Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Cinematographer, Vol. 11: A Technical and Educational Publication, Espousing Progress and Art in Motion Picture Photography; December 1930 This perfection of detail is probably best understood when it is known that the men responsible for the new camera are Albert Tondreau, Frank Murphy, and Fred Gage, A. S. C. For, in addition to the technical skill naturally indicated by their positions as heads, respectively, of the Camera Machine Shop, Electrical Engineering, and Laboratory departments of the War ner bros-first National organization, these three men possess an uniquely intimate knowledge of the technical needs and troubles of studio cinematographers. Therefore, when]. L. Warner gave this triumvirate carte blanche to proceed with the development of a camera that would be perfectly suited to the needs of studio cinematography, his selection automatically guaranteed the success of the project. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Cinematographer, Vol. 11: A Technical and Educational Publication, Espousing Progress and Art in Motion Picture Photography; September, 1930 The selection of lenses for 70 millimeter use is especially important. One of the chief photographic complaints against wide-film has been that there was only too often a marked falling off in definition at the extremities of the picture. The only cure for this is the use of lenses of the very highest quality - the very best of the best. Of course, any cameraman worthy of the name will take great pains in the selection of his lens equipment, but in selecting wide-film objectives, he must take even more extraordinary precautions. This naturally means an endless amount of testing before even one lens is chosen, but it is well worth it, for only the best lenses can give perfect Grandeur pictures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Cinematographer, Vol. 11: A Technical and Educational Publication, Espousing Progress and Art in Motion Picture Photography; May, 1930 In the early models of the B. 8 H. Printer, the printing light was controlled through the mobility of the jaws of the printing aperture. By enlarging or reducing the printing aperture more or less exposure was given the positive film for a uniform running speed of the machine. A refinement developed a few years ago added a new method of light control called the back shutter, which, as its name implies, consists of a variable aperture shutter located at ap proximately mid-distance between the printing light and the aperture. The versatility of this method of light control is so great that it permitted to dispense with the varying in width of the printing aperture itself while retaining a great range of light intensities easily controlled from the outside of the ap paratus. The 'back shutter proved invaluable in the development of the triple adjustment sound attachment. Because it permitted to stabilize the printing aperture to a standard 5-16 dimension which is also the height dimension of the triple mattes. The back shutter method of light control is applied to the independent printing of both the picture or the sound record, as the occasion arises. Now let us turn for a moment to a consideration of the actual manner in which the three masks are arranged so as to control the final result in the print. At Fig. 3 is shown the complete unit so that its action can be more clearly visualized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Cinematographer, Vol. 11: A Technical and Educational Publication, Espousing Progress and Art in Motion Picture Photography; October 1930 Now, the question arises as to what they see, and how it will affect them. Children may be educated by the movies. They may be taught to appreciate the artistic, and to get a glimpse of art. They may, on the other hand, be given impressions which are useless or even detrimental. The women of Birmingham, England, recently complained about the nervous strain which certain types of thriller movies pro duced among children. Various other complaints are often made, many, no doubt, by the over cautious and over sensitive, but many others are worthy of consideration. Anything so capable as the motion picture, of leaving vivid impressions, is bound to be a powerful factor in the world. Children receive their ideas of life from the movies, and likewise, American life is shown to the foreign countries. There is much danger that false impressions be given, and never forgotten. But, aside from being a mere amusement, it should be remembered that a good picture must be an artistic achieve ment as well. Indeed, all the arts should be combined, and the artistic potentialities are boundless. But, unfortunately, the average picture is of an inferior type, and only upon rare occasions is there produced a picture of artistic worth. The reasons for failure to reach a high standard of art is often failure to realize that motion picture work is an art. It deserves the same preparation, interest, and devotion required by the painter, the sculptor, the musician, or any other sincere artist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Cinematographer, Vol. 18: March, 1937 Tests made with it by Victor Milner, in prepara tion for his present production, for instance, have indicated its superiority to either previous method in scenes in which any considerable area is included. Hitherto, regardless of the method used, there was generally an increase in contrast, and little detail could be preserved except in the immediate foreground and in highlights. In closer shots often all that would be visible would be the actors' faces and shadowy figures moving against a black background. Using the new film, the scene appears much more nearly as it would normally appear on a moon lit night, With a natural amount of detail visible in the shadows, and a considerably broader scale of gradation.
