The islands are about 70 square miles of land area scattered over 750,000 sq. mi. of the Western Pacific. Approximately 32,000 are of working age with 39% employed, 61% unemployed or inactive. The largest group of Marshallese living outside the islands can be found at the foothills of the Ozarks in Springdale, Arkansas. Today roughly 6,000-8,000 Marshallese live in Springdale, and about fifty percent of Tyson Chicken's floor staff are from the Marshall Islands. Dzongkha or Bhutanese is spoken by about 130,000 people in Bhutan, where it is the national language, and also in Nepal and India. It is a South Tibetic language closely related to Sikkimese, and to a number of other languages spoken in Bhutan, such as Chocangaca, Brokpa, Brokkat and Lakha. Dzongkha is written with the Tibetan alphabet, which was introduced by Thonmi Sambhota, however the main written language in Bhutan is Classical Tibetan, which differs as much from Dzongkha as French from Latin. There is also an official way of writing Dzongkha with the Latin alphabet known as Roman Dzongkha.

There are between 7 and 13 main regional groups of Chinese (depending on classification scheme), of which the most spoken, by far, is Mandarin with about 850 million speakers. The Chinese language has over 1 million speakers in the United States. Romanization is the process of transcribing a language into the Latin script. There are many systems of Romanization for the Chinese languages due to the lack of a native phonetic transcription until modern times. Chinese is first known to have been written in Latin characters by Western Christian missionaries in the 16th century. Today the most common Romanization standard for Standard Chinese is Hanyu Pinyin. The entire Chinese character corpus since antiquity comprises well over 20,000 characters, of which only roughly 10,000 are now commonly in use. However Chinese characters should not be confused with Chinese words; since most Chinese words are made up of two or more different characters, there are many times more Chinese words than there are characters. Our translator, Bin Hu, brings a range of culturally nuanced vocabulary from his unique life experiences to his translations. He was raised in old Beijing and worked in the professional capital. Due to his diverse life experience, he understands a range of Chinese from formal classic Mandarin to street slang. He has replicated his rural-urban mix of lifestyles in the U.S., living in Arizona ranching country and Washington, D.C. This range of lifestyles has gifted him with an equal range of vocabularies, situational terms, and phrases in both languages and cultures. Book excerpt: This book is the first ever major effort to document and study hundreds of texts from an African (Ugandan) oral culture for children – folktales, riddles, and rhymes – and at the same time to make them available in the local Languages and to focus on their cultural and national value. The author surveys the history of collecting in Uganda and situates the texts in their broader geographical, historical, socio-cultural and educational Setting, including the early collecting efforts of heritage-minded Ugandans and European missionaries. Most of this preservational work is elusive and under-explored – so that the present book constitutes a major pioneering summary of Ugandan oral culture for children. The book addresses key questions such as: What happens when we collect, transcribe, and translate an oral text? How do we transfer components of the oral text to the page? What are the challenges of translating oral forms targeting specifi¬cally a child Audience, and what choices ought to be made in the process? The book provides possible ways of rethink¬ing the debate about orality and literacy as modes of representation – the generic interrelationship between the oral and the written text, and how the two can enter dialogue through transcription and translation. The latter are effective means to archive these oral forms for children and use them to promote literacy and numeracy skills in predominantly oral communities. In the current institutions of formal education in Uganda, this coexistence of orality and literacy is evident in the class¬room environment, where the oral text is turned into words on the page to encourage literacy. Through transcription, the collector is able to capture oral texts in other forms – audio, written, visual, and digital. With the new technologies available, the task is not as arduous as in the past, and the information thus captured is made available in all its wealth for purposes of instruction or entertainment.
