Book To Paradise

  • ISBN : 0385547943
  • Pages : 720 pages

Download or read book To Paradise written by Hanya Yanagihara and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • From the award-winning, best-selling author of the classic A Little Life—a bold, brilliant novel spanning three centuries and three different versions of the American experiment, about lovers, family, loss and the elusive promise of utopia. A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: VOGUE • ESQUIRE • NPR • GOODREADS To Paradise is a fin de siècle novel of marvelous literary effect, but above all it is a work of emotional genius. The great power of this remarkable novel is driven by Yanagihara’s understanding of the aching desire to protect those we love—partners, lovers, children, friends, family, and even our fellow citizens—and the pain that ensues when we cannot. In an alternate version of 1893 America, New York is part of the Free States, where people may live and love whomever they please (or so it seems). The fragile young scion of a distinguished family resists betrothal to a worthy suitor, drawn to a charming music teacher of no means. In a 1993 Manhattan besieged by the AIDS epidemic, a young Hawaiian man lives with his much older, wealthier partner, hiding his troubled childhood and the fate of his father. And in 2093, in a world riven by plagues and governed by totalitarian rule, a powerful scientist’s damaged granddaughter tries to navigate life without him—and solve the mystery of her husband’s disappearances. These three sections comprise an ingenious symphony, as recurring notes and themes deepen and enrich one another: A townhouse in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village; illness, and treatments that come at a terrible cost; wealth and squalor; the weak and the strong; race; the definition of family, and of nationhood; the dangerous righteousness of the powerful, and of revolutionaries; the longing to find a place in an earthly paradise, and the gradual realization that it can’t exist. What unites not just the characters, but these Americas, are their reckonings with the qualities that make us human: Fear. Love. Shame. Need. Loneliness.

Download or read book Atlantic and American Notes Classic Reprint written by George P. Neele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atlantic and American Notes It affords me much pleasure, in response to a suggestion made by some of my fellow-officers, to give a short sketch of the journey made by the representatives of the London and North Western Railway Company in America during the spring and early summer of last year. Our party consisted of His Grace the Duke of Sutherland; his friends, Sir Henry and Lady Green; Mr. Russell, widely known as "The Times" correspondent in the days of the Crimean War; Mr. Henry Wright; our Directors, The Marquis of Stafford, M.P.; Mr. Bickersteth; Mr. Knowles, M.P.; Mr. Stephen; Mr. George Crosfield; and last, but not least, one who was intimately connected with the whole scheme of the journey, with whom I had many lengthy consultations and communications in perfecting its programme, and whose lamented death has now thrown a dark shadow across our reminiscences, otherwise unclouded - I allude to Mr. Henry Crosfield, our well-known auditor. We left London on Good Friday, April 15th, and stayed for the night in Liverpool. On starting from Liverpool we experienced the usual scene of confusion at the Landing Stage, enhanced by the fact that there were three steamers, besides our own, all starting with the same tide; by one of which a large number of Norwegian emigrants took their departure, and the quay was consequently congested with an unusual quantity of passengers and baggage; after a while we managed to shake ourselves free and find our way to the tender appointed to convey us to the "Gallia," one of the noble steamers of the Cunard Fleet, by which we were to make our outward journey. Our friends said "farewell," the tender left our ship's side, and steadily we steamed out of the Mersey. After some time spent in roaming up and down the vessel, in which everything was strange to us, we settled down and obtained possession of the separate cabins, called "State Rooms," set aside for our use. Book Lost in the Meritocracy

Download or read book Lost in the Meritocracy written by Walter Kirn and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book A Daily Beast Best Book of the Year A Huffington Post Best Book of the Year From elementary school on, Walter Kirn knew how to stay at the top of his class: He clapped erasers, memorized answer keys, and parroted his teachers’ pet theories. But when he launched himself eastward to an Ivy League university, Kirn discovered that the temple of higher learning he had expected was instead just another arena for more gamesmanship, snobbery, and social climbing. In this whip-smart memoir of kissing-up, cramming, and competition, Lost in the Meritocracy reckons the costs of an educational system where the point is simply to keep accumulating points and never to look back—or within.

All the great West beyond was quite unknown to most of the people, and the few travellers who had seen its vast prairies and great rivers, and lofty mo'untain chains, were regarded with almost as much respect and admiration as had been given to the early voyagers across the At lantic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bridging the Atlantic: A Discussion of the Problems and Methods of Americanization It was one day when crossing from aft to fore of the monster ocea'n-liner on which we sailed back to America that some one facetiously remarked, Well, one can practically walk dry shod from Europe to America. These long new ships are regular bridges, for by the time you get to the bow from the stern, she has touched the other shore. When I viewed and talked with some of the immigrants in the steerage and later with other passengers who rarely moved out of the luxurious Palm Garden or First Saloon end of the boat, my heart was a little heavy, for it seemed to me that from third cabin to first was leagues and leagues farther than from France to New York harbor. Book Rescuing Socrates

Download or read book Rescuing Socrates written by Roosevelt Montas and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Dominican-born academic tells the story of how the Great Books transformed his life—and why they have the power to speak to people of all backgrounds What is the value of a liberal education? Traditionally characterized by a rigorous engagement with the classics of Western thought and literature, this approach to education is all but extinct in American universities, replaced by flexible distribution requirements and ever-narrower academic specialization. Many academics attack the very idea of a Western canon as chauvinistic, while the general public increasingly doubts the value of the humanities. In Rescuing Socrates, Dominican-born American academic Roosevelt Montás tells the story of how a liberal education transformed his life, and offers an intimate account of the relevance of the Great Books today, especially to members of historically marginalized communities. Montás emigrated from the Dominican Republic to Queens, New York, when he was twelve and encountered the Western classics as an undergraduate in Columbia University’s renowned Core Curriculum, one of America’s last remaining Great Books programs. The experience changed his life and determined his career—he went on to earn a PhD in English and comparative literature, serve as director of Columbia’s Center for the Core Curriculum, and start a Great Books program for low-income high school students who aspire to be the first in their families to attend college. Weaving together memoir and literary reflection, Rescuing Socrates describes how four authors—Plato, Augustine, Freud, and Gandhi—had a profound impact on Montás’s life. In doing so, the book drives home what it’s like to experience a liberal education—and why it can still remake lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Briton in America Ever since the days of Christopher Columbus, America has been the cynosure of Europe. The pricking spur of curiosity which drove that dauntless Genoese across the Atlantic has driven, in his wake, one unbroken line of explorers and observers. I am simply the latest - and least - along that trail. The interest of Europe in America is a healthy curiosity and deserves to be satisfied. For the Old World has much to learn from the New. In her search for Utopia, Europe has looked East and she has not found it, but found decay and death. 80 She ever turns again to the West, and dreams dreams, as Plato dreamt them of Old, of the fabled Atlantis beyond the pillars of Hercules, where the people are always at peace with one another and live a perfect life.1 Then she goes to find out whether those dreams are true.
