Book An Analysis of Gravity Prediction Methods for Continental Areas

Download or read book An Analysis of Gravity Prediction Methods for Continental Areas written by Luman E. Wilcox and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mean gravity anomaly values which represent 1 degree x 1 degree surface areas can be predicted on the continents by geophysical gravity correlation methods whether or nor measured gravity data exists within those 1 degree x 1 degree areas. These methods take into consideration the earth's structure, composition, and response to changes in surficial mass distribution by means of observed or computed correlations between gravity and other geophysical parameters within geologic/tectonic provinces. Linear basic prediction functions, used to describe and predict the relationships between gravity and elevation, are shown to be a natural consequence of the properties of gravity reduction procedures and the observed behavior of gravity anomalies within structurally homogeneous regions. Book Gravity Field Seismicity and Tectonics of the Indian Peninsula and the Himalayas

Download or read book Gravity Field Seismicity and Tectonics of the Indian Peninsula and the Himalayas written by R.K. Verma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in Science and Technology have removed the boundaries betwe~n the so-called 'fundamental' and 'applied' fields of research. This has been particularly evident in the rapidly expanding geophysical sciences with their far reaching applications. Fundamental geophysical studies of surface, subsurface and crustal structures where gravity investigations play an important role, are of immediate potential importance in defining major structural features or geological units which may control or influence the development of metallogenic provinces, petroleum potential areas or coal fields. Gravity studies in India have a long history and tradition. The earliest gravity measurements were made with two brass pendulums loaned by the Royal Society of England, when Basevi and Heaviside established 30 gravity pendulum stations between Cape Comorin and Ladakh during 1865 to 1873. Over the subsequent years, large areas of the country have been systematically covered through gravimeters and a number of regional and detailed studies have been undertaken by various agencies like Survey of India, Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and a number of universities. Assistance was provided by late Prof. G. P. Woollard and his former students Muckenfuss, Bonini, Shankaranarayan and Murali Manghnani, who have connected India to the international gravity net work. Gravity studies carried out by the Survey of India have been of great value in geodetic studies.

Book Applications of Gravity Anomalies in Geophysics

Download or read book Applications of Gravity Anomalies in Geophysics written by Henglei Zhang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-26 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the density of the subsurface of a planet is crucial in determining its interior structure, and one can estimate the average bulk crustal density directly using the admittance between topography and gravity, which has been successfully used for the Moon and is being extended to Mars. The interpretation of gravity data is commonly done by computation of a gravity anomaly (GA) by correcting the raw data for a number of factors that impact the gravity field. Depending on the target science, different types of GA can be computed, the interpretation of which have been widely employed in geophysics to explore the interior of the Earth and other planets, through applications in airborne gravity, near-surface geophysics, regional geophysics, and planetary geophysics. Yet how to extract a great variety of information from GAs for applications in geophysics entails further investigation. Over the decades, remarkable progress has been made to extract information from GAs identified from data. For instance, a series of 3D inversion algorithms facilitates the extraction of the subsurface density distribution. With the improved processing based on dense gravity observations that yield high precision and high resolution GAs, more detailed geological information can be unveiled. When using the admittance between topography and gravity to estimate the crustal density, it is essential to identify what kinds of GAs to be used, such as Bouguer gravity or free-air gravity. Also, what appropriate approaches to scrutinize the applications of GAs in various case studies (e.g., calculating the geoid and estimating the elastic thickness) need to be decoded.

Book Mean Gravity Anomaly Prediction Techniques with a Comparative Analysis of the Accuracy and Economy of Selected Methods

Download or read book Mean Gravity Anomaly Prediction Techniques with a Comparative Analysis of the Accuracy and Economy of Selected Methods written by Luman E. Wilcox and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mean gravity anomalies are predicted to provide the average value of gravity within 1 deg x 1 deg surface areas or surface areas of other sizes. Prediction methods include conventional, statistical, deterministic, and geophysical. The statistical methods appear to give the best results when adequate computer resources are available. The deterministic methods give good results with minimum time and computer requirements. The geophysical methods give usable predictions when little or no measured data is available. The most accurate conventional method is graphical interpolation, but this method is too time-consuming to be recommended for general use.
