Book Imagining the King s Death

Download or read book Imagining the King s Death written by John Barrell and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is high treason in British law to imagine the king's death. But after the execution of Louis XVI in 1793, everyone in Britain must have found themselves imagining that the same fate might befall George III. How easy was it to distinguish between fantasising about the death of George and imagining it, in the legal sense of intending or designing? John Barrell examines this question in the context of the political trials of the mid-1790s and the controversies they generated. He shows how the law of treason was adapted in the years following Louis's death to punish what was acknowledged to be a "modern" form of treason unheard of when the law had been framed. The result, he argues, was the invention of a new and imaginary reading, a "figurative" treason, by which the question of who was imagining the king's death, the supposed traitors or those who charged them with treason, became inseparable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of remarkable essays, initially published in 1955 and now available in paperback for the first time, Samuel Bernstein elucidates the meaning of human striving for improvement with regard to the problems raised by one of the most turbulent periods of history. Written with profound conviction and literary acumen, these essays will give the reader, in the author's words, a sense of a “kinship of ideas and the mutual sympathies of peoples in matters concerning human betterment.” These essays represents the fruits of twenty years of careful research in the political and intellectual history of the Atlantic civilization, particularly as it relates to the leading movements and men of France. Bernstein's expert knowledge of the history of political movements and social policies places him among the ranking authorities in that field. Book Political Trials in an Age of Revolutions

Download or read book Political Trials in an Age of Revolutions written by Michael T. Davis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-30 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection provides new insights into the ’Age of Revolutions’, focussing on state trials for treason and sedition, and expands the sophisticated discussion that has marked the historiography of that period by examining political trials in Britain and the north Atlantic world from the 1790s and into the nineteenth century. In the current turbulent period, when Western governments are once again grappling with how to balance security and civil liberty against the threat of inflammatory ideas and actions during a period of international political and religious tension, it is timely to re-examine the motives, dilemmas, thinking and actions of governments facing similar problems during the ‘Age of Revolutions’. The volume begins with a number of essays exploring the cases tried in England and Scotland in 1793-94 and examining those political trials from fresh angles (including their implications for legal developments, their representation in the press, and the emotion and the performances they generated in court). Subsequent sections widen the scope of the collection both chronologically (through the period up to the Reform Act of 1832 and extending as far as the end of the nineteenth century) and geographically (to Revolutionary France, republican Ireland, the United States and Canada). These comparative and longue durée approaches will stimulate new debate on the political trials of Georgian Britain and of the north Atlantic world more generally as well as a reassessment of their significance. This book deliberately incorporates essays by scholars working within and across a number of different disciplines including Law, Literary Studies and Political Science.

Book The Revolution in Popular Literature

Download or read book The Revolution in Popular Literature written by Ian Haywood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-08 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a new look at the evolution of popular literature in Britain in the Romantic and Victorian periods. Making use of a wide range of archival and primary sources, he argues that radical politics played a decisive role in the transformation of popular literature. By charting the key moments in the history of 'cheap' literature, the book casts new light on the many neglected popular genres and texts: the 'pig's meat' anthology, the female-authored didactic tale, and Chartist fiction.

Book Republicanism and Bourgeois Radicalism

Download or read book Republicanism and Bourgeois Radicalism written by Isaac Kramnick and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book Isaac Kramnick adds a strong voice to the lively debate about the nature of political ideology in eighteenth-century England and America. Whereas the now-dominant "republican thesis" sees liberal ideology as virtually irrelevant in an age of civic commitment to a moral public order, Kramnick makes a strong case for a thriving liberalism in the Anglo-American world at the time of the American and French revolutions. In his view, both ideologies flourished during this period, and it is unwise to see one as the exclusive paradigm in which eighteenth-century political discourse took place. In short, he proposes to the republican school a scholarly truce.
