Book Parallel Computers 2

Download or read book Parallel Computers 2 written by R.W Hockney and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition, parallel computing technology has gained considerable momentum. A large proportion of this has come from the improvement in VLSI techniques, offering one to two orders of magnitude more devices than previously possible. A second contributing factor in the fast development of the subject is commercialization. The supercomputer is no longer restricted to a few well-established research institutions and large companies. A new computer breed combining the architectural advantages of the supercomputer with the advance of VLSI technology is now available at very attractive prices. A pioneering device in this development is the transputer, a VLSI processor specifically designed to operate in large concurrent systems. Parallel Computers 2: Architecture, Programming and Algorithms reflects the shift in emphasis of parallel computing and tracks the development of supercomputers in the years since the first edition was published. It looks at large-scale parallelism as found in transputer ensembles. This extensively rewritten second edition includes major new sections on the transputer and the OCCAM language. The book contains specific information on the various types of machines available, details of computer architecture and technologies, and descriptions of programming languages and algorithms. Aimed at an advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level, this handbook is also useful for research workers, machine designers, and programmers concerned with parallel computers. In addition, it will serve as a guide for potential parallel computer users, especially in disciplines where large amounts of computer time are regularly used.

Book Algorithms and Parallel VLSI Architectures II

Download or read book Algorithms and Parallel VLSI Architectures II written by Patrice Quinton and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the emergence of VLSI, the relationship between the development of parallel algorithms and the design of special-purpose architecture has always been of major concern. The analysis of this relationship is the main topic of this book. Hardware and software issues closely depend upon one another and cannot be solved independently. Beyond the natural complexity of algorithm design, the designer has to face that of choosing the appropriate technology medium for its efficient realization. The dramatic developments in VLSI technology now offers extraordinary opportunities for implementing complex applications. As application specific/systems can offer 100 to 1000-fold improvements in cost/performance over general purpose computers on applications, they are attracting increasing attention in both academic and industrial communities. Highly specialized application-specific arrays of processors, which are the targeted architectures in this book, are extremely appealing. The papers in this volume give a thorough overview on current research in the areas of parallel algorithms, synthesis methods, VLSI architectures, and design tools.

Book Algorithms Complexity Analysis and VLSI Architectures for MPEG 4 Motion Estimation

Download or read book Algorithms Complexity Analysis and VLSI Architectures for MPEG 4 Motion Estimation written by Peter M. Kuhn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MPEG-4 is the multimedia standard for combining interactivity, natural and synthetic digital video, audio and computer-graphics. Typical applications are: internet, video conferencing, mobile videophones, multimedia cooperative work, teleteaching and games. With MPEG-4 the next step from block-based video (ISO/IEC MPEG-1, MPEG-2, CCITT H.261, ITU-T H.263) to arbitrarily-shaped visual objects is taken. This significant step demands a new methodology for system analysis and design to meet the considerably higher flexibility of MPEG-4. Motion estimation is a central part of MPEG-1/2/4 and H.261/H.263 video compression standards and has attracted much attention in research and industry, for the following reasons: it is computationally the most demanding algorithm of a video encoder (about 60-80% of the total computation time), it has a high impact on the visual quality of a video encoder, and it is not standardized, thus being open to competition. Algorithms, Complexity Analysis, and VLSI Architectures for MPEG-4 Motion Estimation covers in detail every single step in the design of a MPEG-1/2/4 or H.261/H.263 compliant video encoder: Fast motion estimation algorithms Complexity analysis tools Detailed complexity analysis of a software implementation of MPEG-4 video Complexity and visual quality analysis of fast motion estimation algorithms within MPEG-4 Design space on motion estimation VLSI architectures Detailed VLSI design examples of (1) a high throughput and (2) a low-power MPEG-4 motion estimator. Algorithms, Complexity Analysis and VLSI Architectures for MPEG-4 Motion Estimation is an important introduction to numerous algorithmic, architectural and system design aspects of the multimedia standard MPEG-4. As such, all researchers, students and practitioners working in image processing, video coding or system and VLSI design will find this book of interest.

Book Data Access and Storage Management for Embedded Programmable Processors

Download or read book Data Access and Storage Management for Embedded Programmable Processors written by Francky Catthoor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data Access and Storage Management for Embedded Programmable Processors gives an overview of the state-of-the-art in system-level data access and storage management for embedded programmable processors. The targeted application domain covers complex embedded real-time multi-media and communication applications. Many of these applications are data-dominated in the sense that their cost related aspects, namely power consumption and footprint are heavily influenced (if not dominated) by the data access and storage aspects. The material is mainly based on research at IMEC in this area in the period 1996-2001. In order to deal with the stringent timing requirements and the data dominated characteristics of this domain, we have adopted a target architecture style that is compatible with modern embedded processors, and we have developed a systematic step-wise methodology to make the exploration and optimization of such applications feasible in a source-to-source precompilation approach.

Book Custom Memory Management Methodology

Download or read book Custom Memory Management Methodology written by Francky Catthoor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main intention of this book is to give an impression of the state-of-the-art in system-level memory management (data transfer and storage) related issues for complex data-dominated real-time signal and data processing applications. The material is based on research at IMEC in this area in the period 1989- 1997. In order to deal with the stringent timing requirements and the data dominated characteristics of this domain, we have adopted a target architecture style and a systematic methodology to make the exploration and optimization of such systems feasible. Our approach is also very heavily application driven which is illustrated by several realistic demonstrators, partly used as red-thread examples in the book. Moreover, the book addresses only the steps above the traditional high-level synthesis (scheduling and allocation) or compilation (traditional or ILP oriented) tasks. The latter are mainly focussed on scalar or scalar stream operations and data where the internal structure of the complex data types is not exploited, in contrast to the approaches discussed here. The proposed methodologies are largely independent of the level of programmability in the data-path and controller so they are valuable for the realisation of both hardware and software systems. Our target domain consists of signal and data processing systems which deal with large amounts of data.

Book Algorithmic Aspects of VLSI Layout

Download or read book Algorithmic Aspects of VLSI Layout written by Majid Sarrafzadeh and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, research in VLSI physical design has been directed toward automation of layout process. Since the cost of fabricating a circuit is a fast growing function of the circuit area, circuit layout techniques are developed with an aim to produce layouts with small areas. Other criteria of optimality such as delay and via minimization need to be taken into consideration. This book includes 14 articles that deal with various stages of the VLSI layout problem. It covers topics including partitioning, floorplanning, placement, global routing, detailed routing and layout verification. Some of the chapters are review articles, giving the state-of-the-art of the problems related to timing driven placement, global and detailed routing, and circuit partitioning. The rest of the book contains research articles, giving recent findings of new approaches to the above-mentioned problems. They are all written by leading experts in the field. This book will serve as good references for both researchers and professionals who work in this field.

Book Algorithms and Parallel Computing

Download or read book Algorithms and Parallel Computing written by Fayez Gebali and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a software gap between the hardware potential and the performance that can be attained using today's software parallel program development tools. The tools need manual intervention by the programmer to parallelize the code. Programming a parallel computer requires closely studying the target algorithm or application, more so than in the traditional sequential programming we have all learned. The programmer must be aware of the communication and data dependencies of the algorithm or application. This book provides the techniques to explore the possible ways to program a parallel computer for a given application.
