Book The Last Great Southern Adventure

Download or read book The Last Great Southern Adventure written by Olivia Page and published by Halycyon Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time in New Zealand's recent past, when every country town, had one or more helicopters based there involved with wild venison recovery to feed a growing export trade. As the wild deer population was reduced and deer farming became widespread, helicopter recovery operations slowly ceased in most locations. Fiordland and South Westland today remain the only areas with full-time venison recovery helicopters still flying. Professional photographer Olivia Page was given the opportunity to record WARO (wild animal recovery operations) in Fiordland over the summer of 2010-2011, the result was 7000 images the best of which are shown in this book, recording an industry which is going through change and may soon be gone forever. A bonus DVD is included, with documentary footage of Dick Deaker and Jeff Carter, on venison recovery missions in Fiordland. Shot by award winning filmmaker Marion Poizeau.

Book A Hunter in Paradise

Download or read book A Hunter in Paradise written by Zeff Veronese and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'Zeff Veronese is one of this country's longest and most respected chamois and tahr hunters ... His prowess with a rifle and camera have been long known and achieved national recognition within the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association. The collection of absorbing tales and photographs this back country author has provided, strongly conveys honest passion for our wild places and a sincere respect for the game animals hunted'--Kevin J. Whitelaw, New Zealand's Hunting Legends. Why do I hunt? That is a very hard question to answer. Both my grandparents were hunters and so was my father, my brothers and some of my uncles. I grew up in Italy during the war and the years after, in very tough times. However, the hunting instinct was never far away ... When we arrived in New Zealand, we found it to be a goldmine for a hunter and made the most of it. The first ten years we hunted mainly for meat and always had a freezer full of game meat ... Perhaps the last 40 years I have mainly hunted for trophies. Sometimes when in a good spot for a few days, I might see 30 or 40 animals and as they have no trophy value I don't fire a shot but happily film the events. Hunting is still good for me because I enjoy being in the wild. Camaraderie is an important ingredient on a hunt; there is nothing better than being in a tent or a hut with friends who have the same interests and are happy to share their funny stories after a hard day in the mountains"--page [4] of cover.

Book It s A Bit Rugged Mate

Download or read book It s A Bit Rugged Mate written by Al Lester and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2014-07-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once described as 'Barry Crump meets Fred Dagg', 'Big Al' Lester is the modern-day master of the hunting genre. 'I'm often asked what inspired me to take up writing yarns about the mishaps and mayhem that I have endured while venturing into the New Zealand bush.' 'In truth, I am an average to poor hunter who has had more hunting cock-ups than the rest of the country combined. For every deer I've successfully shot, dozens have escaped only to hide in the bush peering back at me, clearly laughing at my stupidity. I have always managed to see the funny side of the situation and had a good old laugh at myself. I began to wonder if my stuff-ups, with a bit of humour and mayhem thrown in, might just make for good reading – the oddball, unusual, humorous, weird and fun side of hunting – and gave it a go. I must have got something right.'—'Big Al' Lester It's a Bit Rugged, Mate compiles the biggest and best yarns from Big Al's first three books – plenty of fun for those with a good keen sense of humour and a love for New Zealand's wild outdoors. From Acclimatisation Societies, New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association, both at branch and national level, including a term as president, Ducks Unlimited and a host of other similar organisations. He served a term on the National Recreational Hunting Advisory Committee, was convener of the Clevedon Game Fair in 1989, and was trophy convener for the NZ Exhibition of Hunting in 1978. Book A Bunk for the Night REVISED A Guide to New Zealand s Best Backcountry Huts Revised

Download or read book A Bunk for the Night REVISED A Guide to New Zealand s Best Backcountry Huts Revised written by Shaun Barnett Spearpoint (Rob Brown & Geoff) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand has a huge range of backcountry huts, most of which are available for public use. Some can sleep 80 people, while others are tiny two-bunk affairs with not even room to stand up in. They are located in our mountains, on the edges of our fiords, coastlines and lakes, beside rivers, in the bush and on the open tops. Together they form an internationally unique network of backcountry shelter, and these huts, so often full of character and history, are destinations in their own right. 'A Bunk for the Night' offers an updated guide to over 200 of the best of these huts to visit. This inspirational guide has been written by Shaun Barnett, Rob Brown and Geoff Spearpoint, the authors of the seminal, best-selling history of 'New Zealand's backcountry huts Shelter from the Storm'. Featuring well-known tramping huts in the major mountain axis of the North Island, Tongariro and Egmont national parks, as well as the Southern Alps, Fiordland and Stewart Island, the authors have also scoured the country for other interesting huts in out-of-the-way places, such as those in the Bay of Islands, on Banks Peninsula, in the Whanganui hinterland, the Takitimu Mountains and the dry ranges of Marlborough. From the famous huts of our Great Walk tracks to the obscurity of bivs with names like 'Adventure' and 'Brass Monkey', this is a wonderful smorgasbord of must-visit huts. Fully illustrated throughout and with all the information required to visit these iconic huts, 'A Bunk for the Night' is an essential book for anyone tramping in New Zealand.
