There are sometimes lenticular and seemingly inde pendent masses of the slate and schist series sharing the folds and contortions and having a columnar cleavage coincident with the bedding. The porphyry flowed over the Potsdam east of Deadwood and under that in the Homestake to the west, lifting it like a laccolite. The gold was deposited by chemical action after having been segregated. Later studies have added greatly to our knowledge of the details of the stratigraphy and structure, the distribution of the rocks and minerals, and the age of the beds, and have afforded means for a more complete elucidation of the geologic history, especially the physiographic development of the Black Hills region. This was after the reign of the Moravian missionaries in that place, but before Kotgarh had quite forgotten her title of "Mistress of the Northern Hills."
