Book Ridiculously Amazing Schools

Download or read book Ridiculously Amazing Schools written by Tracey Smith and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine a school with a culture so positive that everyone thrives: students and educators alike. Classrooms are lively, students feel they're part of a community that cares about them, and teachers are happy and productive. Too good to be true? Not in a ridiculously amazing school. There are many of them all across the country. What are their secrets to success? In this book, principal Tracey Smith and Jeff Waller, co-author of The 7 Mindsets to Live Your Ultimate Life, show how taking care of educators first--and cultivating supportive relationships--results in profound and positive changes. Smith and Waller explore the five key elements of what they call courageous schools: schools that understand it takes a "whole" teacher to teach the "whole" child. They reveal the one variable that stands out as a predictor of sustained excellence...and it isn't about leadership style, teaching practices, or demographics. There's no question that teaching is hard work with little instant gratification, and too many educators go to work each day feeling unappreciated and overburdened. But it shouldn't--and doesn't--have to be that way. Smith and Waller offer practical solutions and a road map to drive real and meaningful change within the school and classroom. It's possible to create a nurturing climate where teachers are respected and have the power to transform lives...not just their students' lives, but their own.

Book Urban Grassroots Movements in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Urban Grassroots Movements in Central and Eastern Europe written by Kerstin Jacobsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn about collective action across Central and Eastern Europe by focusing on activism within urban spaces? This volume argues that the recent resurgence of urban grassroots mobilisation represents a new phase in the development of post-socialist civil societies and that these civil societies have significantly more vitality than is commonly perceived. The case studies here reflect the diversity and complexity of post-socialist urban movements, capturing also the extent to which the laboratory of urban politics is richly illustrative of the complex nexus of state-society-market relations within post-socialism. The grassroots campaigns and actions reflect the new social cleavages and increased polarisation as a consequence of neoliberal urbanisation and global integration, as well as the transformation of state power and authority in the region. Studying urban activism in Central and Eastern Europe is instructive for urban movements scholars generally, as it forces us to acknowledge the variety of forms that contention can take and the usefulness of embedding the study of urban movements within a larger understanding of civil society.

Book excerpt: Andre met his best friend Amy on a night like tonight. The way Amy tells it she had to stop him from climbing over the bar at Aunty Bob’s to punch the bartender, though if you ask Andre he’ll say, “What? That never happened. I don’t even know what you’re saying to me right now.” Now Amy is worryingly missing in action, and Andre goes to Aunty Bob’s on a quest to find her. No sooner does he walk in with his depressingly heterosexual date than his best hat is spirited away by a lesbian in the throes of breaking up with her girlfriend. She in turn has it stolen from her when she starts a fight with two twinks at the bar. The hat makes its way around Aunty Bob’s from one head to another, giving glimpses into the dozens of stories playing out at the same time, unaware of each other but colliding in catastrophic ways. Can Andre find Amy before this party devolves into a nightmare of broken hearts, malevolent drag queens, and spontaneous human combustion? Or has it always happened this way, every night, at Aunty Bob’s Quake City Club?

Book Thomas Lanier Clingman

Download or read book Thomas Lanier Clingman written by Thomas E. Jeffrey and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Lanier Clingman: Fire Eater from the Carolina Mountains is the first book-length biography of one of the most important, colorful, and controversial figures in nineteenth-century American life. A man of enormous intellect and intense ambition whose ultimate goal was nothing less than the presidency, Clingman was a lawyer, entrepreneur, Civil War general, inventor, amateur scientist, explorer, and, as a U.S. congressman and senator, one of the foremost champions of southern rights. Thomas E. Jeffrey's explanation of how a leading advocate of this cause could thrive within an environment where slavery was only a marginal institution provides fresh insights into the political culture of southern Appalachia, the character of the southern rights movement, and the coming of the Civil War.
