that there may be a need for a UN-sponsored regional conference with the main task of facilitating negotiations, say, between Lebanon and Israel as well as between the Turks and Greek Cypriots. Such international negotiations and arbitration appear necessary to avoid future military conflict. The paper will conclude that the huge gas riches could either exacerbate an already very tense and dangerous situation in the area or could lead to a reduction of tension and mutual benefits to all.

Book The Southern Energy Corridor Turkey s Role in European Energy Security

Download or read book The Southern Energy Corridor Turkey s Role in European Energy Security written by Vedat Yorucu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the importance of Turkey in diversifying supplies in future European energy security, focusing in particular on the rapidly emerging southern energy corridor. Turkey, by its location, occupies a key role in this corridor, fed by hydrocarbon supplies from Russian, Caspian, east Mediterranean and Arab sources. The book examines Turkey's role as a transit country (in addition to its own growing domestic energy market) and it utilizes the latest evidence on the geopolitics of various pipelines which convergence on Turkey. The evidence, including maps, strongly favor Turkey as an energy hub within a regional energy model driven by rational behavior and market forces. The book recommends an increasing strategic energy cooperation between the EU and Turkey to maximize mutual interest.

Book Global Energy Governance

Download or read book Global Energy Governance written by Andreas Goldthau and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and Global Public Policy Institute publication The global market for oil and gas resources is rapidly changing. Three major trends—the rise of new consumers, the increasing influence of state players, and concerns about climate change—are combining to challenge existing regulatory structures, many of which have been in place for a half-century. Global Energy Governance analyzes the energy market from an institutionalist perspective and offers practical policy recommendations to deal with these new challenges. Much of the existing discourse on energy governance deals with hard security issues but neglects the challenges to global governance. Global Energy Governance fills this gap with perspectives on how regulatory institutions can ensure reliable sources of energy, evaluate financial risk, and provide emergency response mechanisms to deal with interruptions in supply. The authors bring together decisionmakers from industry, government, and civil society in order to address two central questions: •What are the current practices of existing institutions governing global oil and gas on financial markets? •How do these institutions need to adapt in order to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century? The resulting governance-oriented analysis of the three interlocking trends also provides the basis for policy recommendations to improve global regulation. Book Toward an Eastern Mediterranean Integrated Gas Infrastructure

Download or read book Toward an Eastern Mediterranean Integrated Gas Infrastructure written by Shaul Zemach and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zemach has devoted considerable attention both at the ministry and subsequently to working out possible arrangements for energy cooperation with other countries in the region, with the active support of the United States and the European Union. In this paper, he develops these ideas further and puts forward the outline of a proposal for an Eastern Mediterranean Integrated Gas Infrastructure. This proposal, while seemingly idealistic, is in fact pragmatic, taking as its point of departure existing pipelines and LNG plants. The proposal is scalable, setting out what could be accomplished now and what could be developed in the medium to long term if conditions permit. He identifies an important role for the United States and the European Union in bringing the project to fruition. Zemach’s willingness to think creatively puts current conflicts into perspective and will encourage regional leaders, the industry, and public opinion to reflect on the concrete benefits that a collaborative approach to developing the region’s natural gas resources could bring.

Book New Technologies for Eastern Mediterranean Offshore Gas Exploration

Download or read book New Technologies for Eastern Mediterranean Offshore Gas Exploration written by Nestor Fylaktos and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examines the evolution of technologies in the offshore exploration and production of hydrocarbons in the Eastern Mediterranean, and their future environmental impact for the region. It finds that new technologies move this stage of natural gas development into increasing digitalisation, better designs for safety equipment, and increased automation. It then proceeds to propose a number of policy measures on collaboration, data sharing, environmental baseline surveys, open digital platforms, as well as better monitoring for fugitive greenhouse gas emissions. All these will aid in improving the environmental credentials of offshore operations, but they must be accompanied by closer cooperation and collaboration amongst the countries that surround the East Mediterranean Sea.

Book The Eastern Mediterranean as a Focus for the EU s Energy Transition Deep rooted Enmities and New Opportunities for Cooperation Between Greece Turkey and Cyprus

Download or read book The Eastern Mediterranean as a Focus for the EU s Energy Transition Deep rooted Enmities and New Opportunities for Cooperation Between Greece Turkey and Cyprus written by Moritz Rau and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The EU and Germany have set themselves ambitious climate and energy policy targets. Taking into account the need to reduce emissions from all sectors of the economy, they now have a different perspective on the energy situation in the Eastern Mediterranean than a few years ago. Offshore natural gas imports from the Eastern Mediterranean are losing relevance in favour of the region's prospects for contributing to the EU's emerging green energy economy. In view of Europe's rising demand for renewable electricity, transcontinental electricity interconnections between the European, African and Middle Eastern power grids could become a new normal via the Eastern Mediterranean. There is also regional potential for playing a role in the EU's hydrogen strategy. Advancing the energy transition in the East Mediterranean brings new economic perspectives and incentives for political cooperation both on regional and international levels. Conflicts and tensions over the delimitation of maritime
