Book Binocular rivalry a gateway to consciousness

Download or read book Binocular rivalry a gateway to consciousness written by Alexander Maier and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain-mind problems like consciousness have been stimulating the interest of philosophers and scientists since the ancient times. In the last decades, the dramatic development of neuroscience has allowed studying such phenomena at several different levels – from single neurons to behavior. Binocular rivalry, a paradigm dissociating the sensory input from the conscious perception during dichoptic viewing of incongruent images, has been a celebrated example of such a tool. During the last century, empirical research on binocular rivalry contributed the first important insights into the neuronal mechanisms of subjective visual perception. Recent advances in brain imaging and electrophysiological recording/stimulating techniques as well as novel theoretical concepts and analytical methods could be exploited to expand our knowledge on this fascinating phenomenon of visual perception and elucidate the neural processes underlying visual consciousness. This Research Topic aims to bring together contributions that could expand the current frontiers of knowledge in binocular rivalry. In particular we would like to focus on reviews, hypothesis & theory or original research articles that specifically combine novel concepts, analytical tools and neurophysiological techniques with binocular rivalry. We expect that these contributions will a) integrate the vast knowledge already existing in the field b) formulate and, when possible, address questions under the light of recent methodological advances in neuroscience and c) provide a benchmark that will stimulate future cutting edge research.

Book Binocular Rivalry

Download or read book Binocular Rivalry written by David Alais and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work on perceptual ambiguity and its implications for the correlation between neural events and perceptual experience. Researchers today in neuroscience and cognitive psychology increasingly turn their attention to binocular rivalry and other forms of perceptual ambiguity or bistability. The study of fluctuations in visual perception in the face of unchanging visual input offers a means for understanding the link between neural events and visual events, including visual awareness. Some neuroscientists believe that binocular rivalry reveals a fundamental aspect of human cognition and provides a way to isolate and study brain areas involved in attention and selection. The eighteen essays collected in Binocular Rivalry present the most recent theoretical and empirical work on this key topic by leading researchers in the field. After the opening chapter's overview of the major characteristics of binocular rivalry in their historical contexts, the contributors consider topics ranging from the basic phenomenon of perceptual ambiguity to brain models and neural networks. The essays illustrate the potential power of the study of perceptual ambiguity as a tool for learning about the neural concomitants of visual awareness, or, as they have been called, the "neural correlates of consciousness."

Rex’s Thrall: During a night out on the prowl, Sydney Walker-Levine meets a sexy, enigmatic weretiger. The pair hit it off instantly and their chemistry is undeniable. Everyone in the shifter nightclub can sense their desire for each other. The werecougar suspects she’s in for a night she’ll never forget. Her plans to get Harlan Rafferty naked are interrupted when she runs into someone she’d hoped she’d never see again. Colton, the arrogant Rex of a werelion pride, tried to claim her once before. Syd had been spared from becoming his captive a few months ago, but her team isn’t there to save her this time. Sydney is lulled into thinking she’s managed to dodge the bullet again, but she didn’t count on the werelions tracking her. Once she leaves the safety of the tiger’s bed, she becomes fair game. Colton is lying in wait, ready to turn her into his thrall. The werecougar only has one ally to watch her back; a zombie mouse called Beta. Spectral Justice: While testing her skills as a pickpocket, Alex learns she has talents no one could have anticipated. The spells that prevent her from reaching her full potential have an unexpected side effect. While the enchantments are a curse, they’re also proving to be surprisingly useful. The fae emissary they’ve been waiting for finally arrives to whisk Alex and Crowmon to the faery realm. They need to find out all they can about the old gods that they suspect are stirring. Their main goal is to find out where they’re being imprisoned, so they can make sure it’s still secure. If the ancient deities escape, all realms will be in peril. Agent Steel sends two of his colleagues to assess Alex’s new abilities. They will aid the team to solve a mission involving several lone female werewolves who have gone missing. The squad will need to be on full alert with so many enemies lurking around, waiting for the opportunity to strike.

Book Price and Nonprice Rivalry in Oligopoly

Download or read book Price and Nonprice Rivalry in Oligopoly written by Robert E. Kuenne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of price and quality decision-making in industries with a few firms which recognize their mutual interdependence is of increasing interest to economists and policy makers. This book introduces a novel theory of that decision-making, based upon the notion of the industry as a community of agents who are involved in both competitive and cooperative relationships. It develops theories and illustrates methodological approaches to the analysis of price and quality decision-making in such instances of a 'rivalrous consonance of interests' among firms.

Book Dynamics of Big Internet Industry Groups and Future Trends

Download or read book Dynamics of Big Internet Industry Groups and Future Trends written by Miguel Gómez-Uranga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies a new analytical framework to the study of the evolution of large Internet companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and Samsung. It sheds light on the dynamics of business groups, which are approached as ‘business ecosystems,’ and introduces the concept of Epigenetic Economic Dynamics (EED), which is defined as the study of the epigenetic dynamics generated as a result of the adaptation of organizations to major changes in their respective environments. The book augments the existing literature on evolutionary economic thinking with findings from epigenetics, which are proving increasingly useful in analyzing the workings of large organizations. It also details the theoretical and conceptual nature of recent work based on evolutionary economics, mainly from the perspective of generalized Darwinism, resilience and related variety, and complements the work conducted on evolutionary economics by applying the analytical framework of EED. It makes it easier to forecast future dynamics on the Internet by proving that a sizable number of big business groups are veering from their initial paths to take unprecedented new directions as a result of competition pressure, and as such is a valuable resource for postgraduates and researchers as well as those involved in economics and innovation studies.
