Book Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program Large Pallet Development

Download or read book Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program Large Pallet Development written by Joseph A. Drelicharz and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To complement the high speed of the advanced craft being developed by the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program, a need exists to consolidate cargo into larger unit loads in order to improve the material handling rates at the terminals of the ship-to-shore cycle. This report documents the design, fabrication, test, and evaluation of four prototype large pallets, 8 x 9 feet in area, each capable of carrying four standard 40 x 48-inch pallets. The prototype pallets include a wooden, a folded-plate, an aluminum, and a strongback design. Each pallet functioned well with respect to its specific design criteria; however, no one pallet was clearly superior to the other three alternatives, and none fulfilled all the design criteria. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investments in amphibious capabilities by U.S. partners and allies in the Asia Pacific is altering the range of capabilities available in that region. It is also changing the types and frequency of exercises partner nations seek to undertake with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps team. This study examines ally- and partner-nation investments in amphibious capabilities, how those capabilities will impact demand for U.S. forces, and the range of U.S. amphibious fleet composites to meet the changing demand.

Book Air Cushion Vehicle Control Simulation Proposed Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program Plan

Download or read book Air Cushion Vehicle Control Simulation Proposed Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program Plan written by and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is a summary of simulation needs and recommendations specific to the current Navy amphibious assault landing craft (AALC) Program which is developing high speed amphibious air cushion vehicles (ACV). The recommendations fall within three categories: mathematical modelling, hybrid computer facility, and man-in-the-loop simulation. To a large extent the needs and recommendations presented here are applicable to other Navy programs as well, since many factors are common to any craft development program.

Book Beach Materials Handling

Download or read book Beach Materials Handling written by R. W. Julian and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers means for improving the handling rate of palletized cargo at the craft-beach interface with reference to the advanced landing craft under development by the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program. A base-line unloading rate is established and components of the base-line system are studied to see if modifications to the equipment or off-loading methods can effect an increase in unloading rates. A number of advanced concepts are considered, the more promising of which include a multiple pallet transporter, sliding craft deck, causeway, and portable nearshore breakwater. While these concepts improve unloading rates in specific instances, they may be difficult to justify in terms of their cost and contribution to the overall efficiency of the general unloading phase of amphibious operations. A more desirable option may be to increase the number of rough terrain forklifts and/or develop a more efficient forklift. (Author).

Book The Development Of Amphibious Tactics In The U S Navy

Download or read book The Development Of Amphibious Tactics In The U S Navy written by General Holland M. Smith USMC and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM our entry into the war at Pearl Harbor in December 1941 until the Japanese surrender in September 1945, every major offensive campaign launched by the United States was initiated by an amphibious assault. Our landings at North Africa in November 1942, at Sicily and Italy in July and September 1943, and at Normandy and Southern France in June and September 1944 ended in the defeat of the German armies in Western Europe by the Allied Expeditionary Force in May 1945. The Pacific offensive, which began in the South Pacific with the landings at the Solomons in August 1942 and in the Central Pacific at the Gilberts in November 1943, carried us 3,000 miles to the Philippine Islands and 5,000 miles through to the inner defenses of the empire in the Volcano and Ryukyu Islands....Amphibious warfare was the primary offensive tactic in our conduct of global war. The tactics and techniques of our landing operations represent a new and significant development in the art of war. Although military history contains many instances of landing operations conducted by both military and navy forces in all parts of the world, from the early time man first crossed the sea to wage war, the landings were generally either limited in scope and purpose or unopposed. The feasibility of amphibious raids, in which assault forces landed from the sea are withdrawn after limited operations, and of unopposed landings, relying on surprise and conducted for the purpose of subsequent military operations ashore, has long been recognized. Until the recent war, however, the effect of modern defensive weapons was considered too decisive to permit successful assault from the sea. The development of radar, aviation, coast defense guns, torpedoes, submarines, mines, defensive obstructions and obstacles, automatic weapons, highly mobile reserves, and the necessary communication facilities to coordinate and control them seemed to present insurmountable difficulties to amphibious attack.

Book Evaluation of Three Proposed Recovery Systems for the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program

Download or read book Evaluation of Three Proposed Recovery Systems for the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program written by John Drulle and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an evaluation of three proposed recovery systems for emergency stopping of air cushion vehicles during docking within LSD (Landing Ship Dock) craft. The results of a trade-off study indicate that a barricade net, coupled with energy absorbing wire rope is the optimum system for the scheduled amphibious assault craft program demonstration tests, as well as for advanced development. Book Systems Analysis of Amphibious Landing Craft Comparisons of Revised Designs of Advanced Landing Craft

Download or read book Systems Analysis of Amphibious Landing Craft Comparisons of Revised Designs of Advanced Landing Craft written by Andrew R. Grant and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report compares the relative performance of the revised designs for advanced landing craft as they existed at the end of the preliminary design phase of the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft program (S14-17X). The results were obtained largely through the use of detailed simulations of amphibious assault operations using various combinations of ships, helicopters, landing craft and operating modes in the mid-range time period (to 1985). The report points out the effects of advanced characteristics on the amphibious assault process, and compares several types of advanced craft with each other and with conventional craft. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made as to further development of advanced landing craft. In particular, the JEFF craft are recommended for further development.

Book Development Of Amphibious Doctrine

Download or read book Development Of Amphibious Doctrine written by Major David C. Emmel and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the U.S. had conducted amphibious operations since the Revolutionary War, it was not until after the Spanish-American War that the military services attempted to codify procedures in doctrine. Early emphasis focused on command relationships and the responsibilities of commanders, eventually expanding to incorporate operational concepts, tactical techniques, and the necessary equipment. In an environment characterized by inter-service rivalry, as well as monetary and materiel constraints, dedicated individuals and organizations overcame numerous obstacles to develop, practice, and successfully execute amphibious operations in World War II. This thesis examines the evolutionary development of amphibious doctrine by the U.S. Marine Corps, Army, and Navy, and the employment of that doctrine during Operations Watchtower and Torch in World War II. The examination includes an analysis of the historical efforts to develop innovative solutions to a wide range of challenges the services faced at the beginning of the 20th Century leading up to World War II. How the leadership solved those challenges informs the efforts of current leadership in addressing contemporary doctrinal, operational, and tactical challenges and those of the future.

Book Assault Landing Craft

Download or read book Assault Landing Craft written by Brian Lavery and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landing craft assault or LCA was one of the unsung heroes of the Second World War. It took part in practically every amphibious operation from Norway to Normandy and landed around 400,000 men in action conditions, plus many more in training. It was the only serviceable British landing craft at the beginning of the War, and it remained in service until the Suez operation of 1956. It landed the first waves of infantry on the British and Canadian beaches in Normandy in 1944, and Americans on the notorious Omaha Beach. Its far-sighted design of 1938 remains the basis for the landing craft of today. This is the first book devoted to this humble but essential craft. It examines its design history before the War, when amphibious operations were deeply unfashionable. It describes its design and construction with plans that will be useful to modellers and wargamers. It includes information on the role of the crew and the techniques and tactics used in landings. It gives an account of the larger ships which carried it and the life of the sailors and soldiers who travelled in it, with many vivid personal accounts. Finally, it describes its role in the many operations in which it took part, including withdrawals such as Dunkirk and the catastrophic Dieppe raid of 1942.

Book Impact of Containerization on the Advanced Landing Craft

Download or read book Impact of Containerization on the Advanced Landing Craft written by R. W. Julian and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents an investigation of the impact of containers on the advanced landing craft under development by the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program. Military and civilian container concepts were studied to identify those containers that might be used in amphibious operations. The compatibility of craft and containers was investigated, including the equipment and loads and craft must handle to incorporate containers. Various means of off-loading the containers at or on the beach were analyzed. The results indicate that small containers are compatible with all craft, while large containers, such as the 8 x 8 x 20-foot container, are compatible with all except the smallest landing craft (30,000-pound payload), which cannot handle these containers loaded to their maximum gross weight. Rough terrain forklifts with appropriate capacities and fittings are the best equipment for off-loading containers, except for the case of 8 x 8 x 20-foot containers in the smaller landing craft.
