Book Alternating Currents Or Counter revolution

Download or read book Alternating Currents Or Counter revolution written by Lewis T. Evans and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewis Evans and Richard Meade place New Zealand's current institutional arrangements for its electricity sector within the context of successive waves of economic reform. They compare these arrangements with developments internationally, drawing together lessons for future policy making both in New Zealand and overseas. Alternating currents or counter-revolution? is a work of political economy - and the book carefully analyses the interplay between technology, economics and politics that has at different times driven the sector. Controversially, the authors argue that the market reforms of the 1980s and 1990s provided greater supply security than the more centralised arrangements prevailing in the past - and that New Zealand's reversion to more centralised and political control since the late 1990s has resulted in an unstable half-way house that hinders private electricity investments and reinforces this trend.

Book The Elements of Alternating Currents

Download or read book The Elements of Alternating Currents written by W. S. Franklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Alternating Currents Two years' use of Franklin and Williamson's Elements of Alternating Currents, and many valuable suggestions from friends, make it possible to issue a greatly improved edition, which is now offered to the public. It is not expected that this text will be found easy reading, but it is certain that any one of moderate ability can gain by serious study of this text a clear understanding of the principles of alternating currents and of the theory of the various types of alternating current machinery. Aside from the minor changes which occur on almost every page of the book, this new edition differs from the old in having a very complete series of practical problems with answers. The alterations in the chapters on the Alternator, on the Transformer, on the Synchronous Motor, on the Rotary Converter and on the Induction Motor, are especially noteworthy. The last five chapters have been added to give the student a general description of some of the ordinary types of alternating current apparatus and the conditions under which it is operated. These chapters are intended to be read in connection with the corresponding chapters that treat on the theory of the apparatus under consideration. The authors' thanks are due to Professor Morgan Brooks for many valuable suggestions, to Messrs. C. M. Crawford and H. W. Brown for assistance in preparing copy, in solving problems and in reading proof, and to the manufacturing companies who have kindly furnished a number of the cuts used in the chapters that have been added. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating Currents: Their Theory, Generation, and Transformation In the following pages an attempt is made to furnish the reader with a general account of the principles, construction, and use of alternate-current measuring instruments, generators, motors, and transforming machinery. Special attention is devoted to methods of testing. The first three chapters contain a sketch of alternate-current theory. The author has tried, as far as possible, to exclude everything of purely academic or historical interest; on tho other hand, ho has not hesitated to devote a good deal of space to matters which are either not generally understood, or which are of too recent origin to have found their way into many text-hooks. The author desires to express his indebtedness to tho various firms who supplied him with working drawings and placed other information at his disposal; especially would he like to mention in this connection The Electric Construction Co., Ltd.; Messrs. Everett, Edgcumbe and Co.; Messrs. Kelvin and James White, Ltd.; and Messrs, Nalder Bros, and Thompson, Ltd. The bulk of the illustrations have been specially prepared for this book. Some new matter has been added. Together with some rearrangement, and the writer sincerelv trusts that the result will be more continuous and accurate reading. Such criticisms as have been ventured upon the first edition have been very acceptably expressed with a view to improvement. And entirely of a non-captious character, so that the writer desires to take this opportunity to thank his critics and to reinvite their good ofl'ices.
