Book Cinema and Radio in Britain and America 1920 60

Download or read book Cinema and Radio in Britain and America 1920 60 written by Jeffrey Richards and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cinema and radio in Britain and America, 1920-60 charts the evolving relationship between the two principal mass media of the period. It explores the creative symbiosis that developed between the two, including regular film versions of popular radio series as well as radio versions of hit films. This fascinating volume examines specific genres (comedy and detective stories) to identify similarities and differences in their media appearances, and in particular issues arising from the nature of film as predominantly visual and radio as exclusively aural. Richards also highlights the interchange of personnel, such as Orson Welles, between the two media. Throughout the book runs the theme of comparison and contrast between the experiences of the two media in Britain and America. The book culminates with an in-depth analysis of the media appearances of three enduring mythic figures in popular culture: Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan and The Scarlet Pimpernel. Students, scholars and lay enthusiasts of cinema history, cultural history and media studies will find this an accessible yet scholarly read.

He is recognised by the Israeli state as one of the Righteous among the Nations. This book examines both Wallenberg’s activities during the Holocaust and the ways posterity has remembered him. It explores secret Swedish diplomacy and how Wallenberg was transformed over time into a Swedish brand. It considers the political aspects of Wallenberg’s Americanisation and analyses his portrayals in music, film and television. Representations of Wallenberg as a monument are discussed with special reference to Swedish and Hungarian examples. The question of how Wallenberg’s memory can and should be kept alive in future is an essential issue related to the politics of memory.

Download or read book RAF Evaders written by Oliver Clutton-Brock and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 959 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of the British airmen shot down over Western Europe who evaded capture by the Germans and made their way to Allied territory during World War II. During the five years from May 1940 to May 1945 several thousand Allied airmen, forced to abandon their aircraft behind enemy lines, evaded capture and reached freedom, by land, sea and air. The territory held by the Germans was immense—from Norway and Denmark in the north, through Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg to the south of France—and initially there was no organization to help the men on the run. The first one to assist the evaders and escapers (“E & E” as the Americans called them) was the PAT line, along the Mediterranean coast to Perpignan and down the Spanish border; named after a naval officer Pat O’Leary, from 1942 it became the PAO line. Next was the Comet line, from Brussels to the Pyrenees. Thousands of brave people were to be involved for whom, if caught, the penalty was death. Theirs is a stirring and awe-inspiring story. Respected historian Oliver Clutton-Brock has researched in depth this secret world of evasion, uncovering some treachery and many hitherto unpublished details, operations and photos. It is a tremendous reference work, written in his own colorful style with numerous anecdotes, which fills a gap of knowledge formerly unavailable to historians, professional or amateur. Packed the information, key figure biographies and listings—2, 094 evaders identified—this is a valuable testimony to the courage of all those involved.

Book The Culture of History

    Book Details:
  • Author : Billie Melman
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2006-06-22
  • ISBN : 0191538027
  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book The Culture of History written by Billie Melman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-06-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and widely researched book, Billie Melman explores the culture of history during the age of modernity. Her book is about the production of English pasts, the multiplicity of their representations and the myriad ways in which the English looked at history (sometimes in the most literal sense of 'looking') and made use of it in a social and material urban world, and in their imagination. Covering the period between the Napoleonic Wars and the Coronation of 1953, Melman recoups the work of antiquarians, historians, novelists and publishers, wax modellers, cartoonists and illustrators, painters, playwrights and actors, reformers and educationalists, film stars and their fans, musicians and composers, opera-fans, and radio listeners. Avoiding a separation between 'high' and 'low' culture, Melman analyses nineteenth-century plebeian culture and twentieth-century mass-culture and their venues - like Madame Tussaud's Chamber of Horrors, panoramas, national monuments like the Tower of London, and films - as well as studying forms of 'minority' art - notably opera. She demonstrates how history was produced and how it circulated from texts, visual images, and sounds, to people and places and back to a variety of texts and images. While paying attention to individuals' making-do with culture, Melman considers constrictions of class, gender, the state, and the market-place on the consumption of history. Focusing on two privileged pasts, the Tudor monarchy and the French Revolution, the latter seen as an English event and as the framework for narrating and comprehending history, Melman shows that during the nineteenth century, the most popular, longest-enduring, and most highly commercialized images of the past represented it not as cosy and secure, but rather as dangerous, disorderly, and violent. The past was also imagined as an urban place, rather than as rural. In Melman's account, City not green Country, is the centre of a popular version of the past whose central Images are the dungeon, the gallows, and the guillotine.

Book The Spirit of America Party

Download or read book The Spirit of America Party written by Tom O’Donnell and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-31 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen chapters will touch on the decline and fall of the American Spirit. From the defeat of our war on drugs to the greatest military defeat ever visited upon American soil 9-1-1 While politicians danced on their party platform shouting we are the strongest nation on the face of the earth. The box cutter of terror was being sharpened in a cave in the Hindu Kush. An over medicated nation preoccupied with Academy award winners that failed to hear the giant steps of fire worshipers. Osama Bin Laden has taught the Moslem world that the United States is a paper tiger and our giant war ships can be sunk by a dinghy. A Nation who has lost touch with its roots and is ripe for Europeanization. Supreme court judges who want us to be ruled by The Hague. Communism has temporarily failed in the Soviet Union but has found a wet nurse in US liberalism. The media controls the mind of many and is a willing accomplice to the lies and charades of the demoncrat party. The American military is the last shred of American decency left and has more enemies in the USA than in the world. Religion has been downsized and replaced with Oscar worship. Abortion claims two victims. The mother and the child. Both are harmed by two villains. The politician and the butcher. Special interest groups have to be driven out of the senate auction house. The largest campaign contribution in any form should not be greater than one dollar. Housewives should have to approve the budget. The three biggest killers of the spirit of America are drugs, divorce and demoncrats. The CYA, the FIB, the State department and the Pentagon all need a make over. They all failed us on 911. The first casualty should be PC lawyers. We need wartime consulters. It is not Bush's job to get Bin Laden it is theirs. Anyone who thinks that this war will not last at least ten more years is living under false pretenses. Going to Iraq has given us a forward staging area for the invasion of Iran. A great strategic move. We bypassed all the minefields from the UN to Paris to Turkey to Saudi. Soon all who witnessed the greatness of the United States will be gone and the liars will rewrite history. This book will bring you home to a God Loving Nation of Dads and Moms who kept freedom alive and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Never forget you are a special breed. You are an American and the spirit of America is the great spirit. The red in the banner is for blood spilled for you and me by young people who gave up all their tomorrows so we could stand together and keep the vow. You will enjoy the New York 50's humor. You will get sentimental. You will get good flashbacks. You will see this country in the eyes of one who saw how great we were. Yet poor by monetary standards but rich in children and oneness in love. We were the servants yet we were kings. We were drug free. We tried to be better. We kept the vow. We served God and country in war and peace.

Book Swordsmen of the Screen

Download or read book Swordsmen of the Screen written by Jeffrey Richards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study of the genre of swashbuckling films received wide critical acclaim when it was first published in 1977. Jeffrey Richards assesses the contributions to the genre of directors, designers and fencing masters, as well as of the stars themselves, and devotes several chapters to the principal subjects if the swashbucklers – pirates, highwaymen, cavaliers and knights. The result is to recall, however fleetingly, the golden days of the silver screen. Reviews of the original edition: ‘An intelligent, scholarly, well-written account of adventure films, this work is sensitive both to cinema history and to the literary origins of the "swashbuckler"....Essential for any library with books on film, it may very well be the definitive book on its subject.’ – Library Journal

Book The Other Schindlers

Download or read book The Other Schindlers written by Agnes Grunwald-Spier and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2010-12-26 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to Thomas Keneally's book Schindler's Ark, and the film based on it, Schindler's List, we have become more aware of the fact that, in the midst of Hitler's extermination of the Jews, courage and humanity could still overcome evil. While 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazi regime, some were saved through the actions of non-Jews whose consciences would not allow them to pass by on the other side, and many are honoured by Yad Vashem as 'Righteous Among the Nations' for their actions. As a baby, Agnes Grunwald-Spier was herself saved from the horrors of Auschwitz by an unknown official, and is now a trustee of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. She has collected together the stories of thirty individuals who rescued Jews, and these provide a new insight into why these people were prepared to risk so much for their fellow men and women. With a foreword by Sir Martin Gilbert, one of the leading experts on the subject, this is an ultimately uplifting account of how some good deeds really do shine in a weary world.

Book Game Theory and Postwar American Literature

Download or read book Game Theory and Postwar American Literature written by Michael Wainwright and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If game theory, the mathematical simulation of rational decision-making first axiomatically established by the Hungarian-born American mathematician John von Neumann, is to prove worthy of literary hermeneutics, then critics must be able to apply its models to texts written without a working knowledge of von Neumann's discipline in mind. Reading such iconic novels as Fahrenheit 451, In Cold Blood, and Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye from the perspective of the four most frequently encountered coordination problems - the Stag Hunt, the Prisoner's Dilemma, Chicken, and Deadlock, Game Theory and Postwar American Literature illustrates the significant contribution of mathematical models to literary interpretation. The interdisciplinary approach of this book contributes to an understanding of the historical, political, and social contexts that surround the texts produced in the post-Cold War years, as well as providing a comprehensive model of joining game theory and literary criticism.

Book Modernism and the Women s Popular Romance in Britain 1885 1925

Download or read book Modernism and the Women s Popular Romance in Britain 1885 1925 written by Martin Hipsky and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s mass-market romances have their precursors in late Victorian popular novels written by and for women. In Modernism and the Women’s Popular Romance Martin Hipsky scrutinizes some of the best-selling British fiction from the period 1885 to 1925, the era when romances, especially those by British women, were sold and read more widely than ever before or since. Recent scholarship has explored the desires and anxieties addressed by both “low modern” and “high modernist” British culture in the decades straddling the turn of the twentieth century. In keeping with these new studies, Hipsky offers a nuanced portrait of an important phenomenon in the history of modern fiction. He puts popular romances by Mrs. Humphry Ward, Marie Corelli, the Baroness Orczy, Florence Barclay, Rebecca West, Elinor Glyn, Victoria Cross, Ethel Dell, and E. M. Hull into direct relationship with the fiction of Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, James Joyce, and D. H. Lawrence, among other modernist greats.
