Book excerpt: Submanifold stabilization is the problem of steering a quantity towards a desired submanifold of the space in which it evolves. This is done by controlling the system producing the quantity in an appropriate fashion. In this thesis, methods for explicitly constructing controllers which solve submanifold stabilization problems are proposed. To this end, three distinct approaches are pursued: For control systems modeled by input-affne differential equations, a construction for turning the submanifold into an asymptotically stable invariant set is presented. For controllers which shall stabilize the submanifold with minimal energy consumption, the structure of such optimal controls is investigated. For control systems modeled by input-output relationships, a framework for bounding the integral deviation of the output from the submanifold is proposed.

The papers are arranged by author, and no attempt has been made to organize them by topic. We would like to thank the members of the Scientific Committee and of the Program Committee, the speakers and authors, and everyone who attended the conference. Approximately 120 researchers and students from all over the world visited Genoa for the meeting, representing a wide spectrum of areas in pure and applied control and systems theory. Book excerpt: In wntmg this monograph my aim has been to present a "geometric" approach to the structural synthesis of multivariable control systems that are linear, time-invariant and of finite dynamic order. The book is ad dressed to graduate students specializing in control, to engineering scientists involved in control systems research and development, and to mathemati cians interested in systems control theory. The label "geometric" in the title is applied for several reasons. First and obviously, the setting is linear state space and the mathematics chiefly linear algebra in abstract (geometric) style. The basic ideas are the familiar system concepts of controllability and observability, thought of as geometric prop erties of distinguished state subspaces. Indeed, the geometry was first brought in out of revulsion against the orgy of matrix manipulation which linear control theory mainly consisted of, around fifteen years ago. But secondly and of greater interest, the geometric setting rather quickly sug gested new methods of attacking synthesis which have proved to be intuitive and economical; they are also easily reduced to matrix arithmetic as soon as you want to compute. The essence of the "geometric" approach is just this: instead of looking directly for a feedback law (say u = Fx) which would solve your synthesis problem if a solution exists, first characterize solvability as a verifiable property of some constructible state subspace, say Y. Then, if all is well, you may calculate F from Y quite easily.

Book excerpt: In its broadest sense, nonlinear synthesis involves in fact the synthesis of sometimes so phisticated or complex control strategies with the aim of prescribing, or at least influencing, the evolution of complex nonlinear systems. Nonlinear synthesis requires the development of methodologies for modeling complex systems, for the analysis of nonlinear models, and for the systematic design of control schemes or feedback laws which can achieve a wide variety of prescribed objectives. The modeling, analysis and control of complex systems in the face of uncertainty form on of the major components of the current research program in the Department of Systems and Decision Sciences (SDS) at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). In June 1989, a IIASA workshop on Nonlinear Synthesis, sponsored by SDS, was held in Sopron, Hungary. We are proud to present this volume as the proceedings of this workshop, a workshop attened by prominent researchers in nonlinear systems from both the East and the West. Since the promotion and encouragement of scientific cooperation between researchers in the East and in the West is one of the goals at IIASA, we feel the Sopron Conference on Nonlinear Synthesis was very successful. Moreover, we were especially pleased by the impressive new advances presented at the workshop which, in this volume, are now part of the conference record.
