Book The New Guinea Campaign of the Southwest Pacific Area

Download or read book The New Guinea Campaign of the Southwest Pacific Area written by Barton L. Johnke and published by . This book was released on 2012* with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "United States military operations in the Pacific during World War II proved to serve as one of the first truly joint combat opportunities in the history of the U.S. military. Specifically, the Allied operations in and around New Guinea demonstrated a unique confluence of geographic and operational factors that required joint operations to effectively execute a military campaign. Although the Air Force did not exist as a separate service at this time, the concept of integrating air, land, and sea forces nevertheless draws similar parallels to today's joint force structure. As such, using current joint doctrine to evaluate this historic campaign can provide a framework to highlight some of the reasons for success as well as validation of the usefulness of the doctrine for future campaigns. To effectively evaluate this campaign through the vehicle of joint doctrine, it must not only encompass the actual effects of operations, but also should include the planned effects of the operations. Using the principles of joint operations as a common thread to link planning through execution and the resultant effects will highlight the continuity of the effectual use of the principles of joint operations in warfare."--Abstract.

Download or read book Fortress Rabaul written by Bruce Gamble and published by Zenith Press. This book was released on 2013-09-09 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of World War II, the mention of Japan's island stronghold sent shudders through thousands of Allied airmen. Some called it “Fortress Rabaul,” an apt name for the headquarters of the Imperial Japanese forces in the Southwest Pacific. Author Bruce Gamble chronicles Rabaul’s crucial role in Japanese operations in the Southwest Pacific. Millions of square feet of housing and storage facilities supported a hundred thousand soldiers and naval personnel. Simpson Harbor and the airfields were the focus of hundreds of missions by American air forces. Winner of the "Gold Medal" (Military Writers Society of America) and "Editor's Choice Award" (Stone & Stone Second World War Books), Fortress Rabaul details a critical and, until now, little understood chapter in the history of World War II.

Book Japanese Operations in the Southwest Pacific Area

Download or read book Japanese Operations in the Southwest Pacific Area written by Douglas MacArthur and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports of General MacArthur are the official after-action reports of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. Long out of print, this facsimile edition contains not only MacArthur's own perspective of his operations against the Japanese in the Southwest Pacific Area during World War II but also the enemy's unique account of Imperial Army campaigns against MacArthur's forces. Collectively, the reports have substantial and enduring value for military historians and students of military affairs, providing an illuminating record of momentous events influenced in large measure by a distinguished Soldier and towering figure in American historiography. This volume parallels the record of Allied operations in the SWPA from the Defense of Luzon, 8 December 1941, to the Surrender Negotiations in Manila, 15 August 1945. It is the Japanese official record, contained in operational monographs furnished by the Japanese Demobilization Bureaux, the successors to the former War and Navy Ministries, developed by Officers of the Japanese Imperial Headquarters, Tokyo, and on the Staffs of major Japanese Commanders in the field. Like Volume I, the material is thus presented by eye witnesses to events, and is supported by official documentary evidence. It is a record of bitter resistance and tenacious fighting by a first-class Army and Navy, led by Diplomats and Military Politicians through the holocaust of national destruction, an Army that was steeped in medieval cruelty, but fought with the most modern technical skill and savage valor, until superior skill and equal valor broke the spell of the Samurai and the legend of an invincible Empire.

Download or read book Victory in Papua written by Samuel Milner and published by . This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strategic significance of the Papuan Campaign can be briefly stated. In addition to blunting the Japanese thrust toward Australia and the transpacific line of communications, it put General MacArthur's forces in a favorable position to take the offensive. But this little known campaign is significant for still another reason. It was the battle test of a large hitherto-inexperienced U.S. Army force and its commanders under the conditions which were to attend much of the ground fighting in the Pacific. Costly in casualties and suffering, it taught lessons that the Army had to learn if it was to cope with the Japanese under conditions of tropical warfare. Samuel Milner holds a graduate degree in history from the University of Alberta and has done further graduate work in political science at the University of Minnesota. During World War II, he served in Australia and New Guinea as a historian with the Air Transport Command, Army Air Forces. Upon completing Victory in Papua he left the Office of the Chief of Military History to become historian of the Air Weather Service, U.S. Air Force.
