Book Standing in the Light

Download or read book Standing in the Light written by Severt Young Bear and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An inside view of the Lakota world-of the meaning of Lakota song and dance, of their history, of what it is to be Lakota in America today. . . . A lasting personal tribute to the Lakota way of living."-Whole Earth Review. "A unique, in-depth presentation on Lakota music and the profession of singer, a useful contemporary Oglala representation of the core of their culture, and a version of the involvement of the American Indian Movement on Pine Ridge Reservation, told by a man who was affiliated but not a principal leader. . . . This is a subjective statement, well and persuasively written."-Choice. Severt Young Bear stood in the light-in the center ring at powwows and other gatherings of Lakota people. As founder and, for many years, lead singer of the Porcupine Singers, a traditional singing and drumming group, he also stood, figuratively, in the light of understanding the cherished Lakota heritage. Young Bear's own life in Brotherhood Community, Porcupine District of the Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation, is the linchpin of this narrative, which ranges across the landscape of Dakota culture, from the significance of names to the search for modern Lakota identity, from Lakota oral traditions to powwows and giveaways, from child-rearing practices to humor and leadership. "Music is at the center of Lakota life, " says Young Bear; he describes in rich detail the origins and varieties of Lakota song and dance. Severt Young Bear performed with the Porcupine Singers throughout North America, taught at Oglala Lakota College, and served on the Oglala Sioux tribal council. He was music and dance consultant for the films Dances with Wolves and Thunder Heart. This book is the fruit of his longfriendship and collaboration with R. D. Theisz, a fellow Porcupine Singer and professor of communications and education at Black Hills State University.

Download or read book The Left Behind Fantasy written by William Powell Tuck and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins has sold more than 62 million copies since the first volume appeared in 1995. Jerry Falwell pronounced it the most important series of books in the history of modern Christianity. Many readers have assumed it gives the true facts about the way the world will end and what will happen to all the people in it. But according to real biblical scholarship, this series is seriously flawed. Based on a misreading of many scriptures, including Daniel and the Book of Revelation, it has fed a kind of hysteria in the Christian populace that has led many people to reorder their existence in expectation of an impending doom and the sudden, unexpected return of Jesus. In this book, William Powell Tuck carefully and authoritatively refutes the premises and faulty theology of the Left Behind books, critiquing them in the light of genuine biblical scholarship and common sense.

Book BHAGAVADGITA CHAPTER 8 IMPERISHABLE BRAHMAN

Download or read book BHAGAVADGITA CHAPTER 8 IMPERISHABLE BRAHMAN written by BASANT PRABHAT JOSHI and published by Basant Prabhat Joshi. This book was released on with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this chapter, "How to know imperishable God" Sri Krishna tells how to overcome death. There are two types of paths in this world 1- Lighted path, the path of real knowledge where one becomes realized before leaving the body. 2- Dark path, the path of ignorance, a yogi or a common man attached in karmas goes having auspicious and inauspicious deeds. To know the philosophy of this chapter, please be clear in a few terminologies. 1-In the English language, the word creature, or the organism is used for Jiva. That creates confusion in understanding the word Jiva used in Hindu Vedanta, Bhagavad Gita, and other scriptures. Jiva or Jiva-self is a Brahman with a title, that is, body, mind, intellect, ignorance, etc, have limited power, this Jiva is the ignorant form of the soul. Life forms due to that,s presence, it is a life formula of any creature or organism. The soul is one's true identity and the form of completely pure intelligence. The mind which has forgotten its true nature out of ignorance is called Jiva. 2-In Hindu philosophy, there are two words Brahman and Brahma. There is a big difference between the two. Brahman is the supreme divine and Brahma is the pure living self, Jiva, Sutramatma, or mind. Brahma is the direct cause of the universe, and Brahman is the indirect and eternal cause and cause of Brahma. Brahman is one’s pure self and Brahma is the mind. 3-Brahman, Atma, and Paramatma are different names for omnipresent latent power. That is absolute and pure jnana has manifested in every form of the world, and the cause of each molecule of the world. This universe is the projection of Brahman.
