Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every father has a hidden longing to see his children surpass him. To help him achieve this, Ken Canfield offers a three-part plan. First, a dad should examine his own heart. Next, he should take steps to improve the way he connects with his children. Lastly, he should take a longer range view and plan specifically for a lifetime of involved fathering. Canfield's plan addresses a father's past-a father should resolve his relationship with his own father in order to effectively build a relationship with his children. Canfield also explains how to build the four "walls" or dimensions, of fathering: involvement, awareness, consistency, and nurturing. He then supplies a plan for the future. From being a new father to being a grandfather, dads face challenges at each stage of their life. With the long-range perspective this book provides, fathers can anticipate and prepare for the changing situations they'll face. Based on years of careful research involving thousands of fathers, this book is a solid reference tool for dads.

Book Pradyumna

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher R. Austin
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 0190054115
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book Pradyumna written by Christopher R. Austin and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first full-scale English-language study of Pradyumna, the son of the Hindu god Krsna. Often represented as a young man in mid-adolescence, Pradyumna is both a handsome double of his demon-slaying father and the rebirth of Kamadeva, the God of Love. Sanskrit epic, puranic, and kavya narratives of the 300-1300 CE period celebrate Pradyumna's sexual potency, mastery of illusory subterfuges, and military prowess in supporting the work of his avatara father. These materials reflect the values of an evolving Brahminical and Vaisnava tradition that was deeply invested in the imperatives of family, patrilines, the violent but necessary defense of the social and cosmic order, and the celebration of beauty and desire as a means to the divine. Pradyumna's evolving narratives, almost completely absent from existing studies of Hindu mythology, provide a point of access to the development of Krsna bhakti and Vaisnava theism more broadly. Conversely, Jain sources cast Pradyumna as an exemplary figure through whom a pointed rejection of these values can be articulated, even while sharing certain of their elementary premises. Pradyumna: Lover, Magician, and Scion of the Avatara assembles these narratives, presents key Sanskrit materials in translation and summary form, and articulates the social, gender, and religious values encoded in them. Most importantly, the study argues that Pradyumna's signature two-handed maneuver--the audacious appropriation of a feminine partner, enabled by the emasculating destruction of her demonic male protector--communicates a persistent fantasy of male power expressed in the language of a mutually implicating sex and violence.

Purple Pride banners, tee-shirts, and all imaginable forms of purple paraphernalia stood on display for Clint Andrews's return from service in Vietnam. Even Buster (Clint's Golden Retriever) wore a silly Purple Pride Pooch sweater at Kansas State Football games-chasing a purple Frisbee to entertain the inebriated punched-up crowd. While Clint finishes a degree in nuclear engineering, action and suspense ensue when the FBI coerce the All-American Boy to become a covert operative. His mission: to infiltrate, observe, and report on counter culture groups (Black Panthers, SDS, Weather Underground, and White Panthers) at Kansas State University. An easy gig, Clint thought. What could happen in Manhattan, Kansas? This small college town wasn't exactly a hot bed of social unrest or war protests. So, with the looks and skills men envied, and women loved, Clint quickly finds himself engrossed in the kind of clandestine social activities one can only have in a college setting. He succumbs to many of the wonderful campus opportunities that tempt him. Sports, Girls and good old-fashioned intrigue land him in a quandary as he struggles to confront challenges and is forced to choose between his two greatest passions-baseball and Sara Easler. The Nuclear Kool-Aid Acrid Test is a thrilling romp about a normal, but bright young man who was challenged, motivated, and drawn by extraordinary circumstances-He sometimes withers, but adapts, thrives, and grows to confront these circumstances with a sense of humor, occasional provoked violence, and a unique style of his own. Eric Clayton's first novel, All-American Boy, was published in 2004. All-American Boy is an exciting epic about college football and Vietnam. Eric wrote political essays and satire in the seventies, and worked in the private sector for thirty years

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis Armstrong. "Satchmo." To millions of fans, he was just a great entertainer. But to jazz aficionados, he was one of the most important musicians of our times--not only a key figure in the history of jazz but a formative influence on all of 20th-century popular music. Set against the backdrop of New Orleans, Chicago, and New York during the "jazz age", Collier re-creates the saga of an old-fashioned black man making it in a white world. He chronicles Armstrong's rise as a musician, his scrapes with the law, his relationships with four wives, and his frequent feuds with fellow musicians Earl Hines and Zutty Singleton. He also sheds new light on Armstrong's endless need for approval, his streak of jealousy, and perhaps most important, what some consider his betrayal of his gift as he opted for commercial success and stardom. A unique biography, knowledgeable, insightful, and packed with information, it ends with Armstrong's death in 1971 as one of the best-known figures in American entertainment.
