Will the wealthy Mr. Graham be the real life version of the fantasy man she dreamed of, or will his sadistic side break her and shatter her hopes? Perhaps it will be the other applicants, also living in Mr. Graham's castle, that will ultimately determine Alicia's fate. Then again, they may offer her the insights she needs to persevere. Book excerpt: All six of Madison Barry's "The House" books in one volume! At The House, submissive women are recruited to become temporary sex slaves to the masters there, all of whom are carefully selected for their discretion, character, wealth, and dominance. The House has many customs and rules, one of the most important of which is that masters are not permitted to enter into romantic relationships, either with their own slave or another woman, because of the danger exposure could pose to the members there. But when one of the masters falls in love with Lucy, a new slave at the House, his obsession with her sets off a chain of events that threatens the very existence of The House and the reputations of its members.Book One: Pet Lucy - Lucy seems to always fail at having good sex. When she goes to a sex therapist for help, she is encouraged to apply to "The House," where a mysterious group of men train her to be their slave. She learns there is freedom in total submission, but she must let go of her pride, her shame, and her fears. Who will she become when she is released from Lucy's baggage and is remade into simply Pet?Book Two: Master Michael - Michael has fantasies of dominating a woman, calling himself a Dom without a sub. He joins the House, where he learns to train and discipline the women who come to them to become slaves. But when he falls in love with Lucy when he was only supposed to be training her, which is strictly against House rules, he must decide between his loyalty to the House and his love for Lucy.Book Three: Slave Tara - Tara and her master are deeply in love, but he is unwilling to give up his work at The House to be with her. Their infrequent sessions are intense and satisfying, but Tara needs more from him, and he consistently puts The House before her. She becomes involved with another master, who insists she is more important than The House, but when a crisis strikes at The House, will he choose her or them?Book Four: Master James - James has finally been granted a slave of his own, and he is thrilled with his lovely and playful Pet. But when James meets and becomes infatuated with a vanilla woman, he knows he must keep his Pet secret or cause problems at The House. What will happen when the girlfriend and the Pet finally cross paths? How will James sort out the mess that is sure to arise when his love triangle falls apart?Book Five: Pet Alicia - Alicia's sex life is dismal, and when she learns about BDSM, she realizes she is a born submissive. She becomes a slave at the House, desperately in love with her Master James. But James screws up, and Alicia is devastated to be removed from his care, a victim of growing conflicts among the House members. Will the House survive the internal threat? What will happen to Alicia when the dust settles?Book Six: Sir Leo - Years ago, Leo started a club for BDSM masters to train willing slaves. The House became Leo's life, but despite their rule against romantic involvements, even Leo has twice stayed with a former slave. Other masters, too, want a chance at love, and Leo knows the House must change or die out. Will the members accept his new vision, or will the change tear the community apart for good?

Book The Purpose of Power

Download or read book The Purpose of Power written by Alicia Garza and published by One World. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential guide to building transformative movements to address the challenges of our time, from one of the country’s leading organizers and a co-creator of Black Lives Matter “Excellent and provocative . . . a gateway [to] urgent debates.”—Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, The New Yorker NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY Time • Marie Claire • Kirkus Reviews In 2013, Alicia Garza wrote what she called “a love letter to Black people” on Facebook, in the aftermath of the acquittal of the man who murdered seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin. Garza wrote: Black people. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter. With the speed and networking capacities of social media, #BlackLivesMatter became the hashtag heard ’round the world. But Garza knew even then that hashtags don’t start movements—people do. Long before #BlackLivesMatter became a rallying cry for this generation, Garza had spent the better part of two decades learning and unlearning some hard lessons about organizing. The lessons she offers are different from the “rules for radicals” that animated earlier generations of activists, and diverge from the charismatic, patriarchal model of the American civil rights movement. She reflects instead on how making room amongst the woke for those who are still awakening can inspire and activate more people to fight for the world we all deserve. This is the story of one woman’s lessons through years of bringing people together to create change. Most of all, it is a new paradigm for change for a new generation of changemakers, from the mind and heart behind one of the most important movements of our time.

Book Who Do You Serve Who Do You Protect

Download or read book Who Do You Serve Who Do You Protect written by Maya Schenwar and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays and reports examining the reality of police violence against Black and brown communities in America. What is the reality of policing in the United States? Do the police keep anyone safe and secure other than the very wealthy? How do recent police killings of young Black people in the United States fit into the historical and global context of anti-blackness? This collection of reports and essays (the first collaboration between Truthout and Haymarket Books) explores police violence against Black, brown, indigenous, and other marginalized communities, miscarriages of justice, and failures of token accountability and reform measures. It also makes a compelling and provocative argument against calling the police. Contributions cover a broad range of issues including the killing by police of Black men and women, police violence against Latino and indigenous communities, law enforcement’s treatment of pregnant people and those with mental illness, and the impact of racist police violence on parenting. There are also specific stories such as a Detroit police conspiracy to slap murder convictions on young Black men using police informant, and the failure of Chicago’s much-touted Independent Police Review Authority, the body supposedly responsible for investigating police misconduct. The title Who Do You Serve, Who Do You Protect? is no mere provocation: the book also explores alternatives for keeping communities safe. Contributors include William C. Anderson, Candice Bernd, Aaron Cantú, Thandi Chimurenga, Ejeris Dixon, Adam Hudson, Victoria Law, Mike Ludwig, Sarah Macaraeg, and Roberto Rodriguez. Praise for Who Do You Serve, Who Do You Protect? “With heartbreaking, glass-sharp prose, the book catalogs the abuse and destruction of Black, native, and trans bodies. And then, most importantly, it offers real-world solutions.” —Chicago Review of Books “A must-read for anyone seeking to understand American culture in the present day.” —Xica Nation “This brilliant collection of essays, written by activists, journalists, community organizers and survivors of state violence, urgently confronts the criminalization, police violence and anti-Black racism that is plaguing urban communities. It is one of the most important books to emerge about these critical issues: passionately written with a keen eye towards building a world free of the cruelty and violence of the carceral state.” —Beth Richie, author of Arrested Justice: Black Women, Violence, and America’s Prison Nation

Book Dynamics in Action

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alicia Juarrero
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2002-01-25
  • ISBN : 9780262600477
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Dynamics in Action written by Alicia Juarrero and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2002-01-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the difference between a wink and a blink? The answer is important not only to philosophers of mind, for significant moral and legal consequences rest on the distinction between voluntary and involuntary behavior. However, "action theory"—the branch of philosophy that has traditionally articulated the boundaries between action and non-action, and between voluntary and involuntary behavior—has been unable to account for the difference. Alicia Juarrero argues that a mistaken, 350-year-old model of cause and explanation—one that takes all causes to be of the push-pull, efficient cause sort, and all explanation to be prooflike—underlies contemporary theories of action. Juarrero then proposes a new framework for conceptualizing causes based on complex adaptive systems. Thinking of causes as dynamical constraints makes bottom-up and top-down causal relations, including those involving intentional causes, suddenly tractable. A different logic for explaining actions—as historical narrative, not inference—follows if one adopts this novel approach to long-standing questions of action and responsibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Book Sea of Poppies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amitav Ghosh
  • Publisher : Farrar, Straus and Giroux
  • Release : 2009-09-29
  • ISBN : 1429930810
  • Pages : 565 pages

Download or read book Sea of Poppies written by Amitav Ghosh and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2009-09-29 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in an epic trilogy, Amitav Ghosh's Sea of Poppies is "a remarkably rich saga . . . which has plenty of action and adventure à la Dumas, but moments also of Tolstoyan penetration--and a drop or two of Dickensian sentiment" (The Observer [London]). At the heart of this vibrant saga is a vast ship, the Ibis. Her destiny is a tumultuous voyage across the Indian Ocean shortly before the outbreak of the Opium Wars in China. In a time of colonial upheaval, fate has thrown together a diverse cast of Indians and Westerners on board, from a bankrupt raja to a widowed tribeswoman, from a mulatto American freedman to a free-spirited French orphan. As their old family ties are washed away, they, like their historical counterparts, come to view themselves as jahaj-bhais, or ship-brothers. The vast sweep of this historical adventure spans the lush poppy fields of the Ganges, the rolling high seas, and the exotic backstreets of Canton. With a panorama of characters whose diaspora encapsulates the vexed colonial history of the East itself, Sea of Poppies is "a storm-tossed adventure worthy of Sir Walter Scott" (Vogue).
