A. Hauptreihe«.

Book Studies on Old High German Syntax

Download or read book Studies on Old High German Syntax written by Katrin Axel and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-19 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is the first book-length study on Old High German syntax from a generative perspective in twenty years. It provides an in-depth exploration of the Old High German pre-verb-second grammar by answering the following questions: To what extent did generalized verb movement exist in Old High German? Was there already obligatory XP-movement to the left periphery in declarative root clauses? What deviations from the linear verb-second restriction are attested and what do such phenomena reveal about the structure of the left sentence periphery? Did verb placement play the same role in sentence typing as in the modern verb-second languages? A further major topic is null subjects: It is claimed that Old High German was a partial pro-drop language. All these issues are addressed from a comparative-diachronic perspective by integrating research on other Old Germanic languages, in particular on Old English and Gothic. This book is of interest to all those working in the fields of comparative Germanic syntax and historical linguistics.

Book Infinitives at the Syntax Semantics Interface

Download or read book Infinitives at the Syntax Semantics Interface written by Lukasz Jedrzejowski and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major aim of this volume is to investigate infinitival structures from a diachronic point of view and, simultaneously, to embed the diachronic findings into the ongoing theoretical discussion on non-finite clauses in general. All contributions subscribe to a dynamic approach to infinitival clauses by investigating their origin, development and loss in miscellaneous patterns and across different languages.

Book The syntax of functional left peripheries

Download or read book The syntax of functional left peripheries written by Julia Bacskai-Atkari and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a novel analysis for the syntax of the clausal left periphery, focusing on various finite clause types and especially on embedded clauses. It investigates how the appearance of multiple projections interacts with economy principles and with the need for marking syntactic information overtly. In particular, the proposed account shows that a flexible approach assuming only a minimal number of projections is altogether favourable to cartographic approaches. The main focus of the book is on West Germanic, in particular on English and German, yet other Germanic and non-Germanic languages are also discussed for comparative purposes.

Book Grammaticalization Paths of English and High German Existential Constructions

Download or read book Grammaticalization Paths of English and High German Existential Constructions written by Simone E. Pfenninger and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existential constructions are a fundamental feature of many Indo-European languages, and constructions with non-referential subjects have developed in all of the latter, albeit at different stages in their histories. High German does not feature a prototypical existential construction that is equivalent in syntactic and pragmatic function and semantic meaning to the English existential there-construction. How did a prototypical existential structure originate in English? Why is it that High German has never developed such a construction? Has it ever shown a tendency towards developing one? How did two closely related languages such as English and High German come to differ so much with respect to these constructions? By means of investigating a variety of historical and contemporary data this study shows that not only semantic, pragmatic and syntactic factors are involved, which decide the choice of a certain construction, but also very much the more general different linguistic development that the two languages underwent in the course of time.

Book Althochdeutsche Grammatik II

Download or read book Althochdeutsche Grammatik II written by Hans Ulrich Schmid and published by de Gruyter. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Diachronic Clues to Synchronic Grammar

Download or read book Diachronic Clues to Synchronic Grammar written by Eric Fuss and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume emphasizes a new line of thinking in generative grammar which acknowledges that certain synchronic properties of languages can only be fully understood if diachronic data is taken into consideration. The central topics addressed in this collection of papers are (1) a critical assessment of the hypothesis that certain apparently synchronic generalizations are actually the result of the mechanisms of language change, (2) an inquiry into how diachronic data can be used to evaluate and shape formal analyses of particular synchronic phenomena. Reviving the interest in diachronic explanations for synchronic data, the contributions provide novel and original diachronic accounts of phenomena that up to now have escaped a deeper synchronic explanation, including the nature of EPP features, gaps in the distribution of complementizer agreement, and counterexamples to the generalization that rich verbal inflection correlates with verb movement.

Book Syntax and Morphology of Yiddish Dialects

Download or read book Syntax and Morphology of Yiddish Dialects written by Lea Schäfer and published by Georg Olms Verlag. This book was released on 2023 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Advances in Comparative Germanic Syntax

Download or read book Advances in Comparative Germanic Syntax written by Artemis Alexiadou and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains a selection of papers presented at the 21st and 22nd Comparative Germanic Syntax Workshop held at the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of Stuttgart. The contributions provide insightful discussions of several topics of current interest for syntactic theory on the basis of comparative data from a wide range of contemporary and historical Germanic languages. The theoretical issues explored include: the left periphery, with a number of contributions touching on the pros and contras of cartographic accounts; different aspects of word order and how it arises from movement and clause structure; the interplay of thematic relations and case theory with the realization of DPs; and the treatment of finiteness and modal structures. This book is of interest to syntacticians working in a comparative perspective and to advanced undergraduates.

Book History of German Negation

Download or read book History of German Negation written by Agnes Jäger and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first comprehensive overview over the history of negation in German. It addresses both the development of the negation particles as well as the diachrony of indefinites in the scope of negation and the phenomenon of Negative Concord. Being based on a corpus study of several Old and Middle High German texts, it comprises a wealth of historical examples with additional comparison to Modern Standard German and dialects, as well as crosslinguistic data from a variety of languages. The findings are placed in the context of typological research and are analysed in terms of current syntactic and semantic theory of negation arguing for an unchanged underlying syntactic structure, with changes in the lexical filling of NegP and in the lexical features of indefinites resulting in crucial changes in the syntactic patterns of negation. This book is of interest to scholars of German linguistics, historical linguists, as well as anyone working in the field of negation.
