Nonnative bush honeysuckles (Lonicera species) are native to Eurasia and were introduced in the 1700s (Czarapata 2005, Rich 2000). These vigorous, woody shrubs are found throughout the United States and were promoted for ornamental use, wildlife habitat, and erosion control. Due to their widespread planting and vigorous spread, nonnative bush honeysuckles have become problematic in urban areas, abandoned fields, and forest land.

Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) is native to east Asia and arrived in Long Island, NY, in 1806. In 1862, a horticultural variety of Japanese honeysuckle, called Hall's honeysuckle, was found in Flushing, NY. This vigorous invader was promoted for wildlife habitat and erosion control as well as for a landscape plant; its sale is now illegal in some states (Kaufman and Kaufman 2007).

Herder (Gorchov and Trisel, 2003), is one of the most prolific invasive plant species across Midwestern and Northeastern landscapes of the United States. The locations of 2,095 individual Amur honeysuckle stems were geolocated using handheld GPS units in the understory of mixed growth forests at two study sites located approximately 5 km apart in northwestern Greene County, OH. Each site has undergone different levels of anthropogenic disturbance through time. The stem position data was used to measure the spatial clumping distribution and the density of Amur honeysuckle. The spatial clumping of Amur honeysuckle stems was measured using the fractal box counting method at each study site without regard for streams, trails, or elevation. The density of Amur honeysuckle (number of stems per square meter) was measured in zones as a function of the horizontal distance perpendicular to the edge of streams, trails, and within elevation (area between contour lines). Amur honeysuckle density is found to be uncorrelated with its proximity to streams, trails, and elevation. The density of Amur honeysuckle as a function of distance from streams and trails does not reveal an edge effect. The fractal dimension (scaling exponent) was computed to be ~1.5 at each of the two sites which means that the spatial clustering is the same for actively managed (partial Amur honeysuckle removal) and unmanaged sites. These results suggest that the invasion potential of Amur honeysuckle is robust, and its distribution may not be constrained in riparian forests by the variables included in this study.

Book excerpt: This volume is an account of the scientific and social responses made to the discovery of an invasive forest insect -- the emerald ash borer or EAB (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, 1888) -- in North America, that was formally announced in July 2002. Since its recognition, this wood-boring beetle has become one of the most destructive and costly exotic species ever encountered. More than $300 million in federal USDA-APHIS funds (alone) have been devoted to battling this pest, which has killed some tens of millions of ash trees, chiefly within southeastern Michigan and surrounding states. EAB has now been found in 28 states and two Canadian provinces. But those numbers are almost certain to keep growing in coming years. While primarily a case study, this work nonetheless examines larger issues concerning invasive species as a whole, their inadvertent transport and worldwide spread through the rise of globalization, regulations that have been adopted to prevent their introduction, and the successes or failures of state and federal agencies to try and enforce those regulations. It offers the first general work of its kind to appear on the ash borer that is directed towards a broad audience including the public, entomologists and foresters, environmentalists and ecologists, researchers, regulators, and indeed anyone who wishes to learn more about this important and timely topic.
