Book excerpt: In this report literature data on endogenous ileal protein and amino acid losses in broilers are reviewed. The aim was to propose an estimated value for the flow of basal endogenous protein at the terminal ileum and to determine the amino acid composition of the basal endogenous protein. The proposed basal endogenous ileal amino acid flows can subsequently be used to calculate standardized ileal digestible amino acid values for feedstuffs for poultry from experimentally determined apparent ileal digestible amino acids.Basal endogenous ileal amino acids losses are expressed in mg per kg dry matter intake. The quantitative flow of basal endogenous amino acids at the terminal ileum is dependent on the methodology used for quantification, the age of the animals and the presence of phytate and phytase in the diet. From our literature survey we concluded that the nitrogen free feeding method (NFD) and the regression method (REG) are most suitable to determine basal endogenous amino acids at the terminal ileum in broilers. Based on 29 observations from 25 studies with NFD, 6 observations of 4 REG studies, 5 observations of 3 HDP studies and 2 observations from 2 EHC studies, we calculated the basal ileal endogenous amino acid flow in broilers aged 15 to 45 days. The total flow of basal endogenous ileal amino acids amounts 5.90 g AA per kg dry matter intake. The values for basal endogenous ileal flow of the individual amino acids are used by CVB to estimate standardized ileal amino acid digestibility values from apparent amino acid digestibility values of feedstuffs for broilers (see CVB Documentation Report no. 61).Ileal endogenous protein is rich in GLU, ASP, GLY, THR, SER and PRO and rather closely reflects the composition of mucoproteins.

Book excerpt: During the last decade, the concept of standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) has been used in diet formulation for pigs. However, there is limited data on the nutritional composition and SID of CP and AA in home-grown European soybean and rapeseed products. For full-fat soybeans (FFSB), the presence of heat-labile trypsin inhibitors may cause problems in protein digestion of pigs. Therefore, the optimization of heat treatment for FFSB is a need to reduce trypsin inhibitor activity for improving SID of CP and AA. However, excessive heat treatment may have a negative effect on protein digestion. Furthermore, reducing dietary protein levels in combination with the supplementation of Bacillus spp. may reduce feed costs and improve pigs’ gut health. As a result of the present study, home-grown European soybean and rapeseed products can be considered as a suitable alternative to imported soybean products for pigs raised in organic and conventional farming systems. Wet heating at 100°C for 16 min, together with autoclaving at 110°C from 15 to 45 min reflects optimal heat treatment for FFSB resulting in greater SID of CP and AA with lower destruction of AA. Reducing the dietary CP level is an alternative strategy to improve SID of some AA, thereby decreasing feed cost and nitrogen excretion. The supplementation of Bacillus spp. promoted gene copy numbers of Roseburia spp., which may be beneficial due to ascribed health promoting properties of this butyrate producer.

Deux modèles ont été testés : 1) Y = digestibilité apparente des AA (AAdig, % diet) ; X = protéine brute (CP) (%) et 2) Y = AAdig (g/kg de DM) ; X = AA totaux analysés (tAA, g/kg de DM) dans lequel l'ordonnée à l'origine du graphique est la perte d'endogène (EL). Une base de données de 49 publications a été divisée en 5 sous-sections 1) céréales (orge, sorgho, blé et maïs), 2) tourteau de soja (SBM), 3) farines de viande et d'os (MBM) 4) La sous-section 1) ainsi que des fèves de faba et de pois pour étudier EL et 5) seulement des fèves de faba et des pois. L'étude et les ingrédients ont été inclus dans le modèle comme effets fixes. Pour les céréales, la prédiction des AAdig par CP est précise (R2 de 0.68 pour Thr et de 0.92 pour Ala). La pente est différente selon le type de céréales (céréale x CP ; P 0.05) pour la majorité des AA sauf pour le maïs qui n'a pas eu de relation significative avec CP (P 0.05). Book excerpt: Amino acids (AAs) are not only building blocks of protein, but are also signalling molecules as well as regulators of gene expression and the protein phosphorylation cascade. Additionally, AAs are key precursors for syntheses of hormones and low-molecular weight nitrogenous substances with each having enormous biological importance. For example, physiological concentrations of AA metabolites (e.g., nitric oxide, polyamines, glutathione, taurine, thyroid hormones, and serotonin) are required for cell functions. Growing evidence shows that humans and animals have dietary requirements for all proteinogenic AAs. Mammals, birds and fish also have species- and age-dependent needs for some AA-related substances. However, elevated levels of other products (e.g., ammonia, homocysteine, H2S, and asymmetric dimethylarginine) are pathogenic factors for neurological disorders, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular disease. Thus, optimal amounts of AAs and their ratios in diets and circulation are crucial for whole body homeostasis and health. Adequate provision of one or a mixture of functional AAs or metabolites may be beneficial for ameliorating health problems at various stages of the life cycle (e.g., fetal growth restriction, neonatal morbidity and mortality, weaning-associated intestinal dysfunction and wasting syndrome, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, the metabolic syndrome, and infertility). Dietary supplementation of these nutrients can also optimize the efficiency of metabolic transformations to enhance muscle growth, milk production, and athletic performance, while preventing excess fat deposition and reducing adiposity. Therefore, functional AAs hold great promise in improving the growth, health and well-being of individuals.
