Download or read book An Analysis of the System of Government Throughout the British Empire Classic Reprint written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Analysis of the System of Government Throughout the British Empire It has been estimated that the Empire of Rome at the height of its power covered 1,600,000 square miles of territory and was acknowledged by about 85 millions of subjects. King George V. reigns to-day over 11,400,000 square miles of territory and over a population of 410 millions. The British Empire therefore surpasses the Empire of Rome - the only true Imperial precedent - by a margin infinitely greater than that which separated Rome from the Eastern dominations which preceded it. It far surpasses in extent, in wealth and populousness any which Napoleon saw in his dreams under the Egyptian stars. It differs moreover from every Empire which has dominated the world in the fact that its territory is not continuous, or even relatively continuous. Its ramifications embrace every continent, its interests are paramount on every sea. The expanse of its territory is matched only by the complexity of its organisation - a complexity which is amply demonstrated in the succeeding pages. This complexity is not entirely due to the haphazard manner in which the Imperial power has been built up, now by the fortune of war or the exigencies of strategy, now by the need for securing order in outlying territories, now by the natural expansion of a virile people. It is due at least as much to the fact that the constitution, or rather the constitutions, of the Empire reflect every dominant phase of the British genius. Download or read book An Analysis of the System of Government Throughout the British Empire written by Hesperides and published by Hesperides Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Empire and a League of Peace, Together With an Analysis of Federal Government Its Function and Its Method The first of the two essays here published together has been somewhat widely circulated in pamphlet form, the first edition of which appeared in March, 1918. The second was written for the Foreign Press Bureau of the Committee on Public Information for use abroad and was completed in November, 1918. In writing it no attempt was made to give a scientific treatment of federation, but the practical purpose of Explaining its method of operation to those not familiar with this system of government determined the form and substance of the essay. Book Empire Government An Outline of the System Prevailing in the British Commonwealth of Nations

Download or read book Empire Government An Outline of the System Prevailing in the British Commonwealth of Nations written by Manfred Nathan and published by Cornford Press. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EMPIRE GOVERNMENT- AN OUTLINE OF THE SYSTEM PREVAILING IN THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH OF NATIONS by MANFRED K. C. PREFACE: IN view of the great advances which have been made of recent years in the constitutional relations between Great Britain and the self-governing Dominions, as evidenced in the Report of the Inter-Imperial Relations Committee presented to the Imperial Conference of 1926, the time appears opportune for the publication of a sketch of the general system of government which now prevails, both in Great Britain and in the Dominions and other possessions of the British Crown oversea. My object has been to give an account of the existing system, that is, of the Empire, or, as it has latterly been termed, the British Commonwealth of Nations, in a purely statical aspect. I have not dealt with political considerations, except in so far as they affect past historical changes, nor have I ventured upon any speculations in regard to future developments. My sole aim has been to present a general view of the government of the Empire as it is. In order to avoid confusion, and to give a clear outline of the subject, I have refrained from entering into the details of past history, except in so far as they are necessary for the elucidation of the existing position. Nor has it been thought advisable to enter into minute details regarding administration. Information on such matters must be sought in the recognized works dealing with constitutional history and constitutional law. At the same time, I venture to hope that this work may be of assistance to those who desire to obtain a general acquaintance with the salient features of what may be denominated the British system of government. With this object in view, I have endeavoured to make the work as accurate as possible, and to furnish within a brief compass all the information necessary for the purpose. Here and there references to authorities are given, but I have not deemed it desirable to overload the work with them. My main object has been to assist the general reader and the student in obtaining a rapid and succinct acquaintance with the whole subject. With this in view, I have endeavoured to avoid the use of technical language, wherever possible. In the chapter on the self-governing Dominions, I have given a full summary of the Report of the Inter-Imperial Relations Committee, with some necessary commentary. M. N. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the eighteenth century until the 1950s the British Empire was the biggest political entity in the world. The British Empire left its mark on the world in a multitude of ways, many of them permanent. In this Very Short Introduction, Ashley Jackson introduces and defines the British Empire, reviewing its historiography by answering a series of key questions: What was the British Empire, and what were its main constituent parts? What were the phases of imperial expansion and contraction and the general causes of expansion and contraction? How was the Empire ruled? What were its economic effects? What were the cultural implications of empire, in Britain and its colonies? What was life like for people living under imperial rule? What are the legacies of the British Empire and how should we view its place in world history? ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Book The Persistence of Empire

Download or read book The Persistence of Empire written by Eliga H. Gould and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Revolution was the longest colonial war in modern British history and Britain's most humiliating defeat as an imperial power. In this lively, concise book, Eliga Gould examines an important yet surprisingly understudied aspect of the conflict: the British public's predominantly loyal response to its government's actions in North America. Gould attributes British support for George III's American policies to a combination of factors, including growing isolationism in regard to the European continent and a burgeoning sense of the colonies as integral parts of a greater British nation. Most important, he argues, the British public accepted such ill-conceived projects as the Stamp Act because theirs was a sedentary, "armchair" patriotism based on paying others to fight their battles for them. This system of military finance made Parliament's attempt to tax the American colonists look unexceptional to most Britons and left the metropolitan public free to embrace imperial projects of all sorts--including those that ultimately drove the colonists to rebel. Drawing on nearly one thousand political pamphlets as well as on broadsides, private memoirs, and popular cartoons, Gould offers revealing insights into eighteenth-century British political culture and a refreshing account of what the Revolution meant to people on both sides of the Atlantic.

Download or read book Unfinished Empire written by John Darwin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Darwin's After Tamerlane, a sweeping six-hundred-year history of empires around the globe, marked him as a historian of "massive erudition" and narrative mastery. In Unfinished Empire, he marshals his gifts to deliver a monumental one-volume history of Britain's imperium-a work that is sure to stand as the most authoritative, most compelling treatment of the subject for a generation. Darwin unfurls the British Empire's beginnings and decline and its extraordinary range of forms of rule, from settler colonies to island enclaves, from the princely states of India to ramshackle trading posts. His penetrating analysis offers a corrective to those who portray the empire as either naked exploitation or a grand "civilizing mission." Far from ever having a "master plan," the British Empire was controlled by a range of interests often at loggerheads with one another and was as much driven on by others' weaknesses as by its own strength. It shows, too, that the empire was never stable: to govern was a violent process, inevitably creating wars and rebellions. Unfinished Empire is a remarkable, nuanced history of the most complex polity the world has ever known, and a serious attempt to describe the diverse, contradictory ways-from the military to the cultural-in which empires really function. This is essential reading for any lover of sweeping history, or anyone wishing to understand how the modern world came into being.
