Excerpt: ...chap, iii.) is, that as Christianity is not discoverable by reason, its scheme must be sought in Scripture; nor is it an objection to any interpretation of Scripture that it discloses a doctrine or a precept, not contrary to reason and natural religion, but above them, that is neither discoverable through their teaching nor made obligatory by their authority. CHAPTER II. OF THE SUPPOSED PRESUMPTION AGAINST A REVELATION, CONSIDERED AS MIRACULOUS. Christianity is, as we have seen (chap, i.), important. Before considering particular objections to it, revelation in general is objected to; because, from the very nature of the case, it is above Nature, and so miraculous. The miraculousness of revelation, and miracles generally, will therefore be first considered. Are objections to revelation on this ground well founded? A. The objection lies, not against the particular doctrines of Christianity, but against revelation; and that on one of two grounds; either 1. Because the scheme of religion is not discoverable without revelation. But this is no just objection; because there are in Nature innumerable things not discoverable by our natural faculties, but yet true and real. 2. Or, because revelation, as miraculous, is unlike the known course of Nature. But this is no just objection; because a. It is not probable that everything in the unknown course of Nature, is like something in the known. b. And, even in the known course of Nature, many things are unlike one another. c. The course of Nature is not so unlike revelation as many suppose, and this will hereafter appear. Whether the above examples include all that is meant by miraculous, may be questioned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Human Nature, and Other Sermons" is a sermon collection by Joseph Butler, an 18th-century English theologian and philosopher. The book is an excellent collection of Butler's moral and theological insights, addressing significant issues of human nature, ethics, and religious thought. Butler digs into the moral and ethical components of human existence in this work, that examines the intricacies of human nature. He argues that people have an innate moral awareness that guides them toward virtue and ethical decision-making. Butler's sermons examine the idea of conscience, its role in impacting how people act, and its compatibility with Christian ideals. The sermons in this collection also address bigger theological issues, such as divine providence, the essence of God, and the compatibility of reason and faith. Butler's literature displays his belief in the compatibility of human reason and religious belief, pushing for a rational and considered approach to religious problems. The intellectual depth and moral clarity of "Human Nature, and Other Sermons" are lauded. Butler's work influenced moral philosophy and Christian theology, and it is still studied and praised for its ongoing relevance in questions of ethics, human nature, and the link between reason and faith.

Book Joseph Butler Fifteen Sermons and other writings on ethics

Download or read book Joseph Butler Fifteen Sermons and other writings on ethics written by David McNaughton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Butler's Fifteen Sermons (1729) is a classic work of moral philosophy, which remains widely influential. The topics Butler discusses include the role of conscience in human nature, self-love and egoism, compassion, resentment and forgiveness, and love of our neighbour and of God. The text of the enlarged and corrected second edition is here presented together with a selection of Butler's other ethical writings: A Dissertation of the Nature of Virtue, A Sermon Preached Before the House of Lords, and relevant extracts from his correspondence with Samuel Clarke. While this is a readers' edition that avoids cluttering Butler's text with textual variants and intrusive footnotes, it comes complete with scholarly apparatus intended to aid the reader in studying Butlers work in depth. David McNaughton contributes a substantial historical and philosophical introduction that highlights the continuing importance of these works. In addition, there are extensive notes at the end of the volume, including significant textual variants, and full details of Butler's sources and references, as well as short summaries of Butler's predecessors, and a selective bibliography. This will be the definitive resource for anyone interested in Butler's moral philosophy.
